4 July 15, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 This Week in our Parish Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend we will be showing an eight minute video from the Archdiocese regarding the One Faith, One Family, One Future in Christ Capital Campaign at all of our parish Masses. It is a well-done summary of what the Archdiocese hopes to achieve from the current campaign. I hope the visuals and testimonies will flesh out some of the information that I presented at our Masses on June 30 and July 1. I was happy that we had around 50 parishioners come to the Open Forum last Monday evening, July 9, at St. Joseph Church. This gave me around 30 minutes to present more information regarding our St. Joseph Church Stained Glass Window Project as part of the Combined Archdiocesan Capital Campaign. This was followed by about 45 minutes of questions and answers and various comments and perspectives concerning the entire campaign. I appreciate the interest of all those who came! As you come to Mass this weekend, be aware that we are in the midst of 40 hours of Eucharistic Adoration at St. Joseph Church. Adoration will continue on this Sunday, July 15, from 9:30 AM until 5:30 PM, and the same time frame on Monday, July 16. If you have not yet had a chance to take advantage of some prayer time in Eucharistic Adoration, please do so! You don t have to commit to any specific time frame as we have volunteers covering all the hours. Just come for a few minutes and pray for your own intentions, and please also pray for the success of our project to preserve our beautiful stained glass windows! Monday, July 16, is the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patronal feast of the Carmelite Order. There will be no 8:30 AM morning Mass on Monday at Immaculate Conception because of the special feast day Mass at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 PM. Our evening celebration will begin with the option of joining our Third Order Lay Carmelites for Evening Prayer at 6:20 PM. If there is anyone wishing to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, you will have the opportunity to do so after Mass. We will conclude our celebration with an Ice Cream Social in Kinzler Hall. As you enter St. Joseph Church on Monday evening, pay close attention to the stained glass window of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Simon Stock on the north wall of the church. Around 6:50 PM, sunlight will come streaming through Our Lady s halo from the northwest, a phenomena that happens only during this time of the year. This will be the first window to be restored in our renovation project. This window will be removed in early August and we hope to have it back in place by mid- October. We hope this will be a motivating factor for those considering a gift to our campaign! Finally, because I have been called to Jury Duty, our Thursday, July 19, Mass has been moved to 7:30 AM. God bless you always! Fr. David SATURDAY, JULY 14 4:00 pm Vigil Mass (SJ) 5:30 pm Vigil Mass (IC) Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time SUNDAY, JULY 15 8:00 am Sunday Mass (SJ) 9:30 am-5:30 pm Eucharistic Adoration (SJ) 10:30 am Sunday Mass (IC) MONDAY, JULY 16 No morning Mass at Immaculate Conception 9:30 am-5:30 pm Eucharistic Adoration (SJ) 7:00 pm Mass to honor the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mt. 5 July 15, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 St. Joseph Church Stained Glass Window Restoration Project St. Joseph Church has a total of 13 stained glass windows. Five of these date to the original opening of the church in June These include the two small windows over the sanctuary and the three windows facing Broadway in the choir loft. The three choir loft windows were all given in memory of the Hund Family, of which there are many descendants still active in our parish today. The eight stained glass windows in the nave of the church were installed in In 1978, some 40 years ago, protective plexiglass coverings were placed over the outside of the 13 windows. At the time, it was thought that these coverings would protect the windows from hail, accidents, and vandalism, and also help to insulate the church. Unfortunately, in fact, the plexiglass has speeded the deterioration of the windows because of the intense heat which is trapped between the coverings and the windows. We hope to contract with Don Bearden of Creative Stained Glass of Lenexa, KS and the Hoeffer Stained Glass Studio of Hutchinson, KS to restore our windows. This is the company used by the Sisters of Charity in the restoration of the windows at their Annunciation Chapel at the SCL Mother House, as well as the company that restored the Tiffany stained glass windows at the First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth. The project will involve restoring one window at a time. The exterior plexiglass coverings will be removed and replaced with special glass ventilated coverings. Exterior window frames will be scraped, sanded, painted, and checked for rot. The windows themselves will be removed, disassembled, and sent to the Hoefer Studio in Hutchinson, KS. All EPA regulations will be followed for the removal of the windows with lead dividers. All discolored glass will be replaced with antique stained glass from Germany. All pieces will be restored to their original painted condition. The bottom ventilators and all cracked pieces will be completely repaired. The newly refurbished windows will then be re-installed. The total cost for this project is approximately $570,000. We currently have around $100,000 in St. Joseph maintenance funds which can be directed toward this project. We need to raise an additional $468,000 in the Capital Campaign.
