Reflecting Our Existence. C E N T R A L U N I V E R S I T Y O F R A J A S T H A N F E B R U A R Y, I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Chief Editor s Message Chief Editor s Message University News ( English & Chemistry) University News ( Economics) University News ( Bani Thani & M.B.A.) Chit chat with Neil Asher Student Writeups ( Priyanka Gupta & Prem Kumar) Student Writeups ( Raghubir Singh & Khushbu Kumpawat) Student Writeups (Poonam Rathore) Student Writeups (Film Review) Student Writeups( Arun Sukla) Student Writeups ( Geromic George ) Contribute or work for Astitva I keep six honest serving-men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When And How and Where and Who -Rudyard Kipling These five Ws and one H will tell you about Astitva. What? You are reading the first issue of the student run, university e- newsletter, Astitva. As the name suggests it is an effort in building awareness and knowledge of our existence. When I mention our here, it really means the community of the university. This includes everybody from the Vice Chancellor to the faculty to the students. Astitva is also bilingual, it would have both Hindi and English articles and would comprise mainly of student write -ups (at least for the foreseeable future). Why? Every community needs a medium to express its voice, to inform itself, to come to know itself, in other words it needs to see its own reflection. Astitva aims to do all of that and in doing so it defines our existence in some measure. It would give a platform for students to express themselves and hopefully establish a culture of healthy debate in this university. When? The last semester just went by in planning. Our university being new and we being the first batch of students, we had to start things from scratch. Finally, in January things fell into place. How? The Editorial Board of Astitva is modeled to a certain extent on Harvard Crimson s( Harvard University s newspaper) editorial board. All members of the Editorial Board would be known as Editors, irrespective of the role assigned or assumed and this was done to get rid of hierarchy. At this point in time, the major roles that have been chalked out are Creative Editor, Literary Editor, Reporter and that of the Chief Editor. All roles will be flexible in nature to do away with rigidity. The Chief Editor would be primus inter pares or first among equals. Where? Here, in this university. Who? Students from different departments are involved in bringing this to you. Editorial Board of Astitva (in alphabetical order): Abhijit Gajapure (M.B.A.),Arun Shukla (MSc.Tech Mathematics- IV), Geromic George (M.A. Economics), Khushbu Kumpawat (M.A. English), Poonam Rathore (M.A. Economics), Pramathesh Nandan (M.A. English), Prem Kumar (M.B.A.), Priyanka Gupta (MSc.Tech Mathematics- IV), Raghubir Singh (M.B.A.) and Ritesh Dudi (M.B.A.) Contributors: Kirandeep Kaur (M.A. Economics) & Arvind Yadav ( Msc.Chemistry) We are looking for more members, particularly reporters, to cover various events in the university. And contributions are always welcome. Our id uniews.curaj@gmail.com Geromic George M.A. Economics

UNIVERSITY NEWS P A G E 2 Workshop on Cartographies of Indian Languages The English Dept. of CURAJ organized a Workshop on Cartographies of Indian Languages from the 24 th to the 26 th of January along with BHASA,an organization that works on preserving the indigenous culture, heritage and livelihood. Dr.Ganesh Devy,an eminent writer and critic, who has been dedicated in this field for a long time now is its chairman and founder member. A team of 32 delegates which comprised of Padma Shree awardees like Dr. Namgyal and renowned linguist, Dr. Pattanayak, deliberated and discussed among themselves on devising an action plan on preparing a 20 volume catalogue which would list each and every language spoken in every region of India. According to Dr. Pattanayak, the survey hopes to record commonalities or similarities that connect and bind people and communities together, not divide them in their pluralities as popular perceptions show. A survey of its own kind, it will adopt a bottom-to-top approach, examining the ground realities and then only going to the editorial collective. The collective would comprise 200 researchers and specialists who would be assigned various regions and each of them would have further researchers under them who would do the field job, going into every part of all the states. It was decided at the end of the Workshop that a Center for Cultural Studies would be set up from the next academic session. All in all, it was a very good experience, interacting with intellectuals and learning from them. 6 UNIVERSITY NEWS P A G E 6 Chit Chat with Neil Asher The blue eyed boy of the university, Neil Asher, a Xavierite, whose favourite colour is incidentally blue, in conversation with Geromic George on his international placement, his interview and his time in CURAJ. Geromic George (GG): To begin with, I would like to ask how did you get to know about Swiss Re, was it through a job portal or through some contact? Neil Asher ( NL): I got to know through a friend studying in IIT Powai. Swiss Re was basically recruiting around 20 graduates from all over the world and a few were to be recruited from the Asia Pacific region. I applied for it through their website. GG: Can you explain about the various rounds of interview you had to go through? NL: Firstly, I had to go through various online psychometric tests. Then I had to go through various rounds of interview including a telephonic interview. There was a round at Delhi. Finally, I was called for a 3 day assessment at their Honk Kong office. GG: What all did you had to go through during those three days? NL: Hong Kong was great! No issues regarding accommodation etc. There were various tests. They basically tested my data interpretation skills, quantitative aptitude and verbal reading abilities. There was a group discussion where each person in the group assumed the role of a sales representative and had to argue how best their department would utlilise 50,000 pounds. The aim was also to build a consensus. Also, I had to give a presentation on a CSR project and I found this the most easiest. They even went as far as scrutinizing our rough work written on sheets of paper. GG: Which test did you find as the toughest? NL: There was a fact finding test, where I had to frame questions and obtain information regarding setting up a call center in Eastern Europe or India. I just got 5 correct out of 40 important things that I should have asked them. At that point in time, I thought I was a goner. We also had a role play test where we had to convince a client not to leave the company. They almost roughed you up and you basically had to talk your way out of it. Some of the interviewees from mainland China were crying after that test. GG: Ok, how many interviewees were there in all? NL: There were 4 from India, 6 from Hong Kong, around 4 or 5 from mainland China, 1 or 2 from Singapore and 2 from Malaysia. They were applying for different roles and positions, some for law and finance, while others like me were applying for actuaries. The Indians had gotten directly through campus interviews, 2 were from IITs and one was from ISI. GG: How did the university contribute to your success? NL: The greatest way in which the university helped me was to build my self belief, the belief that I could compete against students from elite institutions like the IITs. GG: Any particular advice that you would want to give to students? NL: Yeah, build your soft skills, your communication skills. It is, of course, important to be technically sound and have a good command over your subject but to stand out from others you need to talk your self out of various situations during interviews. GG: What did you like the most about our CURAJ? NL: It has got the right attitude to make it to the big league. It will get there because it makes the most out of what ever it has and in the process give its best.

STUDENTS CANVAS P A G E 8 The Chinese Bamboo Tree You take a little seed, plant it, water it, and fertilise it for a whole year, and nothing happens. The second year you water it and fertilise it, and nothing happens. The third year you water it and fertilise it, and nothing happens. How discouraging this becomes! The fourth year you water it and fertilise it, and nothing happens. This is very frustrating. The fifth year you continue to water and fertilise the seed and then...take note. Sometime during the fifth year, the Chinese bamboo tree spouts and grows NINETY FEET IN SIX WEEKS. Life is much akin to the growing process of the Chinese bamboo tree. It is often discouraging. We seemingly do things right, and nothing happens. But for those who do things right and are not discouraged and are persistent, things will happen. Finally, we begin to receive the rewards. Raghubir Singh M.B.A. But for those who do things right and are not discouraged and are persistent, things will happen. Finally, we begin to receive the rewards. One is Loved because One is Loved Swami Vivekananda: All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction. Love is therefore the only law of life. He who loves lives he who is selfish dying. Therefore love for lives sake because it is law of life, just as you breathe to live. May, we all have the courage to love and accept the love without searching for reasons. May, we all love each other as the Mother Nature loves us, nurtures us. Love is very fragile and the beauty is that even though it s fragile it makes us strong. It needs an open mind, open heart and free soul to see the beauty of life. One should love without owing it because love sets free, and animals and birds can see it better than us. We, humans, the so called most rational of all animals believe in possession while the birds and animals who don t have intellectual faculties set their love free and let it fly. Love is an omnipresent energy which runs the world without even making its presence visible; it is like the eternal soul, the over soul, god, Allah, whatever and however we call it. It is the rhythm of the nature. We cannot see it, yet we can feel it if we try to expand our vision. Its rhythm is like breaths which are continuous yet we don t notice the breath because it comes so naturally. Love is incomprehensible and abstract yet it s manifested in everything around us. It is the blessing of the soul which is showered on every being and on everything. Hope we illuminate our souls to see its manifestation soothe our passions to see its purity, divinity and eternity without the yearning for hoard- ing it. Those who feel this omnipresent everlasting spiritual beauty of love are the blessed souls. May, we all be blessed. Khushbu Kumpawat M.A. English

STUDENTS CANVAS P A G E 9 Freedom and Discipline Go Together Enhancing the quality of life is the ultimate objective and driving force behind every human deed which is governed by his or her ethic and need. To build a positive aura and inspirational personality we try to inculcate good quality attributes since our childhood and keep on adding more. Discipline and freedom of the mind and soul are two such important attributes. This is a rare quality which one has to inculcate, nurture and cherish from early childhood. Many may argue against the terms taken together but I believe in the famous saying of Harry Emerson Fosdick, a prominent liberal Baptist minister of the early 20th Century: No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No stream or gas drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined. We start understanding the meaning of discipline as to act in accordance with established rules from our early childhood. The blurred meaning of freedom as an exemption from necessity, in choice and action came to our understanding at a mature stage. But the crystal clear implication of freedom and discipline can be understood only by a very mature mind. This is to be bought with a high price, not merely claimed. Freedom and discipline go hand in hand. If we set out to seek freedom, then we have to learn above all the things to govern our soul and your senses. Only through discipline may a man learn to be free. Freedom and discipline have come to be regarded as mutually exclusive, when in fact freedom is not at all the opposite, but the final reward, of discipline. If discipline overshadows freedom, it becomes a kind of restriction. Man follows the footprints of his great predecessors in a rigid way without any second thought and doesn t allow his mind to deviate. And overshadow of freedom leads to futile activities. An advice becomes interference for an undisciplined free soul. A free mind soars beyond the universe but discipline provides feasibility to his thoughts and actions. The balance between the two is subjective. So, an individual sets his own weightage to freedom and discipline in his character guided by his holistic approach of development. Our constitution also provide us the Right to Freedom, under Article 19 which says that, all citizens shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression, to assemble peaceably and without arms, to form association or unions, to move freely throughout the territory of India, to reside and settle in any part of the territory of and, to practice any profession, or to carry on any occupation, trade or business. At the same-time vide part (2) of the same Article 19, the Constitution allows the Operation of any existing law, permits the States to make any law to impose restrictions on the above rights, that can be considered as reasonable. This restriction is actually the discipline in order to avoid misuse of the freedom. Discipline does not kill freedom. It actually creates freedom. By learning to be disciplined and be free simultaneously, we do not step into other people s liberty and learn how to nicely fit into the society in our own way. Otherwise we will live life in a free style way. Free style way is always more destructive than constructive, and it always hurts others. Through discipline we recognize the acceptable limits of freedom. Freedom is wonderful, but what s even more wonderful is discipline. There is no real freedom without discipline, and there is no real discipline unless it creates freedom so it s not the kind of discipline where one is put in a prison and he can t do anything except follow certain rules, eat, go to bed and get up. The other part of discipline is yes, you eat and go to bed and you don t do this and so forth, but within those ground rules, there s an amazing amount of freedom to be, the freedom to create, to study, to learn, to play, to have relationships, to be intelligent, the freedom to receive and give love, all those freedoms arise out of the ground rules we adhere to because the ground rules only purpose is to make a human being fulfilled or the opposite, fill-fueled. Filled up to the fullest we can be, with education, knowledge, attention, awareness, sensitivity, compassion, understanding and wisdom. The kind of freedom that we get from discipline enables us to be selfpowered, self-esteemed, selfmotivated and satisfied with our own abilities to create a life that will make us healthy, wealthy, happy and wise. Poonam Rathore M.A. Economics Discipline does not kill freedom. It actually creates freedom.

STUDENTS CANVAS P A G E 10 Film Review: Dhobi Ghat (This review is a mash-up of various reviews and borrows from them all.) Kiran Rao's "Dhobi Ghat" (Mumbai Diaries) is easily one of the most dynamic cinematic portraits of that decaying, vibrant, impossible city. It is a fully realized art film with European sensibilities that intertwines the stories of four characters from different worlds but the same lonely, overcrowded city. Either the film will sink into your skin like a slow ache or it will be bewildering and downright boring. Talking about the film, Kiran brings in the poetry of Mumbai, the trauma, the turbulence, the aloof yet friendly, harsh still beautiful Mumbai as the fifth protagonist of the film that talks about the lives of four people Munna (Prateik), Shai (Monica), Yasmin (Kirti) and Arun (Aamir). But as the audience one needs the patience to let the film grow into you. There is no overt plot four lives randomly connect in Mumbai. There are fleeting moments of happiness and pain, and the eventual realization that the journey never ends. The struggle to survive and to connect is eternal. Mumbai is both a silent spectator and as well as a confidant here which observes each of those four characters mutely. Director brilliantly manages to find a physical representation of Mumbai city, in the old woman who blankly stares at all the characters, but says nothing. The metaphor is simple but powerful Mumbai is a dying, decaying city, but one that is definitely alive and watches over all. Through Arun's paintings, Shai's black & white photos and Yasmin's video diary, the movie draws you into the mystery and melancholy that is Mumbai. Each of its characters is vividly sketched yet they are only sketches: You don't fully grasp any of them. Their lives and personalities remain partially hidden. And like the character of Arun who becomes a voyeur into the life of Yasmin, it is Kiran Rao that has played voyeur on the city of Mumbai. Each one of the characters in the film is like Mumbai, and Mumbai is like each one of us who inhabit it. Cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray uses multiple formats to penetrate, however briefly, Mumbai's shadows. The gaze is hopeful but realistic the city is always changing even as some things never change. Oscar-winning Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla's guitar-heavy score is non-indian yet a perfect fit and haunting for catching the sadhappy mood of this tumultuous city. What doesn t work as well is the pacing. Rao s build-up of characters is painfully slow with the first 30 minutes or so being the most problematic. Some of the early scenes are clumsy and the disjointed narrative just isn t engaging enough. Intriguingly, Aamir Khan, otherwise such a fine actor, strikes a false note. With constantly furrowed brows, he seems to be performing at a different pitch from everyone else. The movie-goers are impressed by the unusual treatment given to the characters as the fragments of the characters experience-seen through a raw video diary, black and white photographic images and painting form a portrait of Mumbai and its people bound together as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love, have pulled their senses off. The movie succeeds in connecting with the audience as the theme of the movie is the common story of all metros throughout India. Kiran Rao just creates the collage of Mumbai where the city becomes the primary character overtaking the actors of the movie. For those who have the eye and the patience to be part of a film that is different it s a worthwhile watch. All in all Dhobi Ghat happens to be a film that I won t be able to forget in quite some time Presented by Arun Kr. Shukla M.Sc. Tech. Mathematics IV Critic s Rating: Very Good There are fleeting moments of happiness and pain, and the eventual realization that the journey never ends. The struggle to survive and to connect is eternal.

STUDENTS CANVAS P A G E 12 Ten Commandments of Quizzing 1. Thou shall never prepare for a (good) quiz. Good quizzes are those quizzes for which it is meaningless to prepare beforehand at short notice. A good quiz always tests one s knowledge and one s mastery over trivia gained over one s entire lifetime, therefore, it is pointless to study for a quiz. Good quizzers realize this and never prepare for a good quiz at the last moment. A quiz is not an exam! 2. Thou shall quiz for fame, glory and fortune. The biggest motivation for a quizzer is not the love for quizzing but it s usually money or glory or both. It might sound shallow but that is the way good quizzers go about participating and winning. The quizzing circuit of Delhi University is perhaps the most rewarding one in terms of quick easy money. And winning quizzes at the top IIMs is an achievement big enough to be told to one s grandchildren. 3. Thou shall quiz with a team. Nearly all quizzing happens with teams pitted against each other. One should try to build a good team right from the start and then stick with it. A good quizzing team is a balanced team where each member is strong in some particular field (s). Team members need to know each other really well and most importantly need to have the right amount of trust in each other s capabilities and one s own capabilities. One can quiz alone but it s not much fun and should be avoided. 4. Thou shall listen to the quizmaster even if he is wrong. The quizmaster is god. Questioning the quiz master on the questions or on the correctness of the answers while the quiz is going on is foolish. It s better to take up the issue after the quiz. However, one is always free to protest against the unfair application of some rule or on incorrect tabulation of scores during the quiz. 5. Thou shall not cheat. No need to explain it s not fun plus you get damned to hell. 6. Thou shall accept defeat graciously. Nobody likes to lose. But nobody likes to be at the receiving end of a sore loser as well. Good quizzers accept whatever the final results are and move on. There is always another quiz in another place at another time and there is no point in throwing tantrums. 7. Thou shall guess. A quizzer must guess if he has just some faint idea about the answer. 8. Thou shall take risks. A quizzer should be a risk taker. 9. Thou shall keep scores. Never rely on the score keeper. 10. Thou shall enjoy quizzing. Good quizzers win quizzes because they enjoy quizzing. It s impossible to win a quiz if one is bored with it. Geromic George M.A. Economics
