1 On Positive and Negative Self-Talk Study and research work by Philippe L. De Coster, B.Th., D.D. In entering upon this brief course of instruction, each of you should, so far as possible, lay aside previous theories and beliefs; By so doing will be saved the trouble of trying, all through this manuscript to put new wine into old wineskins, proverb we all know too well in our Western Society. If there is anything, as the article proceeds, which you do not understand or even agree with, just let it lie passively in your mind until you read it all and pondered on. Many statements that would at first arouse antagonism and discussion will come clear and easily accepted in this time and age. The main reason of this work on positive and negative self-talk, should be the solution to the very pain that you may suffer, the very failure to demonstrate over some matter that touches your own life deeply, may rest upon just this spirit of unforgiveness or even intolerance that you may harbour toward the world in general; Put is away with resolution. Do not be under the bondage of false beliefs about your circumstances or environment. No matter how evil present circumstances or environment are today world-wide, how evil it all may appear as the Islamic State situation for example, how evil these circumstances may appear the world over, or how much it may seem that some other personality is at the foundation of your sorrow or

2 trouble, goodness alone, meaning that which is positive is the only law of expression. It is perfectly natural for the human mind to seek to escape from its troubles by running away from their present environments as the refugees do from Syria and Iraq at the moment, escaping to Europe. And, we daily see that the methods of escaping are absolutely vain and foolish. Even in Atheism, there is no permanent or real outward way of escape from miseries or circumstances; all help must come from within, from your mind, from yourself. Victory must be won in the silence of your own being first, and then you need take no part in the outer demonstration of relief from conditions. The sun does not radiate life and warmth today and darkness and chill tomorrow; it cannot, from the nature of its being. We should know for sure: Human mind, or intellect, makes mistakes because it gathers much information from without. Our ways of thinking make our happiness or unhappiness, or success or non-success. We can, by effort, change our ways of thinking. Denials All systems for spiritualising the mind include denial. Every religion in all the ages had some denial as one of its foundations. We all know how the Puritans (Quakers), and the puritans in Calvinism, and the Evangelicals, the Jehovah Witnesses; the Roman Catholics in particular the Opus Dei movement and many more, believe that the more rigid they deny themselves, they better they are pleasing God, the god-spot within themselves as beside there is no God. Man is the creator of the deities and religions. So far as the religious idea is taken possession of the human mind, these devout souls have as such tortured mind and body in various ways, believing that they are thus making themselves more spiritual, or at least are thus making themselves more spiritual, or at least are in some way placating and angry God or Allah. To please a religion man must give up about all the enjoyment and comfort which in all freedom is entitled to, all things he likes and wants, and must take up the heavy cross of bondage, and as such constantly doing the things that are repugnant to him in his daily life, human relations and sentimental life. As such, many young people say, When I am old I will be a Christian, but not now, for I want to enjoy life awhile (long enough) first. Everyone, the healthy and hard-working person feels the need of some days of 2

3 recreation and rest, that the monotony of life may be broken, not supported by the traditional religions at all. Your real self within is never sick, never afraid or even selfish. It is the part of you that does not look for its own, is not easily provoked, and even thinking no evil. Indeed, we have all believed what the outward appearance has mindfully told us, without having gone in the depths of things, and the consequence is that we have been overwhelmed with all kinds of privation and suffering. Some psychologists of the latter years since Freud, Jung and Assagioli and many others have been making studies of the mind, and find out that it is a fact that certain wrong or false beliefs held by us are really the cause of all sorts of trouble physical, moral and even financial. They have learned that wrong (or, as they call them error ) beliefs arise only in the human mind as religions do. They have also learned and actually proved that we can, by a persistent effort of the will, alter our beliefs, and by this means alone entirely change our troublesome circumstances and bodily conditions. The word denial, deny has two definitions, along the Webster dictionary. To deny in one sense, is to withhold from, as to deny bread to the hungry. To deny, in another sense, it is to declare to be not true, to repudiate as utterly false. To deny oneself, is not to withhold comfort or happiness from the external man, much less to inflict torture upon him, but it is to deny the claims of error consciousness, to declare these claims to be untrue. The first step towards freeing ourselves from our troubles is to get rid of our erroneous beliefs whatever they are religious or not. If a thing is not true and I have believed a lie about it, I do not see just how my believing wrong about it could affect my bodily health or my circumstances. A child can be afraid of an imaginary bugaboo (monster) under the bed as to have convulsions. Should you today, receive an that your friend, husband, wife, or child, who is absent from you, had been suddenly killed, your suffering, mental and physical, and maybe extending even to your external and financial affairs, would be just as great as though the report really were true; and yet it might be entirely false. Exactly so have these messages of bugaboos behind the doors, bugaboos of divine wrath taught in Christianity, Islam and in almost all the world religions, and of our own weakness believing in them, come to us through the senses until we are overcome by our fears of them. The purpose of the man-made religions is to create fear, only fear. Now denial is the first practical step toward wiping out of our minds the mistaken beliefs of a lifetime as religion, being grown with it from birth. 3

4 Religion and other beliefs have made such sad disorder in our lives. By denial we mean declaring not to be true a thing that seems true. Negative appearances are directly opposed to the teachings of what is truthful and real. Suppose you had always been taught that the sun really moved or revolved around our planet earth, and someone should now try to persuade you that the opposite is the only reality. You would see at once that such might be the case, and yet as often as you saw the sun rise, the old impression, made on your mind by the wrong belief of years, would come up and seem almost too real to be disputed. The only way by which you could cleanse your mind of the impression and make the untrue seem unreal, would be by repeatedly denying the old beliefs, saying over and over to yourself as often as the subject comes up in your mind: This is not true. The sun does not move; it stands still, and the earth moves. Eventually the sun would only SEEM to move. Affirmations you may use to erase the god spot and deny religion in your mind, and be totally free and happy: 1. Creationists make it sound like a theory is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night Isaac Asimov 2. I don t believe in God. My god is patriotism. Teach a man to be a good citizen and you have solved the problem of life. Andrew Carnegie 3. All thinking men are atheists. Ernest Hemingway 4. Lighthouses are more helpful than churches. Benjamin Franklin 5. Faith means not wanting to know what is true. Friedrich Nietzsche 6. The fact that a believer is happier than a sceptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. George Bernard Shaw 7. Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile. Kurt Vonnegut 8. I believe in God, only I spell it Nature. The whole thing is so patently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will never be able to rise above this view of life. Our thoughts control our bodies and our circumstances. If you repeatedly deny a false or unhappy condition, it loses its power to make you unhappy. Whatever everyone desires is to have only the good manifested in his life and surroundings, to have his life full of love; to have perfect health; to know all things; to have great power and much joy. I am the Power, I am the Glory, I am another God. Denial brings freedom from all kind of bondages, and true happiness comes when we cab effectually deny the power of anything to touch or to trouble us. No person or thing in the universe, no chain of circumstances, can by any possibility interpose itself between you and all joy, the all good. Denial may be spoken silently or audibly, but not in a manner to call forth antagonism and discussion. Affirmations Developing a positive mind-set is one of the most powerful life strategies there is. Using powerful positive thinking techniques, visualizations and positive affirmations, it is possible to achieve whatever you want. Professionals and business people can use these techniques to develop personal power or gain a competitive edge. At a personal level it will transform your life, your health and 5

6 renew the joy and passion for life. Imagine waking up each morning, bursting with excitement, energy and joy for the new day! It really is that powerful... Most persons, when they first consciously set out to gain a fuller, higher knowledge of psychic things, do so because of dissatisfaction or perhaps unsatisfaction would be the better word with their present conditions of life. Inherent in the human mind is the thought that somewhere, somehow, it ought to be able to bring itself that which it desires and which would satisfy. This thought is but the shadowing of that which really is. Positive affirmations and positive thinking techniques can help develop a powerful and positive attitude to life; which is an essential element in life success and good health. With this power you can turn failure around into success and take success and drive it to a whole new level. Your positive attitude is the fuel for your success. The techniques outlined further on are used either deliberately or instinctively by all the most successful people; and you can use them too. Sound psychological techniques, your own personal power and your connection to the universe can create an awesome combination to manifest any change into your life. There are no limits. Just go for it... prove it for yourself... Every thought you think every word you say is an affirmation All of our selftalk or inner dialogue is a stream of affirmations. We are continually affirming subconsciously with our words and thoughts and this flow of affirmations is creating our life experience in every moment. Our beliefs are just learned thought patterns that we have developed since childhood, many of these work well for us, but others may now be working against us, they are dysfunctional and may be sabotaging us from achieving what we believe we want. Every affirmation we think or say is a reflection of our inner truth or beliefs. It is important to realize that many of these "inner truths" may not actually be true for us now or may be based on invalid or inappropriate impressions we constructed as children, which if examined as an adult can be exposed as inappropriate. Indeed, to affirm anything is to assert positively that it is so, even in the face of all contrary evidence. We may not to see how, by our simply afforming a thing to be true, a thing that all human reasoning or sight does not seem to be true at all, we can bring this thing to pass; but we can compel ourselves to cease all futile quibbling as religion and superstition and go to work to prove the rule, each one in his own life. 6

7 Our subconscious uses the behaviour patterns we have learned to automatically respond and react to many everyday events in our life. This is essential to our survival, we need to be able to respond quickly to events around us which would be impossible if we had to re-examine every aspect of things every time something simple happens. Our learned responses and thought patterns enable us to automatically respond to circumstances quickly and easily. Problems arise however, if at an early stage some of the foundation beliefs on which many of the others are built were formed from a skewed perspective, maybe the strategy was appropriate for a perceived difficult circumstance, however often such beliefs are totally inappropriate for succeeding in the real world as adults. You can use "Positive Affirmations", which are usually short positive statements targeted at a specific subconscious set of beliefs, to challenge and undermine negative beliefs and to replace them with positive self-nurturing beliefs. It is a kind of "brainwashing" only you get to choose which negative beliefs to wash away. The way these statements are constructed is extremely important. Later I will show you how to construct you own affirmations. It is important to remember of course that everything we say and think is a positive affirmation, using positive affirmation statements forces us to keep focussed on our inner goals and reminds us to think consciously about our words and thoughts and to modify them to reflect our positive affirmation. The saying over and over of any denial or affirmation is a necessary training of the mind that has lived so long in error and false belief as in religion that it needs this constant repetition of Truth or Only Reality to unclothe it and to clothe is anew: destroy and restore. Affirmations do work! You will be hard pushed to find any self-help program anywhere that does not include affirmations, even the ones that appear to poohpooh affirmations include them under some slightly different guise. And the reason for this is, they work. The more determined you are to make your changes, the more you are prepared to accept change and let go of the past, the better they will work for you. By choosing to think and say positive affirmations as true, the subconscious is forced into one of two reactions - avoidance or reappraisal. The bigger the issue the bigger the gap between the positive affirmation and the perceived inner truth and the more likely that one is going to experience resistance. This is where the subconscious finds it easier to stay with its perceived inner truth and avoid the challenge using any means at its disposal to avoid examining the issue. You will recognise this reaction by a strong negative feeling inside as you state the positive affirmations. Equally if your experience a sense of joy and wellbeing, 7

8 your mind is instinctively responding to something it believes to be true. When you get this emotion, you know your affirmations are working! Continually repeating affirmations with conviction and passion will chip away at even the strongest resistance. However there are a number of additional techniques you can use that will super-charge your affirmations and magnify their effectiveness many fold. I will outline these techniques for you later. Once the resistance is broken, your subconscious is able to re-examine the core belief and patterns you have been working on. The effect can be startling and things can change very quickly as the dysfunctional beliefs get identified and replaced by your own new inner truth. Depending on how deep into your consciousness these beliefs lay, every other learned pattern and belief that relied on the original belief as a premise, becomes unfounded. The subconscious has to re-examine them all, this can lead to a period of introspection. If you find yourself experiencing serious resistance or have identified an area of trauma in your life, I strongly urge you to seek professional support, the journey you are embarking on will release you from the past but having proper support around you as you go through the process will make it so much easier. Because affirmations actually reprogram your thought patterns, they change the way you think and feel about things, and because you have replaced dysfunctional beliefs with your own new positive beliefs, positive change comes easily and naturally. This will start to reflect in your external life, you will start to experience seismic changes for the better in many aspects of your life. From day one, there will be affirmations you love and enjoy saying, these affirmations are likely to be very effective for you and you are likely to start experience changes almost immediately. Others will feel very negative, almost like a big lie, this indicates resistance and these areas may take longer to impact. How quickly you can resolve an issue like this is like asking how long is a piece of string. It depends on the issue, how deeply the belief is held and how determined you are to bring about change in that area of your life, the latter being perhaps the most important of all. If you are truly ready and want to make changes, the quicker those changes will come for you. People have made cognitive changes in their beliefs almost instantaneously, once you are prepared to embrace and accept a change and you believe it to be right for you from your very heart, then that change will happen. So it is not really a question of time, more a question of how accepting of change you can be. You should be under no illusion that by embarking on this process you are starting a journey for your lifetime. As you see and experience the techniques working for yourself will be driven to explore your inner-self further and other techniques. As you make your changes in one aspect of your life, other issues 8

9 will pop up that you may want to deal with. The joy is, you would now have the knowledge and skill to deal with these issues effectively. No matter what aspect of life you're dealing with or who you are, affirmations will not only make you feel better about yourself and your life. But if used correctly, they can manifest real change in your life. Changing the way you think, reprogramming your mind and removing the old negative beliefs that have been sabotaging you again and again throughout your life. They can enable you to achieve the life you've always wanted for yourself! If you have a specific issue you wish to explore with affirmations, I have listed some example affirmations for some common issues here. Affirmations for Health Affirmations for Abundance Affirmations for Love Affirmations for Romance Affirmations for Weight Loss Affirmations for Self Esteem Affirmations for Peace and Harmony Affirmations for Joy and Happiness Affirmation for healing. (You don t need to go to Lourdes (France) to obtain healing, or even to a religious healer. The power of healing is within you.) Why doesn't everyone use Affirmations? We all do! It has been demonstrated that nearly ninety percent of our thoughts are negative, no wonder we find ourselves struggling. Each negative thought or word is a negative affirmation and these nasty little beasts can be even more powerful than positive affirmations because we often find them easier to accept. It is these negative thoughts that feed and validate our negative internal beliefs. Under this kind of negative bombardment most people simply do not have the strength to break free of their negative thoughts and become hopelessly locked into their own (usually false) negative beliefs. Positive affirmations are designed to challenge those negative beliefs and start to stem the flow of negative thoughts and words that seek to validate them. Affirmations are more than just repeating words. It is a whole process of becoming aware of your thoughts and words in everyday life, choosing to think and project happy positive thoughts. The more you can consciously inject the spirit of you affirmations into your daily thoughts and words, the quicker they will work for you. 9

10 No definite rules can be laid down as to which will work most effectually in each individual case to eradicate apparent evil and bring the good into manifestation, but some little hint that may be helpful can be given below. Denials have an erasive or dissolving tendency. Affirmations build up, and give strength, courage and power. Persons who remember vividly, and are inclined to dwell in their thoughts on the pains, sorrows, and troubles of the past or present, need to deny a great deal; for denials cleanse the mind and blot out of memory all seeming evil and unhappiness, so that they become as a faraway dream. Again denials are particularly useful to those who are hard or intolerant as the fundamentalists are under religious people. They can be aggressively sinful; to those who as a result of free-thought have become completely confident, thinking the human (the other god) is sufficient in itself and for all things. Affirmations should be used by the timid and by those who have a feeling of their own inefficiency; those who stand in fear of other minds; those who give in easily; to who are subject to anxiety or doubt, and those who are in positions of responsibility. Persons who are in any way negative or passive need to use affirmations more; the ones who are self-confident or unforgiving, need denials more. How to make your own affirmations Start by taking some time to think about areas in your life you would like to improve and how you might want your life to be. It is worth taking some time over this process. Write the most important ones down in a list. Now look at each item on the list and write out a few positive statements for each. They must be positive and in the present tense, focus on what you do want, not on what you don't want. For example if my list of things that were important to me included... "A fulfilling job!" My affirmation might look like this: I have a wonderful job that fulfils me on many levels. Creating your own affirmations is the perfect way to get the right affirmations for you. For example, in the early stages, some of the affirmations you will use 10

11 will be "releasing" in nature, these are designed to assist you in overcoming any initial resistance to the process. Here is an example of a very simple releasing affirmation. "I am ready and willing to release the past, now" Some affirmation methods and ideas Supercharging Affirmations As I have said earlier, there are other techniques you can use that can supercharge the effectiveness of your affirmations. I will outline a few here briefly, if you are interested in really making your affirmations work and want even more details, this area is extensively covered in the Basic Affirmation Guide which you can download for free. Affirmation Mirror work Perhaps the most powerful way of using affirmations is to state them whilst looking in the mirror. Some of the most important messages you have received have been from people looking you straight in the eye. By looking yourself in the eye as you state your affirmation you magnify the importance of the message to yourself. Written Affirmations A great way of keeping your affirmation at the forefront of your mind is to write them down, leave notes or cards around so that you notice them throughout the day. Another idea is to write your affirmation down many times (10-20), this helps imprint it on your mind. Say Affirmations with Passion Say your affirmations with passion, the higher your emotional state as you say them, the more effective they are. Sing or Chant Affirmations One of the most effective ways to use affirmations is to sing them! The mind is much more accepting of affirmation messages when they are sung. 11

12 Subliminal Affirmations There are a number of techniques that attempt to by-pass the conscious mind and its resistance by transmitting the affirmations to you subliminally. There are a number of New Age CD's available that include subliminal affirmations, the trouble with this technology is that it often comes unsupported and people expect it to simply work without doing anything for themselves. There is however a very powerful technique known as an "affirmation bath". This is often used in workshops because it requires several people sitting around a person making positive statements about them. An Affirmation bath is a truly amazing experience, the multiple voices, coming from multiple directions, often simultaneously simply overwhelm the minds ability to resist what is being said and the positive affirmations slip straight through to the subconscious. It is normally impossible to experience this unless you can get a group of likeminded people together or you attend a workshop. Example Affirmations that Heal Affirmations for Health Every Cell in my body vibrates with energy and health Loving myself heals my life. I nourish my mind, body and soul My body heals quickly and easily Affirmations for Abundance I prosper wherever I turn and I know that I deserve prosperity of all kinds The more grateful I am, the more reasons I find to be grateful I pay my bills with love as I know abundance flows freely through me. Affirmations for Love I know that I deserve Love and accept it now I give out Love and it is returned to me multiplied I rejoice in the Love I encounter everyday Affirmations for Romance I have a wonderful partner and we are both happy and at peace I release any desperation and allow love to find me I attract only healthy relationships 12

Their cause is always the mind, and mind does all its work in the realm of silence, which in reality is the only realm where sound and power go hand in hand. Indeed, all power has its birth in the silence. There is no exception to this rule in all the evidence of life. Noise is the dying vibration of a spent force. All the clatter of visibility, from the harangue of the ward politician to the thunder s roar, is but evidence of exhausted power. As well try to control the lightning s flash by wrapping the thunder about it, as attempt to regulate mind by statutory enactments. The visible outer world, with all its social, religious, and political laws, customs, and ceremonies, miseries most of the time, is but the flimsy screen upon which mind throws its congruous opinions. All philosophers and psychologists have recognised this silent cause, this perpetual outflow from centre to circumference. Emerson said of Plato: He was born to behold the self-evolving power of Spirit (Mind), endless generator of new ends; a power which is the key at once to the centrality and the evanescence of things. All men who have moved the world to better things have received their inspiration from the Mind within and have always looked to it for instruction. As such all is building from centre to circumference. The evidence for this runs from the molecule and the atom of the physicist to the mighty swing of a universe of planets around their central sun. 25

26 Every act of man has its origin in thought, in the brain, which is expressed into the phenomenal world from a mental centre that is but a point of radiation for an energy that lies back of it. That point of radiation is the conscious I, which in its correct relation is one with the Cosmos, or Cosmic Cause, and has at its command all the powers potential in Cause along metaphysics. Nearer to ourselves, life is a problem solvable by a major principle whose essence is intelligence, which the wise man always consults. However, the ignorant and the fanatic, the headstrong trusts to his intellect alone to carry him through, and as such he is always in a labyrinth of errors and danger. If you imagine that your subconscious mind is like a hard disk of a computer, over time the mind, just like a computer can get cluttered by bad programs and corrupt files. In your human mind these bad programs and corrupt files can be related to negative influences in your environment, disempowering information from the media, bad habits that you pick up over time, chronic stress and even the food and drink we consume. This hard disk is responsible for your heart beat, your breathing, your long term memory, your digestive system, your immune system and the majority of the processing power of your thoughts and emotions takes place here too. So when this goes wrong, so does your health, your wellbeing, your mind power and even your ability to attract and manifest the things that you want. Thankfully you can correct these bad programs by using meditation techniques with positive affirmations. Positive affirmations we know are suggestions that you make to your subconscious mind that change your habitual thinking patterns. However your subconscious mind cannot differentiate between negative and positive. For example if you want to attract money, you cannot say things like I don t want to be poor because your subconscious mind will act upon the word poor, ignoring the word don t and will bring that result instead. So you must choose what you say to your subconscious mind very carefully and that is why we use positive affirmations. Your subconscious mind is most open to suggestions while you are in the alpha brainwave state (see page 28). This state of mind is when you are most relaxed and calm. You produce most alpha waves when you are in a meditative state or just before you go to sleep and have your eyes closed. You can also produce alpha waves using a special technology known as brainwave entrainment or alpha wave producing meditation music. While you are in this alpha state you can now start to repeat positive affirmations to your subconscious, by chanting them out loud, or just repeating them consciously with conviction in your mind. 26

27 Five Steps to Success with Affirmations They must be said while in an alpha state, a positive state of conscious focus They must be all affirmative and said with conviction and confidence They should involve a specific action Repetition is essential, so the more times you repeat an affirmation the better. It should become a daily practice. Be aware that positive affirmations do not magically manifest results, what they do instead is open your subconscious to new channels of information and opportunity, so you must take action on these in order for any major changes to happen to your life. Always remember to pick the right statements for your intentions, then make it a daily habit to clear the clutter and reprogram your subconscious mind! With repetition as my dad always said when I went to school Bene, bene respondare, when coming from a position of confidence and conviction, affirmations can be a powerful tool to spark changes within your mind from which you can really take action and see a huge difference in your way of life! To demonstrate supply, we must think supply, and so form it in the consciousness. We must conserve all the ideas of substance in the mind, and also the fluids of the body, their representatives, because we must have a base for our form. We must vibrate the love centre in thought, word, and act. Then there will come to us on the wings of invisibility that which will satisfy every need.. You must trust love to get you out of the difficulties. There is nothing too hard for it to accomplish for you, if you put your confidence in it and without dissimulation. But do not talk love and in your heart feel resentment. This will bring discord to your members and rottenness to your bones. Love is candor and frankness. Deception is no part of love; he who tries to use it in that sort or company will prove himself a liar, and love will desert him in the end. When love has begun its silent pulsations at one s solar centre, no one can keep one in want or poverty. From the invisible currents of the inner ether (mind), love will draw to man all that belongs to him that is required to make him happy and contented. 27

28 Your Brain Waves All about them It s important to understand how your brain contributes to the state of your mind. While most of us focus on looking at our emotions in an attempt to become happier, more spiritual beings, our brains waves and our subconscious mind also play a key part in our quest for fulfilment. It s important to understand how your brain contributes to the state of your mind. While most of us focus on looking at our emotions in an attempt to become happier, more spiritual beings, our brains waves and our subconscious mind also play a key part in our quest for fulfilment. In this article, we ll be looking at our five brain wave frequencies and how they affect our state of mind, and will be following up on Thursday with a more indepth look at the impact they have on us physically and mentally, in addition to some exercises we can do to switch on certain frequencies. Are We the Controllers of our Reality? We easily forget that we are the controllers of our reality and that our reality is not made up of outside influences, but that it actually consists of our thoughts, beliefs and mind-set. Therefore, by learning about the deeper states of consciousness, you can open your subconscious mind and create your reality at will, and with precision. To do this, the first step is understanding your different brain frequencies. Did you know that we all have five (Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta and Gamma), and each frequency is measured in cycles per second (Hz) and has its own set of characteristics representing a specific level of brain activity and a unique state of consciousness? Smart, eh? 1) Beta (14-40Hz) The Waking Consciousness And Reasoning Wave Beta brain waves are associated with normal waking consciousness and a heightened state of alertness, logic and critical reasoning. While Beta brain waves are important for effective functioning throughout the day, they also can translate into stress, anxiety and restlessness. The voice of Beta can be described as being that nagging little inner critic that gets louder the higher you go into range. Therefore, with a majority of adults operate at Beta; it s little surprise that stress is today s most common health problem. 28

29 2) Alpha (7.5-14Hz) The Deep Relaxation Wave Alpha brain waves are present in deep relaxation and usually when the eyes are closed, when you re slipping into a lovely daydream or during light meditation. It is an optimal time to program the mind for success and it also heightens your imagination, visualization, memory, learning and concentration. It is the gateway to your subconscious mind and lies at the base of your conscious awareness. The voice of Alpha is your intuition, which becomes clearer and more profound the closer you get to 7.5Hz. 3) Theta (4-7.5Hz) The Light Meditation And Sleeping Wave Theta brain waves are present during deep meditation and light sleep, including the all-important REM dream state. It is the realm of your subconsciousness and only experienced momentarily as you drift off to sleep from Alpha and wake from deep sleep (from Delta). It is said that a sense of deep spiritual connection and unity with the universe can be experienced at Theta. Your mind s most deep-seated programs are at Theta and it is where you experience vivid visualizations, great inspiration, profound creativity and exceptional insight. Unlike your other brain waves, the elusive voice of Theta is a silent voice. It is at the Alpha-Theta border, from 7Hz to 8Hz, where the optimal range for visualization, mind programming and using the creative power of your mind begins. It s the mental state which you consciously create your reality. At this frequency, you are conscious of your surroundings however your body is in deep relaxation. 4) Delta (0.5-4Hz) The Deep Sleep Wave The Delta frequency is the slowest of the frequencies and is experienced in deep, dreamless sleep and in very deep, transcendental meditation where awareness is fully detached. Delta is the realm of your unconscious mind, and the gateway to the universal mind and the collective unconscious, where information received is otherwise unavailable at the conscious level. Among many things, deep sleep is important for the healing process as it s linked with deep healing and regeneration. Hence, not having enough deep sleep is detrimental to your health in more ways than one. 5) Gamma (above 40Hz) The Insight Wave This range is the most recently discovered and is the fastest frequency at above 40Hz. While little is known about this state of mind, initial research shows Gamma waves are associated with bursts of insight and high-level information processing. 29
