Every Sunday, I see the Christ in you as you greet one another with such love. And, you are supportive, helping someone who may be in the mist of challenges, assuring them that with God within them... All IS well. Yet, the world is full of uncertainty, and many things seem to be beyond our control. But with every step we here in this Spiritual Community take, God, within, is empowering us to take that step! And we are! 2014 is the Year of I AM. The words I AM ARE A HOLY EXPRESSION FOR THE NAME OF GOD THE HIGHEST ASPECT OF YOURSELF. This year, we explore the highest possibility for our lives by choosing a quality to focus on and express. I AM Boundless. Real. Courageous.. Aware. Adventurous. Lighthearted.. Outrageous.. 2 President s Message that their essential nature is divine. aulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist and other P literary works, reminds us that children in all their splendor and innocence can teach us many things. Particularly, to be happy for no reason; to always be busy with something, and to know how to demand with all his/her might that which she/he desires. Every Sunday after singing our children in to Walking in the Light, are hearts become filled with joy and wonder as we watch the youth display their art work, share profound insights, and sing and prance so proudly around the platform. We would all agree that they are precious and bring light to our community and the world! How fortunate these young ones are to be raised with Unity s message that they are each individual expressions of God and Our children inspire hope and innocence in us today while simultaneously they hold the aspirations and promise of a light filled future. So, how do we tend to our most precious gift, our children? We can emphatically attest that Sally Kurth, director of our children s church program, and the teachers along with the children s musical director, Jasmine Walker, do an outstanding job with the resources they have. How are the rest of us encouraging the growth of our youth? One of the greatest needs that has presented itself for years at UBTS regarding our children s church program has been limited classroom space. Each Sunday all age groups gather in the one fellowship area behind an accordion wall. The teachers all perform their magic with our children despite the numerous interruptions they encounter while many open the make shift wall to retrieve materials from the office spaces on the other side of children s church. Over the winter months, the Board of Trustees has been engaged in the exploration of how we could expand our classroom space. A digital survey of the property has been completed and the Board has had several meetings with Steve Bias, an architect who has tithed his services to UBTS, to contemplate the most economical and feasible expansion plan. Steve has advised the Board that the best place to expand would be on the left side of our building. He is currently drawing up blueprints for new classrooms and additional bathrooms. In the meantime, the Board of Trustees is investigating funding options with our current bank and other financial initiations. When the blueprints and financial information has been obtained the Board will hold an informational meeting. Oneness is one of our core values at UBTS. We profess that we are one in spirit every Sunday. So, I invite the whole of our community to unite in tending to the children by making an expansion a reality. Know that this vision rests on the prayers, actions, and financial support of not only the leadership, but of every individual here at UBTS. In the upcoming months, Rev Joanne and the Board will hold community sessions to gather together to affirm and actively get involved in the manifestation of an expanded and thriving children s church program You are to take care of the children. ~ Myrtle Fillmore Exciting News! The installation of a projection screen, projector and upgrade to our sound system has been completed. The Board will host a celebratory unveiling event in the near future. Look for the announcement! 2

3 The Healing Circle Prayer and Healing by Gayle Hammond ear friends of Unity, I thought I would tell D you a little bit about how our monthly healing circle came to be what it is today. When a congregant asked for prayer prior to major surgery we put out a call for folks to stay after service and stay they did. About 20 folks took part and offered prayer, Reiki, and healing touch to our congregant and then we did it again for me when I was going to have knee replacement. A few of the prayer chaplains along with Rev. Joanne, realized that after Sunday service was the time to offer our healing circle and not on Tuesday evenings as we had been doing. And so our Sunday Healing Circle was born. To those who have not attended, we talk a little about the healing of Myrtle Fillmore, cofounder of Unity along with her beloved husband, Charles. We pray, chant, meditate, do hands on touch, go into gratitude, do one more chant and we close a very powerful, sacred time. I invite you to join us the second Sunday of every month. (August is an exception, it will be on the third Sunday) At this time, I want to thank the light workers who are there each month giving of themselves as instruments of love: Nancy Baird, Pat Dunkin, Angela Denton, Edy Chartier, Aileen Meares, Donna Maloney, James Wilson and others who volunteer their time. A warm and grateful thank you. A special thank you to Angela for designing the service that we use today. And a thank you to you the congregants for supporting the effort for the past five years. Those of you who are seeking Reiki Level I training already have an idea of what Reiki is; perhaps you even receive Reiki treatments on a regular basis; perhaps you have a desire to practice Reiki on yourselves or others; perhaps you have a desire to continue to study Reiki and to train in all the levels; perhaps you have an interest in integrative and complimentary medicine; perhaps you want to change the world starting by changing yourself to be an instrument of peace and a channel for healing energy. Whatever your reasons, at this time we define Reiki as a spiritual healing practice that can help return us to balanced functioning on every level-physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and even social regardless of our age or state of health. 5 A GUIDE TO NATURAL PEST CONTROL By Ingrid Justick Our Environment ow that spring has arrived, it will not be long before N uninvited creatures invade your garden. It may be beetles feasting on your flowers or deer devouring the tomato plants. Follow these guidelines to get rid of animal pests without resorting to dangerous poisons. Deer: They have a taste for a w ide range of plants but are mistrustful of certain scents. Organic deer repellents, such as Liquid Fence of Deer-Away are available. Experiment with homemade repellents. My favorite in a blender mix 2 eggs, 4 cups water, 1 cup of skim milk, and a few drops of liquid soap. Let stand for 24 hours. Place this mixture in a sprayer and mist plants. Repeat after heavy rains. Rabbits: Repellents such as for deer are effective, or sprinkle cayenne pepper or blood meal around plants. Make your own hot pepper spray by mixing 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper with 1 quart water. Slugs and snails: They eat holes through broad-leaf plants. To limit damage, place a few empty tuna or cat food cans in the soil, up to their brims, then pour beer in them. Slugs and snails are attracted to beer and drown in the cans. Install beer traps in spring before they have a chance to reproduce. Japanese Beetles: They are very fond of rosebushes and butterfly bushes, but they eat virtually any plant. To fight back, put soapy water in a wide bowl and hold it under the branches of beetle-affected plants, gently shake the branches and most of the beetles will drop into the bowl and drown. A long-term solution is to apply Milky Spore Disease Powder (available in garden centers) to your lawn, near your flowers. Call your local garden center for the most effective time to apply; it differs from year to year according to the weather. In two years, the disease treatment will take hold, killing beetle grubs in the soil. The disease is harmless to humans, pets and beneficial insects. Voles: This tiny rodent can consume close to their body w eight in tubers and bulbs each day. When you plant bulbs, arrange a handful of sharp crushed gravel around them in the hole to keep voles away. Woodchucks or groundhogs: You w ill see them in your garden early in the morning or late in the afternoon munching on a variety of green vegetation. Place fresh fruit in a humane trap: after the door closes, transfer the animal many, many miles away from your home. Release in a wooded area, as they have been known to return. I found Yard-Guard Electronic Pest Chaser a safe, green, non-toxic solution to keep destructive pests away. It is available from Home Depot. Enjoy your beautiful garden in a pest-free, non-toxic environment. 5
