This process has the power to take us into areas of experience, both present and past for healing, that we would otherwise avoid. Healing ourselves in this way creates personal power and emotional health, as well as physical health. This year Heyoan suggests there is a more direct path to physical health: Healing the physical and energetic together through pleasure. I have, for much of my life, done what I was supposed to do next being very responsible to commitments, especially commitments to others. As a result of this channeling, I am living in much more pleasure. Pleasure of all kinds, what I like to do, where I want to be, and what I want to do. It is working great. I have shifted to my commitment to my pleasure, leaving much more space for what I want to do now. It is working very well so far. Enjoy!!! We bring you the possibility that pleasure can be enjoyed unabashedly, without judgment, without it being seen as negative in any way, in every part of your body. Every cell in your body moves toward pleasure and functions on pleasure. It is pleasure that initiates your breathing. It is pleasure with which your energy field pulses on the creative force of love. No matter how anyone else behaves, you can still choose love, kindness, clarity, truth. They are the most pleasurable! Divine precision is the word of God flowing through you on the creative force of love that moves through every cell, through every breath, through every being. Divine precision holds a space for the pleasure of being you. Whatever is the most comfortable way for you to grow and unfold is right for you because it is your pleasure. There are many purposes within your body, each riding the wave of pleasure. Feel the pulsation of pleasure in your body. Feel the pulsation of pleasure in each cell. Notice how everything in your body likes to move. The human body is a fluid body. It functions through the pleasure of movement, percussion, pulses and the flow of fluids. Priscilla Bright New BBSH School Dean From Barbara: Hello everyone! I m pleased to announce that Kahea Morgan who has served as School Dean of BBSH United States for several years is now moving into the position of School Dean for the new BBSH Japan (BBSHJ). BBSHJ will open next fall for Year 1 Classes. So tell all of your friends the exciting news! I m also happy to announce that Priscilla Bright has become the new School Dean for BBSH in the U.S., and will become the Year 2 Class Dean in the U.S. next year. Priscilla took over BBSH the third class of this year and is already doing a great job. She has, in the past, put a lot of effort into streamlining the paperwork and administration. Kahea Morgan New BBSH Japan School Dean From Priscilla Bright: BBSH United States As I write this column, we ve just completed Class 3 at BBSH, and so are more than halfway through the school year. Being the midpoint of the year, Class 3 is a time of some reflection for students when they assess their remaining challenges for the year, and gather themselves to step forward into those challenges. This week also seemed like a time of deepening, as the students journeys expanded to new and deeper levels, as they connected even more fully into the templates of their specific years of study. At this halfway point, I too take time to reflect, to see if I am taking my own steps to challenge my images, and risk new ways of being. And I ask myself, In this school year, have I been as I long to be as a person and a teacher? Am I fully present to this journey, and if not, how can I arrive more fully? As faculty, we are on the journey of the school year right along with the students, opening ourselves to the spiritual and personal growth and healing that comes throughout the year as we work with Barbara s and Heyoan s teachings. For our HMD lectures this week we had a presentation by Year 3 Dean Donnalea Goelz, who spoke on Movement and Personal Process. On the second evening, we had a presentation by faculty members Steve Stroud (Year 3), Kate Pernice (Year 2), John Shordike (Year 4 Assistant Dean and BBSHE Year 4 Dean), and Hiroko Tsukiji-Steinberg (Year 4) who each spoke on the unique ways they integrate Brennan Healing Science into their work and lives. Both HMD evenings involved student participation, and were engaging and full. Thanks to all of the teachers who shared their energy and wisdom! During this class week the students were full of excitement and anticipation about Creative Arts, as they began preparation and planning for their Creative Arts projects, which will be exhibited and performed at Class 4. The projects have become an amazing community event, and the energy for it is already building. The school year so far has been rich and full. Blessings to everyone on our continuing journey!

3 From Kahea Morgan: BBSH Japan We say welcome to some of our new BBSHJ students! BBSHJ will open its doors September 13, 2007 in Tokyo, and we are hoping to draw students from all of Asia and the South Pacific. I had an opportunity in March at an IBHS in Tokyo to work with and listen to our graduates and students from Japan. (See photos on pages 10 and 11!) I found their commitment to Brennan Healing Science and their passion for awakening inspiring. Satoshi Hirosawa and Kazuyo Kawamura, both BBSH PS4s, spoke in the evening school talk of their experience in traveling to Florida for 4 years their challenges in being in a country so different from theirs the difficulties of not speaking English and the emotional rollercoaster rides of BBSH. They made us all laugh and smile as they shared their stories. Both Satoshi and Kazuyo beautifully transmitted their passion and excitement of how their work in the school has changed their lives and relationships with friends and family. They concluded that the adventure was more than they ever expected, and their infectious passion that night helped inspire the first 20 BBSHJ students to enroll! Taeko Yuchi, 2000 BBSH graduate, was a member of the very first Japanese class of 12 at BBSH. She told me that BBSH graduates in Japan have a huge influence in the Japanese new age spiritual community, and she feels the first stage of the journey was the first BBSH Japanese class in the U.S. The beginning of BBSHJ, Taeko believes, is the second stage to make the enlightenment bridge bigger and more stable. Now more can communicate in authentic method and make the template here stronger. Somi Hongo, a 2001 BBSH graduate, shared with me that her feelings about BBSHJ opening in Japan are very personal. I will feel more understood, she said firmly. Even though I have spiritual friends, they are not serious about awakening, but more interested in manifesting money and comfort. With BBSHJ here, more people will be on a path of awakening. This is what I am excited about more people on the path. I wanted to hear more, so I asked Satsuki Nishimura, an AS2 graduate in 2006, what BBSHJ opening in September means to her. Satsuki, an investment banker and consultant, feels that Japanese business and economy are very famous worldwide. However, she shared, the Japanese culture is often viewed by foreigners as distant, closed and mysterious. Opening a very special 3 healing school in Japan and drawing students from all of Asia, Satsuki feels, is an opportunity for a bridge of understanding between east and west cultures. Although the BHS method is westernized, Satsuki sees BBSHJ as a bridge to the spiritual, psychological and physical worlds to understand a healing path in a safe way. It is exciting, she said, that the good container and method of BBSH will be presented in a worldwide healing center in Japan. So there you have it a taste of the excitement bubbling among our graduates and students in Japan. I too am very thrilled and honored to be a part of this new bridge of cultural understanding, healing and awakening. Arigato Gozaimasu! From Laurie Keene: BBSH Europe Gratitude, A Way of Living Beyond Practice It has been interesting to experience the transition from practicing gratitude to living it. Study after study has proven that gratitude above all is the emotion that shifts one into higher consciousness, initiating a welcome response from the Universe. It is a state that naturally bestows grace and well-being on the one who is grateful. I had always practiced gratitude until a few months ago. It usually required a conscious effort on my part. One day I realized I was no longer consciously focusing my attention on what I was grateful for, but rather the feeling of gratitude sprung seemingly on its own volition into my heart and mind. Since that moment, the gratitude within me is like a spring, upwelling into my awareness many, many times each day. I have discovered gratitude to be a friend, with a beautiful consciousness all its own. How much is there to be grateful for? you might ask. There is a lovely Hindu story about a man who lived in a village. Each day he could be seen in the town square praising and thanking God. The villagers would look at him and shake their heads, not understanding. One day the people awoke to the sound of a great storm. Rain, wind and hail were lashing the town. Finally, they said, he will have nothing to be grateful for. They looked out their doors and there was the man, as always, in the middle of the square praising and thanking God. A villager called out to him, What can you possibly be grateful for today? The man answered, I m thanking God that not all days are like this one! If you have not begun a gratitude practice, begin one now. Be grateful for your breath. Be grateful that, in this moment, you are alive in this form and able to experience life, whether joyful or painful. In this moment you get to have the full experience. It will not always be so. Be grateful for the land, family, friends and strangers. For food, air, water. For health. And for the ability to strive to realize your full potential. Make a daily gratitude list. Then wait for the magic. Your gratitude practice will dissolve into a loving prayer. It will shimmer and illuminate. It is the nectar of God. The Universe is a most willing lover. It only awaits your kiss of gratitude so it may respond in kind. They say the kingdom of heaven is within us. Gratitude is the fastest way I know of getting there!

4 Celebrating Bahni Lahma Ask and It Is Given: Everyday Magic Dear Bahni: This is a love song, a love feast, to the dancing, laughing and loving goddess who chose to transition just before Valentine's Day. We honor you Bahni your wild expression, your thinking out of the box, your deep sweetness, your constant reaching out for more more pleasure, deeper contact. We enjoy you Bahni your colorful essence, your playfulness, your full-of-surprises nature, with no boundaries, no limits. We honor your humanitarian battles. You are a planet healer. Bahni, you are so alive to every one of us, so present. We can smell the Starbucks latte, dive into a chocolate madness feast with sensuality, and follow your laugh with so much wisdom and innocence. Bahni, the Water Goddess of our ceremony, you are present in our healing and guiding us. Your choice reminds us how deeply we are connected beyond lifetimes, how deeply we love each other beyond words. Your choice reminds us that it is so easy to slip into our lives and forget who we really are, hold back, forget the Divinity within us. Bahni, you have lived out loud and we can hear you loving us. In return, love is pouring out loud from each and every one of us. Our core stars are expanding. We are one. We are whole. With love, gratitude, and in unity The Class of 2006 Hogwarts Is Real, and I m Enrolled Introduction by Bonnie Kozak 06 In honor of our friend and colleague, Bahni (Bonnie) Kozak 06, here are excerpts from her Year 4 Project. We thank Bahni s sons Matthew and Aaron for their permission to reprint these passages. As Matthew wrote: I think this is a wonderful idea and know that my mother would be thrilled to have her work circulated as much as possible. She had us read her work all of the time, so this is quite appropriate and would be an honor. Thank you for the love and support that all of BBSH has provided to both my mother since her beginnings with the school one of her favorite places and the source of many of her brightest moments as well as to us since her passing. It s very comforting to know how supportive and otherwise important BBSH and the BBSH community was/is in her physical life and beyond. The Harry Potter book series is the threshold, for anyone at any age, to identify within lifetime after lifetime the need to tell a story. A story where we weave in a new strand each waking day. The innumerable stories of life and living where life is eternal: maybe not yours, maybe not mine, but life is eternal, and now is the time. This paper does not set out to prove anything using scientific methods portraying results in graphs, percentages, lists, cross references, and/or quotes by authorities, be they medical, religious, philosophical or political. This paper is one of many over the millennia that speak to the spirit of the law and not the letter, to the potential more than the reality at hand, and the mind of the heart rather than the head. If we are truly to be healers, we must live in the reality of magic and miracles, to ask for the heart s desire, for our greatest longing, and trust it is given, to trust so deeply that we know, to become the wizards that transform life. Do you believe in magic? It is a perennial question. How many centuries have passed asking that question over and over again? Does it really matter if anyone else but you says, Yes? Psychic abilities are considered common in the Harry Potter series, and most importantly, teachable. As this premise becomes more familiar, more commonplace, maybe more readily understood and appreciated, we can find support for the magical orientation. At BBSH, we learn to live in the magic. 4

5 Hogwarts Is Real I d missed the first week of school and was all but overwhelmed with lessons and homework to catch up on. The Student Workbook listed Grounding, Tan Tien, Chakras, Colors, Modes of Energy, Chelation, Pendulum Readings, Clearing Clouds, HSP, and Holding Levels. Like Harry Potter, I found myself immersed in a world of amazing skills and even more amazing experiences. I was enrolled in the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, otherwise known as BBSH, or lovingly referred to as Hogwarts. Not having young children and not having much spare time, I hadn t read the Harry Potter book that had just been released, but I had heard of J.K. Rowling s rags-to-riches tale. In that first year, I can t even say when or with whom I saw The Sorcerer s Stone, but I do recall lots of comments referring to Hogwarts. Harry Potter was the buzz. The following unpublished haiku poems by Lynn Woodward, a fellow classmate, speak to the general Hogwarts theme in that first year at BBSH: We go to Hogwarts! Sensing new realities, Fingers see, cells sing. If I could fly, how Would I be different? And then, would I care? The eye s magic wand Transforming reality: Burden and blessing. Poverty or wealth? The magic wand of forms, Alchemy at work. Feeling differences, Learning to see with my hand: I go to Hogwarts. Focused attention Magic wand of perspective changing realities. Focused intention Changing the view to life form Lessons at Hogwarts. Everyday Magic My first year at BBSH shot by quickly. Life was a blur. The homework finally got caught up. The skills required practicing to sharpen my High Sense Perception, considered by some to be psychic abilities. One such technique, a Time Capsule Healing, was similar to the pensieve in the Harry Potter books, where a healer can roll back in time and connect to events that have happened. In a Time Capsule Healing, a wave of energy, charged with emotion, surfaces connecting to events that allow the client to experience them in such a way that it is released. In the Muggle world it is generally referred to as memory, and some people have good ones and some not so good. But in the magical world, it is also a tool to explore and relive events in a heightened state of awareness experiencing an event that yields pertinent information through all the various senses, bringing to the fore previously unnoticed or unknown data. As with Harry, events personally not experienced may also be tapped into by the healer. No thought is ever truly lost or forgotten, and with a practiced eye, the perceiver may be able to recognize the qualitative differences of those that are altered. More Everyday Magic To become a healer is to become aware and sensitive to the charge of emotion that underlies the issues at hand, and like a radio, recognize what frequency you re on, learn how to adjust your dials to what pleases you, and find what serves you best in the moment. To be a healer is to facilitate this same practical awareness with the client as they learn to tune into their own unique frequencies, and through the work in healing sessions, to be empowered. continued on next page 5

6 Everyday Magic Hogwarts Is Real continued from preceding page The process itself is simple, but dogmatic scientific and religious perspectives so color our experiences as rational thinking beings that we cannot accept things that help us make us feel good about what we want, what we do, and ourselves. Why does it seem that in most societies we continue to insist on struggle, pain and disease? How did we become so ingrained with the feeling of unworthiness that we have constructed our world with pain as its foundation? For centuries we have cast aside the love and joy available to us in some twisted belief where we feel justified in the shame and diminishment of our earthly corporeal existence. In our attempts to sidestep the emotional fuel of our lives, we keep searching for and creating limited mechanical constructs and absolutes. Whether it be Newtonian or quantum physics, the emotional fuel we supply is key. At BBSH, the realm of all potential and possibility is called the black velvet void. Whether we construct a scientific process and protocol or not, whether we even understand the scientific perspective or not, these realms of magic are accessible to us all, but the qualitative difference lies in our use of this profound and inspiring Source. Why is it easier to construct a mechanical universe where we replace one scientific construct for another that leaves us with yet another cold and sterile basis for what we call reality? Why are we so averse to the power of love, or could it be that science is softening at the edge? In the Muggle world, scientists like Candace Pert, and doctors like Bruce Lipton, are making the connections in ways that we can begin to understand more clearly. Effortless Intention speaks to Belief Systems as well as Negative and Positive Intention. The word effortless brings the connotation of ease, and when our beliefs support the flow of circumstance, our beliefs more smoothly, maybe not quickly, but smoothly as we ride the wave of the Life Pulse through the stages, call us outward and inward. It is the negative habits of thought that create the struggles, the pain, the misery of holding onto beliefs that do not serve our health and happiness. Quite simply, after all my years of studying various disciplines, I always come back to the profound simplicity of the Heart. The place that truly symbolizes being alive, or dead. Love belongs to no one. Love is each of us, every one. Evil is the distortion of our unmet needs. Love never leaves us so much as we move away from it. The soothing we deny ourselves in judgment is the elixir of life. The emotional scale is the key to health. As we pinch off, or freeze the flow of energy, we create our characterological distortions, where we hold onto suspicion, blame, shame, and hatred. We keep ourselves separated from the Core Star the spark, our individual and collective spark, the unifying and individuating aspect of our existence. Is being a healer asking for trouble? That question seems to imply a yes, but actually for a healer, the gem underneath all the digging is to get to the core, to exercise the finding and meeting of Core Essence in each of us. Core Essence shines from that place where we reach beyond space and time to recognize the Source from which all things flow and where all things abide. As science unravels the inner and outer units of our physical existence, the mystery and magic of our Source still begs to be solved. In science we have evidence of the extinction of species that have come before us, but looked at from a different perspective, this same evidence shows that the creating force goes on eternally. As with many wise teachers and healers Buddha, Jesus, Lao Tsu, Mother Teresa, to name a few the message stressed speaks of the God within each of us, and the Source is the creative force of Love. Whether we can appreciate and understand that concept, or not, does not alter its truth. At BBSH, the process of the creative force is called the Life Pulse. Life is an active process of ever becoming. Learning Magic The second year at BBSH reviewed the first year skills and added States of Being, the 4 Dimensions of Humankind, Aura Healing from Unconditional Love, Astral Healing, the Sacred Human Heart, Time Capsule Healings, and an introduction to Lines of Light. The association to Hogwarts grew exponentially! The astral realm is an exploration into the breadth of the imagination where the symbols and archetypes of all worlds...exist. Some of my favorite work has been in the third year at BBSH, where there is 5th Level Surgery, Restructuring Chakras, and Restructuring Organs. In restructuring levels 1, 3, and 7, each finger is like a separate magic wand moving quickly, working with colored lines of light strengthening, repairing, sometimes removing, a shattered mess of energy lines to restructure an area of the body. In Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince, using Destination, Determination, Deliberation is the instruction for mastering the skill of apparating disappearing from one place and 6

7 appearing in another, similar to Beam me up, Scotty. It is a skill every wizard learns, but in energy work, there is no need to apparate to effect a healing. Incorporating determination and deliberation at BBSH, the word Intention is used. The key to apparating and long-distance healing, as with many skills, is to develop a practical degree of effortlessness where mastery yields to Effortless Intention. Long-distance healings occur with the benefit of the client or the healer never leaving the comfort of their home, and we don t have to worry about splinching (when a part of the body is left behind)! Healers work with the Aura, which is called a light body, close and real, but unseen by most people. The nature of light is exactly what we re dealing with in the field of energy healing. At BBSH, we are trained to be sensitive to this light body and work with it to ultimately effect change in the physical body. Science probes out into the galaxies and deeper and deeper into the body, and the basis of our world as light and energy becomes more real to us. As quantum physicists explore the foundations of our world we come closer and closer to understanding how the realm of magic works. The alchemist, the metaphysician, the witch, the wizard and the healer are ever ancient and new again. In similar fashion and in all honesty, the situation parallels what has been a burning conflict between complementary and allopathic medicine. As the fire of the debate is no longer fueled by outworn beliefs of scientific limitations, the dissolution rate allows us to step into our future as each successive generation slowly sheds the old belief systems, allowing new thoughts to broaden our perspective of what is possibly, most probably, and actually real. Create and discover for the joy of it! Repeatedly, Dumbledore asks Harry to speak to his integrity and make giving his word something of greatest value. Harry s ability to be honest with himself and others speaks to the Brennan Policies [Principles] of Practice that outline the expected level of integrity that a healer needs to maintain, this being an ongoing personal, as well as professional, commitment. In life, every moment, we are making our way on some path that leads to what we want or what we don t want in our future. The physical body is a focus for many of these choices as we make our way through our lives, and a healer is someone who will walk with you when asked. At BBSH, totem and power animals as recognized by tribal cultures are also honored and revered as co-creators in healing, but in the end it is the client s self-empowerment that makes the difference. At BBSH, another twist on Defense Against the Dark Arts course (which is taught at Hogwarts) is our study of the five Characterological defenses. There are a number of ways to teach the qualitative differences of the defensive strategies of certain characteristics of emotional energy, but at BBSH, we primarily use the ancient chakra system. In the book Hands of Light, Barbara Brennan refers to the Bio-Energetics model developed by Wilhelm Reich, Alexander Lowen and John Pierrakos, in addition to studying The Pathwork Lectures of Eva Pierrakos to round out the core systems of reference as a Brennan Healer. In the Bio-Energetic model, I would suspect that Harry most often exhibits character traits of the Psychopath, Ron the Masochist, Hermione the Rigid, Neville Longbottom as the Oral, and Luna Lovegood as the classic Schizoid. Hogwarts has a Sorting Hat that determines the placement of students into something like fraternity or sorority Houses Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin to express personality traits offering clues to the use of personal energies. As with any general conclusion, they do not restrict the individual characters and they can lean in positive and negative directions. For example, even though both are in Gryffindor, Hermione uses her intelligence, a distinctive characteristic of Ravenclaw, and Harry can be resentful and let his ego get away with him, as is characterized with Slytherin. Personal therapy sessions throughout the school year are required as each student of BBSH touches more deeply into the negative emotional patterns that do not serve them and as a necessary part of becoming a healing professional. This process work plays a key part to reinforcing the personal responsibility of each healer to themselves, as well as their clients. It is core to the BBSH program that healers are everyday people, and everyone has the seemingly special gifts that we hone in our practices. Hermione often admonishes the witch and wizard community for thinking that wizards and witches are better than everyone else, and because they do not reach out enough, preferring to stay in their ivory towers. BBSH students learn early that everyone has special gifts, which they bring to the world. One of our main goals is to help each client bring their gifts to light, recognizing our human commonality, yet always inspiring the wonder of our being. Unlike Hogwarts, BBSH is a recognized educational institution. continued on page 14 7

8 Synchronicity as Spiritual Guidance by Simone Guenette 94, R.N., BBSHE Year 4 Faculty Our greatest teachings come from personal experience and can awaken us to our true spiritual nature. In 1979, I experienced my first conscious and significant synchronicity. It was an event that would plant the seeds of ongoing exploration of our spiritual nature. Synchronicity has played an important role in my life personally and professionally. Such events, whether seemingly by default or co-created with positive intent, can serve as a form of spiritual guidance and contribute to healing energyconsciousness by awakening us to wholeness. In 1979, my father had a heart attack and I was called to his bedside. He wavered in a tentative clinical status up and down, in and out of the Coronary Care Unit for two weeks. During this time, I returned to work as a psychiatric nurse at the Veterans Medical Center. Family and friends held bedside vigilance and prayerful hopefulness for a positive outcome. And on the twelfth day of this event, I went home from work to find one in a series of clinical nursing books in the mail. With not a lot of enthusiasm for much of anything, I responded to an inner urging to open the package. The topic: Death and Dying. Ahhh, I know all I need to know about that, I said to myself. But something told me to look at it. I flipped through the book, and it fell open to a picture of an old friend, Evelyn. I froze. Evelyn had passed from cancer in 1975, and it had been her wish to write about her experience. And here she was facing me at this vulnerable time in my life, as I was dealing with the possible impending death of my father. Now I must digress and tell you about my experience with Evelyn, to help you appreciate the impact it had on me. We had both worked in the same hospital at the time she was diagnosed. In fact, I was working the very day she had her surgery preparation. (In those days, people were admitted the day before surgery.) I admitted Evelyn and did her skin prep, which included shaving and cleansing the area. In the process, she asked me what I thought of the lump. As soon as I touched it to examine it, I knew it was malignant. I had never been more sure of anything. Oh, I didn t mean to put you on the spot, she said. I hesitated, and slowly replied, It doesn t look good to me, but as you know, we won t know until after the biopsy. And just as I had known, it was malignant, and a radical mastectomy was performed, as was the procedure at that time. Evelyn s recollection as printed in her article is as follows: What a horrible question to ask her! I mean, it really put her on the spot. But Simone, bless her, came through. She hesitated a second and then responded. In that moment she helped me more than anyone else, more than all the good wishes and prayers. Because here, at last, was someone who would let me talk about it who wasn t trying to hush me up. 1 Years of radiation and chemotherapy followed. In the meantime, we would periodically visit and talk about the experience. Evelyn thanked me for being so honest that day, and she proceeded to live her life for several more years and complete it with dignity, grace and humor. When she passed, I attended her funeral and realized how much she had taught me about the dying process. Her funeral was a magnificent, yet sad, event. I walked away inspired by her life. Simone and husband Richard

9 When I opened the book and saw Evelyn, all time and space dissolved, and I had a knowing that Evelyn had come to tell me that my father was going to die. I closed the book, and of course, have kept it all these many years. As I came back to myself, I realized what I needed to do to say goodbye to my father. I went to the hospital the next day, still wanting to hold onto my denial, but as difficult as it was, I could no longer do so. I was able to be more present to him, and massaging his feet, I told him I loved him. He replied, I love you, too words we had not frequently shared. Two days later, he passed to his next journey. In my sadness, I had deep gratitude to Evelyn for bringing me the message that allowed me to bring closure and acceptance of my father s soul decision. I shared my experience with my friends, who just quietly nodded at hearing my story of such coincidence. I, of course, had no understanding of how such an event could occur, but the inner experience had been a profound teacher. How and why did this book, providing such an awesome personal experience, arrive on my doorstep at this particular time several years after Evelyn s passing? Intuitively, I knew the why, but I could not begin to understand the how. Synchronicity Defined The concept of synchronicity describes a meaningful coincidence of two or more events, where something other than probability of chance is involved. It was Carl Jung who first used the term after many years of making observations of such events. He stated synchronicity consists of two factors: a) an unconscious image comes into consciousness (subjective) either directly or indirectly; and b) an objective situation coincides with the content. 2 In my own (subjective) experience, the unconscious became the conscious intuitive knowing that my father was going to die, and the book was quite literally the direct (objective) delivery of the message. Other experiences, such as dreams and premonitions, are examples of indirect knowing. My father s heart attack and the dying process, along with the arrival of the book, are examples of objective events. The principle of synchronicity asserts that the synchronistic event included simultaneity and meaning. 3 Certainly, both were present in this case. Jung knew physicists Einstein and Pauli, and had an understanding of a unified field, and that time/space were no longer constant concepts. Jung also had knowledge of Eastern philosophies and so developed his theories upon blended knowledge of science and philosophy. Believing that we have an unconscious connection to this field (collective unconscious), Jung stated that coincidences mirror deep psychological processes and make them conscious. An archetype lying dormant in this unconscious is triggered, releasing an energy and the accompanying synchronistic event. The power release is literally a sense of the divine (as was my inner experience). Jung s fascination with Einstein s discovery of the power within the atom led him to consider the possibility of such power within the human psyche. 4 Explaining the How There is no explanation for synchronicity from the human/physical dualistic perspective. Therefore, Jung referred to it as an acausal principle acausal meaning without observable cause and effect. However, we now have a growing body of scientific information from a variety of disciplines that are contributing to a Unified Field Theory. McTaggart s interesting and valuable work, The Field, is a review of the works of scientists that reveal the interconnectedness of the universe. Something like a consciousness field exists, although we are still not completely aware of how it works. We do know that our intention and emotional state can be conveyed as information that affects another system beyond ourselves. Information consciousness can exist without a physical component. It exists in the field or other realm, and can be accessed by crossing the veil. Altered states of consciousness can access this field of information. The ongoing consciousness research at Princeton University has prompted many scientists the world over to speculate on theories to help explain the obvious and statistically significant data that has been collected. 5 As Ken Wilbur states, our three-dimensional world is a flatland, and what we have to work with at the present are flatland tools. Someday we may have the necessary tools that can support the existence of the field. And, somewhere in the field, synchronicities occur. One realm affects the other and results in the interplay of the physical and nonphysical. Space/time as we experience it on this planet does not exist in the other realms. This is well known by physicists. The Trickster The archetype most closely associated with synchronicity is the Trickster as manifested by the Greek god Hermes. The myth is that Hermes is the bringer of luck good and bad, guide of souls to the underworld, and messenger to the gods. He is master of boundaries and transitions. It is through this mastery that he surprises mundane reality with the unexpected and the miraculous. 6 It is uncanny that the most significant synchronicities happened to me at major transitions in my life, substantiating this Trickster energy for me. 9 continued on page 15

10 Pleasure continued from cover Feel the pleasure in movement. Feel the pleasure of the articulation of your joints. Look inside, feel, hear, know, perceive. That s you in there! Notice how bright and full of life you are in there! Nothing in your body is ever still, even when you are lying down or asleep. How pleasurable it is to move. Every time you take a step there is percussion. You initiate more fluid movement every time you eat or drink, with every breath you take. Do not hold yourself rigid in this movement. Let it flow in pleasure. Breathe in the breath of life from the universe filled with energy and consciousness. It goes throughout all systems of your body. Pleasure is each breath you take. Your brain isn t still either. Look at all of the action in your brain! Feel it, see it, hear it, know it. Know the pleasure of one moment of conscious awareness! Your bodies are full of light, full of love. The body functions on love and pleasure. What is your pleasure? What is your body's pleasure? What does your body love to do? Where does your body love to be? How does your body love to respond to your loved one? Feel this pleasure throughout every cell, the pulsation, the sound of life. You are crystalline beings of light with many facets and colors who have drawn up your body from mother earth. Your physical body runs on pleasure. Health is pleasure. Pleasure flows on the creative force of love. It is every cell s pleasure to be alive. It is every cell s pleasure to exchange with others. It is every organ s pleasure to create and to do its purpose. Dear ones, allow pleasure, invite pleasure in. When I first heard of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing I was a counselor in a community mental health center working with people afflicted by schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. But going there was the best decision I ever made. BBSH was a kind of a wonderland for me. Since it is taught at BBSH that each client determines the course of action in healing, no specialty is better than another. Individuals develop distinctive styles and abilities, and over time, there has been a language change from alternative to complementary medicine, showing the progress made forward in the goal to offer each client the healing modality that serves them best. The Harry Potter series is the life and times of a young wizard who realizes his destiny attending a school of wizardry. In the simplest terms, the tale is one of growing up and becoming a powerful, wise and proficient wizard. This process is a universal human theme of maturation. As with all organic processes, we need time to ripen, but we must never forget that we have within us the seed of new life to begin again, and again, and again. At the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, we learn to appreciate the multidimensional layers of what we call the Life Pulse. An individual life, in all its aspects, is the living example of this multidimensional reality. The use of fantasy and magic in a child s life, and even in the life of an adult, can be as simple as a daydream. When do we, or should we ever, stop believing in magic? As healers we hold ourselves, and our clients, in Unconditional Love where the Intention of a client is made clear and the Beliefs and Images are the only wall between where they are and where they want to be. Conclusion Time is a flexible medium in healing. Reality isn t quite the firm foundation we have held it to be. Belief is a cornerstone that allows probable realities to emerge to the benefit of the client in the healing process. Alternative medicine is benefiting by a renaissance of our world view. As our societal consensus of reality shifts, so too does our acceptance of what is or isn t possible. Ask and it is given. It s magic every day everyday magic. Witch, wizard, healer, or muggle in the realm of the Sacred Human Heart, all things are possible. In literature circles, there is a debate as to whether the Harry Potter series qualifies as an epic tale, and I ll leave that final decision to them. But as each and every one of us lives our personal stories, we can at various levels easily relate to the trials and tribulations, successes, and rewards of the young hero. How do we choose to live our lives? The answer to that question is at the core of Harry s magical life and our own. Every magical moment, every magical day. Since January of Last Year Dr. Barbara Brennan has been writing a bimonthly column for select publications throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. 15 Synchronicity as Spiritual Guidance continued from page 9 Hara and Positive Intention Barbara Brennan s four-dimensional model of humankind offers a wonderful way into understanding how to apply intention to our lives. Hara is a deeper dimension, beyond the physical and auric dimensions. Hara holds our intention for this life s incarnation. 7 The gradual process of strengthening Hara along with awakening through psych-spiritual development skills guide the student to the nonphysical experience of Hara/Intention. It is possible to set positive intention each day to observe how synchronicities are working in one s life. Some events will be minor, others life changing. In April of 2002, my husband Terry transitioned," unexpectedly and quickly, from a heart attack. From the moment I found him, and in spite of my deep shock, I was aware of what was happening. I aligned with the Divine and I also knew that Terry s soul had made his choice. I proceeded to live my path from the place of deep grief and knowing, never giving up my faith and the teachings I had received and been living at BBSH, and especially as a teacher in Year 4 where Hara and Core Star are the focus. How grateful I was to have embodied the teachings at this time of great challenge. I can almost remember the day my grief began to lift. It was in August of 2003 when I began to consider the possibility of being happy again. Being a double Libra, I love being in partnership. I set my intention and turned it over to God and Match.com! As I frequently did at the time, I spoke with Terry and asked him to help find someone for me. He knew what I needed and I didn t want it to be difficult. Those were my requests. The first man I met was widowed three months before me. As I investigated the possibilities, I felt a growing interest and love developing. But as Richard and I were dating, I was uncertain; it felt a little too fast. So again, I set my intention and asked Terry to send a sign. On the exact day of the second anniversary of Terry s passing, I received an envelope in the mail addressed to Richard Duniho. Now, my current husband is Richard Menoche and my celestial husband is Terence Duniho. So the name on the envelope was an amalgam of the two! In awe and almost disbelief at what I was seeing, I said, Thank you, Terry." In the envelope was a flyer advertising an Irish Tenor performance. The evening before receiving this, I had been reminiscing about our trip to Ireland taken very shortly before Terry died. It had been his dream to go to Ireland and he kept a very detailed journal of the trip. Reading the journal had brought the trip to life again. (How interesting that the Trickster had come to me through the mail.) This time, I could accept the perfect divinity of it all. I trusted the guidance it brought and I understood that Richard was the right one. We were married January 31st, a year to the day that we met. We are still in awe of the miracle of our connection. And we know there will be more lessons in our life plan together. Synchronicity cannot be predicted, but we can set intention to be aware of how it can manifest in our lives. Invite the Trickster and expect the unexpected. Whether good or bad, it can be an opportunity for guidance, moving us to greater awareness and healing the separation of duality. At the same time, it is most important to be grounded and discerning in your interpretation of the event. Summary: Characteristics of Synchronistic Events Unexpected and not time/space dependent Involve two or more events that occur simultaneously and ignite meaning Personal events, and when significant, can bring intuitive knowing, thus promoting spiritual growth Can reflect a deep, broad holistic reality you get a bigger picture Abound at times of life transitions Meditation tends to promote activity of archetypes, which in turn lies at the root of synchronicity Strengthening hara strengthens intention and grounding When intention is in alignment with our Divine plan, we co-create into physical manifestation. We are co-creators of synchronistic events that then reflect mirror back to us making conscious the unconscious.
