lesson two: son of man Main Point: Jesus, the Son of Man, identifies with those He came to save because He became a man. Bible Verse: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10 Bible Story: Zacchaeus, Luke 19:1-10 Something to think about before teaching: When Jesus came to earth as a baby, born in Bethlehem, he acquired a human nature. Although He remained God, He also became man. The Old Testament, with Daniel 7:13 being the most important passage, suggests the name the Son of Man refers to a messianic figure. Wanting to identify with those He came to save, He called himself Son of Man. As He was the one who usually used the name (only a few other instances are in the New Testament where someone else calls him this name), it shows the importance He placed on it. Over eighty places are recorded in Scripture where Jesus called himself this name. Kids will learn that Jesus sought to identify with those who He came to rescue from sin by becoming a man. 2 Preparation guess the sculpture PP Last week we learned that sculptures can be made out of many different materials. We looked at some sculptures made out of sand. I am going to show you a few pictures of sculptures. Let s see if we can guess what the sculpture is made of. PP What do you think these sculptures were carved out of? (Give kids an opportunity to guess.) They were carved out of ice. It is amazing to see what people can carve out of ice. Maybe you have been at a buffet where they had an ice sculpture. Or perhaps a winter carnival where there were ice sculptures. Sometimes at these type of carnivals they have a large castle made out of ice. There is actually a hotel made out of ice. Can you imagine spending the night in a hotel like that? What happens to ice sculptures when they get warm? They change form. They become liquid instead of solid ice. What the sculpture is made of is still water. Whether a beautiful ice sculpture or a puddle of water, the substance of it stays the same. Francois and Frank PP Supplies: Play dough or clay, wooden stool, cell phone Preparation: Place the clay on the stool. Francois is molding the play dough or clay into the shape of a person. He moves around it critiquing each view. Francois: I do wish that Frank would show up. I just cannot seem to get this man sculpted correctly. (Continues on in frustration. Gets an idea and pulls out his cell phone texting someone. Places the cell phone back and looks pleased.) Frank runs into the studio out of breath. 2

Frank: Francois, Francois? Where are you? Here I am to the rescue. Francois: Frank, you came so quick. I just texted you. Frank: I was next door delivering lumber. Francois: Beautiful! This could not have worked out any better. Now, if you will just stand right there. Frank: You said there was an emergency! Where is the emergency? Someone bleeding? A water main break? A theft? Francois: Ah, yes, the emergency. You see I am working on this sculpture and I cannot seem to get it right. Frank: First, that is not an emergency. Second, what does this have to do with me? Francois: It is an emergency! Of great magnitude. This sculpture must be completed by tomorrow. Now, stand here. (Positions Frank in awkward and comic poses, changing every few moments until Frank is frustrated.) Frank: That is enough! I am going back to work. Do not text me with emergencies that are not emergencies. Francois: But I need a model. I must see a man to be able to sculpt a man. I must see how he stands and acts and... Frank: Francois, just look in a mirror. (He turns and leaves.) Francois: A mirror? Hm. Perhaps this tree farmer is onto something. Now where to find a mirror... sculpt it! PP Supplies: Clay or playdough (or other materials as indicated in the Introduction), Stick figure man and Son of Man sign (optional display) Note: Stick figure man can be made from pipe cleaners. Divide the kids into two teams. Choose two kids to be the sculptors. Give each one the symbol to sculpt. Have them create a sculpture in front of the their team. The first team to guess what is sculpted wins. Symbol to sculpt: stick figure man 3

Our name of Jesus today is Son of Man. What do you think that name means? Some last names today come from a long time ago when people might call you Son of (name of your father.) For instance if you father s name was John, you might be called Son of John. Later that name became Johnson. (Use a few of the kids as examples for names.) Jesus name, Son of Man, means something a bit different than this. It means that He has the nature of man. While still being God, He is also man. Jesus used this name for himself more than any other name. It must have been important to Jesus that people knew that He understood what it was like to be a person. Jesus, the Son of Man, identifies with those He came to save because He became a man. Options: Display: Place a stick man and Son of Man sign in the display. No Power Point: If you do not have access to power point, put the stick man in a box and have the kids guess what might be in the box giving clues. forming the verse PP PP Read Luke 19:10 together: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10 Let s say the verse again with some motions to help us remember it. For the Son of Man (Point to sky and then walk fingers over hand.) Came to seek (Put hands on side of eyes and look back and forth.) And to save (Act like pulling on a rope as to pull someone to safety.) The lost. (Put hand over eyes.) 4

the work bible story PP Zacchaeus Luke 19:1-10 Supplies: Small action figure Preparation: Hide the action figure in the room. We are going to take a few moments to find something that is lost. It is a man. I am going to give you one minute to see if you can find him. (If you have a large group, assign a few kids to look while the others shout ideas on where to look to them.) Our Bible verse today says, The Son of man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10 Jesus, the Son of man, did not come to seek and save animals or objects. He came for you. The person next to you. The person in front of you or behind you. Your family. Your neighbors. He came for people. Let s read a story in Luke 19:1-10 about a man that Jesus sought out: Jesus was entering Jericho, a place on a trade route. There would have been a lot of people traveling here and for the tax collectors a lot of taxes to collect. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. Whenever the word, behold, is used in Scripture it means we had better pay attention. Something important is about to happen. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. Remember that there would have been a lot of taxes collected in this place which helped to make Zacchaeus a rich man. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. Have you ever been someplace where there is a crowd and you could not see over the people? For instance, a parade. Maybe you tried to jump up and down to see over people s heads. Were you successful in trying to see over their heads? Did someone help you? So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. Sycamore trees grew by the road side. They were easy to climb as they were low to the ground and had branches were strong and low. 5

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today. So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. By Jesus going to Zacchaeus house, it showed that Jesus accepted him. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner. And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold. He was telling Jesus that he would give half of what he had to the poor plus if he had stolen from anyone or cheated them out of money by taking too much taxes not only would he give them the money back but give them four times the money. That means if he owed someone $10, then he would give them $40. And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Jesus showed by his actions that He came to seek and to save the lost. He sought Zacchaeus out in the tree, went to his home, accepted him and saved him. Jesus was a man just like Zacchaeus in that He ate with him, drank with him, rested with him and possibly even laughed with him. He walked with men. He was also from God so He could forgive sin. Let s not forget that Jesus, the Son of Man, identifies with those He came to save because He had a complete human nature. He was a man at the same time He was God. The lost are those who do not know Jesus. Those who have not believed in Him and turned from their sin. If you do not know Jesus today, you can make the choice to believe in him. You can tell Him you are sorry for your sin and He will forgive you. He came for you, too. Prayer PP Give the children an opportunity to pray to receive Jesus as their Savior. Thank Him for coming to earth as a man and as God to seek those who are lost and to save them. Famous Artist: rembrandt PP In 1606, Rembrandt was born in Holland. He was an important artist who is famous for his paintings and drawings. One of the things Rembrandt liked to do was practice by making drawings of himself. He would stand in front of a mirror and draw what he saw. He liked to make faces at himself especially crazy expressions and draw them. 6

Turn to someone next to you. I am going to call out an expression and you make this face to the other person: Completely shocked Silently angry Over the top furious Horribly scared Wildly happy PP This is a picture of a self-portrait that Rembrandt made of himself. Rembrandt used himself as a model for his paintings. By looking at himself and knowing the feelings he was betraying, he could paint better. Sculptors also need models to look at while sculpting a person. They need to see how muscles look, how parts of the body are attached and the expressions on people s faces. The expressions that we show on our faces are ones that Jesus understands. Because He was a man here on earth, He identifies with us when we are shocked, angry, sad or happy. Jesus not only knows how we feel, but He also cares. Jesus does more than just care about how we feel. He takes action. He comforts us when we are hurt. He helps us to be brave when we are scared. He gives us peace when we are confused. Most importantly, Jesus came to seek us. This goes beyond just feelings. He knew that we needed a Savior. Someone to save us from our sins. So He became a man, lived in our world as a man and died on the cross for our sins. Remember, our Bible verse today, For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10 extreme art: the face PP Supplies: Facial expressions page Preparation: Print out the facial expressions page. Cut out the words into individual cards. 7

Divide the kids into groups to work on this art project together. Give each group a word. Street artists use materials they find on the street to make art. For instance, some will make sculptures out of buildings, trash or other materials left on the street. PP Let s look at some examples of faces made by street artists: Using materials you find around the room, make a face showing the expression I gave your group. (You will want to set some boundaries depending on your area. What can the kids write on/color on/move/ cut, etc. You may wish to plant materials that will work well for street sculptors in your meeting area. Some ideas: cardboard boxes, scraps of paper, cereal boxes, newspaper, chairs.) After each group is finished, have the groups look at each other s sculptures and try to guess the expression each one tried to create. Remember that Jesus, the Son of Man, identifies with those He came to save because He became a man. Many of the same expressions that you made today, Jesus had on His face at one time. But, also remember, that even when He was a man, He was still fully God. What difference did Jesus have as a man from us? One, like we just said, He was also divine (meaning He was God.) The other is that He never sinned. He was tempted, however, He never gave into the temptation. 8

the display art studio: face sculptures Supplies: Random items: clay or playdough, nuts and bolts, popsicle sticks, yarn, pompoms, scrap fabric, small boxes, mirrors Preparation: Place mirrors where kids can look at their faces before sculpting. Other possibility: use laptop computers to take their picture and then print it off to look at while they sculpt. Have the kids construct a sculpture of their own face using the items available. Encourage them to use different kinds of supplies in their sculpture. Review the meaning of the name Son of Man. Why did Jesus come to earth as a man? Game: search and rescue Supplies: Five different types of yarn Preparation: Cut a piece of yarn for each child a bit larger than their wrist. Cut one extra of each of the five colors. Have one person without yarn. This person is it. Their job is to tag as many kids as possible. If tagged, the person must sit down. Secretly give out the yarn to each child. Have them tie it around their wrists (they may need to tie it on for each other but do it so as few people see the color as possible.) Choose one person from each color to be the rescuer for that color. Tie the extra piece of yarn on their other wrist. When the game begins, the rescuers try to find the kids with the same color yarn. If they tag them, the kids are safe and go sit along a wall. After all kids are tagged, the team with the most safe wins. For younger kids, use only 2-3 colors of yarn to make it less chaotic. Review what it means that Jesus came to seek and save the lost. 9

bible memory activity: what doesn t belong? Supplies: Copy of bible verse page, yarn or ribbon Preparation: Cut out the words to the Bible verse. Roll up each word and tie with yarn. Hide them in the room. Have the kids hunt for the rolled up words. Work together to put the verse together once the words have been found. Express Yourself Supplies: Copy of questions for each small group 1. Jesus is called both the Son of God and the Son of Man. Why is He called both these names? 2. What kinds of things did Jesus experience as man? Did He ever sin? 3. How would you explain to someone what it means that Jesus is the Son of Man? 4. How does Jesus seek those who are lost? What does it mean to be lost? 5. How does Jesus save those who are lost? 6. What can you do to tell those who are lost about Jesus? Do you think that followers of Jesus should seek those who are lost like Jesus did? Why or why not? Snack: stick man Supplies: round crackers or cookies, stick pretzels, chow mein noodles, chocolate chips, M & M s, plates Make a stick man out of the ingredients. Encourage the children to be creative as they make faces on the stick man. Review what the name, Son of Man, means. Gallery Cards Supplies: printed card for each child, markers or crayons (optional) Name: Son of Man Symbol: Stick man Verse: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10 Give each child the card. If using the coloring cards, use markers or crayons to decorate them. Go over the verse together and review the symbol
