Twenty-Sixth Sunday in 2 September 30, 2018 A MESSAGE FROM FR JOSEPH Dear Friends, In this Sunday s Gospel reading, we hear John report to Jesus, Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us Jesus replied to John saying, Do not prevent him For whoever is not against us is for us Jealousy, rivalry, discrimination, is part of our human nature We see it exist in every community, even in our homes However, as Jesus followers, we are called to have an open heart and mind for our neighbors because, after all, we all are children of God We are also asked to respect the calls and gifts each of us has received from the Lord No single member - hand, foot, eye - can presume to get along without the others As members of the Body of Christ we are called to work together for the healthiness of Christ s Body How can I see and respect others gifts and calls? There are many ways that may help us to see and savor the goodness of God and the presence of the Spirit around us through others This week I would like to recommend to you an effective way, I believe, to deepen the knowledge of our Catholic faith When our faith is deepening, we will appreciate, respect, and live out our faith better, and respect the ways God is working in others I would suggest you take part in the reflection on The Joy of the Gospel recommended by our Bishop Zinkula Our parish has begun doing it You can call the parish office for more information In addition, I strongly suggest you take advantage of what Formedorg provides us This site has been purchased by our parish for every member to use free Just go to the website Formedorg and register with the code: RAXJWJ You will see and enjoy a great deal of good materials there including good homilies and presentations on all aspects of Catholic Christianity, great CDs and DVDs, etc I hope that you ll take advantage of this service In the Lord s Peace and Joy DAILY/FUNERAL MASSES Currently, when a funeral Mass is scheduled, the parish cancels the daily Mass and asks those who would normally attend the daily Mass, to attend the funeral Mass as one of the Corporal Works of Mercy, to bury the dead This will continue, unless, the funeral is scheduled for the afternoon From now on, when a funeral Mass is scheduled in the afternoon, the regular 8:00 am daily Mass will still be celebrated While the need to perform Corporal Works of Mercy doesn t change, we do realize that parishioners often try to keep their mornings free so they can attend Mass Monday evenings will stay the same, even if there is a funeral LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE Due to construction at Ss Mary and Joseph Church, and many parishioners going to the Christ Our Life conference in Des Moines, the parish library open house has been postponed SPARKING THE SPIRIT Why God? Why Christian? Why Catholic? Explore the reasons behind our faith in God, Christianity, and Catholicism The presentation combines both Christian and Catholic apologetics with evidence from science, philosophy, and archeology Please join the Keokuk Deanery for this engaging presentation by Anthony Digmann Anthony Digmann is a fantastic and powerful speaker who engages audiences of all ages The presentation will be on Wednesday, October 17th at McAleer Hall Doors open at 5:30 pm, with the presentation beginning at 6:30 pm All ages are welcome ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL Please prayerfully consider your pledge to the Annual Diocesan Appeal Our parish goal is $71,284 If you did not make a commitment last weekend, please return your pledge form to the parish office as soon as possible Your support and prayers are greatly appreciated
