September 16, 2018 HOLY FAMILY PARISH HOLY FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT To celebrate, live, nurture and pass on the Catholic faith ST JOSEPH CHURCH Fort Madison, IA 52627 Montrose, IA 52639 Sacred Heart Ss Mary and Joseph 508 Cedar Street 2217 Avenue I 410 11th Street The word "catechesis" means "to echo" Literally, we are to echo the good news of Jesus Christ to the world This is not a suggestion; it is a command of our Lord Some people are called and set apart in our communities as catechists, those formally trained and charged with passing on the Gospel to children and adults, inside and outside of our communities On Catechetical Sunday, we acknowledge them and remind ourselves of the need for formation and growth in all of us To be a catechist is a privileged calling, and today be sure to say "thank you" to one in your community However, it would be wrong on this day to only look to those bearing the NAME of catechist for an echoing of good news ALL of us are called to echo and share the Gospel message Parents are the first and primary catechists in a child's life We also are important catechists in the lives of our coworkers, our spouses, our relatives, and our friends Some say catechesis begins in the home, and while that is true, it carries with it a parent/child connotation Where does catechesis really begin? It begins in the HEART This year on Catechetical Sunday, may your heart be moved to motivate you to share with others the good news of Jesus Christ

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 September 16, 2018 A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOSEPH Dear Friends, This Sunday s Gospel invites us to look at Peter s life and see what kind of Peter we are as we try to live our call to be disciples of the Lord One time Peter walked on water towards Jesus As he lost his focus, he began to drown In today s Gospel, Peter tried to stop the Lord from accomplishing the will of the Father, thus aligning himself with the devil That is why Jesus called him Satan Then, Peter publically denied Christ three times Yet, Peter allowed his life to be changed by Christ He had changed and dedicated his life to the Lord to proclaim the Good News to the ends of the world In Rome, Peter was condemned to be crucified Tradition tells us that when he was brought to the place of crucifixion, where the Basilica of St Peter stands now, he asked to be crucified head down because he did not deserve to be crucified like his Lord It is true that Peter had been weak He had failed Weakness and failure have been part of the reality of our Church, from the beginning to the present time This includes the weakness and failure among her ordained leaders and laity However, they are not the final word Love is Love is the most living thing of all because Love is of God With that in mind, I would like to invite you to think about joining Christ Our Life conference, taking place in Des Moines on September 29 & 30 See next column for more info Secondly, let us join the Vision 20/20: From Pentecost to Pentecost led by the Diocese of Davenport To prepare for the Vision, we are invited to join the reflection on The Joy of the Gospel, the first apostolic exhortation written by Pope Francis The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus For more info on the reflection, check the bulletin We are called upon to follow Christ, to embrace our faith, to share our faith, and, when it is needed, to suffer for our faith When we keep our eyes focused on the Lord, we can walk on water or live an authentic Catholic life as Peter did Trust in God for He will give us the gift of faith so that we might choose God and have life, the eternal life Peace and Joy in the Lord CHRIST OUR LIFE LAST CHANCE!! If you attend the Christ Our Life conference, you ll have the opportunity to hear world-class speakers, celebrate Mass among many thousands, attend Reconciliation, visit Jesus in Adoration, fill your spirit with music and feel your soul rejoice! There will also be a wide selection of vendors selling all things Catholic The conference is scheduled for Saturday, September 29th, and Sunday, September 30th, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Doors open both days at 7:00 am Tickets are $15 for students and $25 for adults, for the entire weekend They are available at the parish office or through Donna Gengenbacher, 372-1318 You don t want to miss this great opportunity!
