Please stand if you are able. WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY October 1, 2017 Ou r Mission: Gro wing in Sp irit Living as D isciple s Se rving God s World Preparation for Worship Golden breaks the dawn; comes the eastern sun like a rider strong, set the course to run. Birds above me fly; flowers bloom below, through the earth and sky, God s great mercies flow. Holy, living God, keep me safe today; though I weary plod, make me kind, I pray. Let me guide our youth, honor weak and old; let me serve with truth, and God s love unfold. Give me daily bread, while I do my part, bright skies overhead, gladness in my heart. Simple wants provide; evil let me shun, Jesus at my side, till the day is done. Tzu Chen Chao, 1931 We Gather in God s Name Prelude Choral No. 3 For Organ in A Minor Franck Ray Freeman, Organist
Welcome and Announcements Passing of the Peace Leader: The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Praise Song You Never Let Go Praise Band Call to Worship One: With what shall we come before the Holy One, and bow ourselves before God on High? God has shown us what is good. All: What does the Holy One require of us, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God? Hymn #686 God of Our Life Prayer of Confession Almighty God, mother of mercy, father of grace: You have called us to one table, but we have pursued our own course. You have promised us the abundance of all creation, but in our greed, and in our envy, the world goes without. You have promised us the bread of life itself, but in our pride, and in our arrogance, the world goes hungry. You have promised us the waters of peace and justice, but in our violence, and in our discord, the world goes thirsty. And now we are famished, too, Lord. Have mercy on us. Forgive us, again. Transform us, at this table, and for this table, and send us from this table as servants of your righteousness, by the power of your Son, our Lord. Amen. Assurance of Forgiveness One: Even when our cups run dry, God s grace overflows. All: Even when our plates are empty, God s generosity overflows. One: And even when our hearts feel barren, God s love overflows. Friends, you have been called and claimed by the God of all things, and by the abundance of God s grace, and, by the power of God s love, your sins have been forgiven. Amen. We Proclaim God s Word Anthem I Will Sing with the Spirit Chancel Choir Children s Message Hymn #314 Children ages 3 & 4 are invited to Play n Worship in Room 13. Scripture Lesson Matthew 5:38-48 Pastor: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Star Trek, Jiu-Jitsu, and Jesus Rev. Dr. Ben Trawick Sharing Our Tithes and Offerings We Respond to God s Word Offertory Where You Are Praise Band Response #609 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Prayer of Dedication A Litany of Preparation (from A Wee Worship Book...By Permission) Kent Ford Lord God, because Jesus has taught us to trust you in all things, we hold to his word and share his plea: Your kingdom come, your will be done. Where nations budget for war while Christ says, Put [away] your sword : Your kingdom come, your will be done. Where countries waste food and covet fashion while Christ says I was hungry...i was thirsty : Your kingdom come, your will be done. Where powerful governments claim their policies are heaven blessed while Scripture states that God helps the powerless: Your kingdom come, your will be done. Where Christians seek the kingdom in the shape of their own church as if Christ came to build and not to break barriers: Your kingdom come, your will be done. Where our prayers falter, our faith weakens, our light grows dim: Your kingdom come, your will be done. Where Jesus Christ calls us: Your kingdom come, your will be done. Lord God, you have declared that your kingdom is among us. Open our ears to hear it, our hands to serve it, our hearts to hold it. This we pray in Jesus name. Amen. Invitation to the Table 3

Pick up the Tent of Nations flyer at The Station to learn more. Season of Peace coloring sheets are available for you to take with you at the entrance to the sanctuary. MMEPJ - What You Can Do To Support the Search for Peace. Last Sunday, we presented information to members about the current situation in Palestine, what position our denomination has taken on Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions, and what steps people can take to make a difference in the suffering. Today, members of MMEPJ will be in Wester Hall following worship with materials explaining the steps people can take, including a reading list and products to boycott. Please stop by our display and check out these materials. Advent Editor - Your skills are needed! To make the Advent Devotional a gift to Grace, we first need an editor. If you are creative and have editorial skills, and would like to bring this project to life, please let us know in the office. This can be a work-at-home project done on your own time. Finance Update - Offerings continued to trail budget projections in August by $39,300 compared to last year s $17,000. Due to delayed spending, we are keeping things in balance. However, without improved Offering Income, we may have to curtail some planned spending. If you are behind in your planned giving or had intended to wait until later, please consider our current financial situation. Thanks.
