FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora On this Second Sunday of Easter, we also celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. The devotion to the Divine Mercy was started by Saint Sister Faustina from Poland. Jesus, the Divine Mercy, had a revelation to Sr. Faustina and in her diary she wrote that the greatest attribute of God is His mercy. Some learned men got a hold of it and said No, no, all God s attributes are infinite, so her diary can t be accepted. For almost 20 years, the devotion was not allowed to be spread. A Cardinal from Poland initiated that her diary be looked at once again. Six months after her diary was approved, this same Cardinal became Pope John Paul II. Indeed God is merciful to us and we are called to be merciful too. One of our parishioners saw that the Blessed Tabernacle of our chapel had badly been discolored by time and needed polishing. She offered to pay for the expense that might incur to reveal its brassy shine. Another parishioner saw the grass at our One Body Statue needed constant watering, so she offered to pay for the sprinkling system. These are just few examples of our fine parishioners who are generous and at the same time merciful too. HN parishioners have responded well to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal and the 1% club is also gaining huge support. So far our efforts have been successful, but mostly because you are generous and merciful. Mother Teresa attended a gathering with kings and presidents and statesmen from all over the world. They were there in their crowns and jewels and silks and Mother Teresa wore her sari held together by a safety pin. One of the noblemen spoke to her of her work with the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. He asked her if she didn t become discouraged because she saw so few successes in her ministry. Mother Teresa answered, No, I do not become discouraged. You see, God has not called me to a ministry of success. He has called me to a ministry of mercy. It reminds me to be thankful for the Sisters of Mercy who have served our parish for many years. Just like many congregations of Religious sisters, their numbers are diminishing and yet they continue to serve. Sr. Toni Lynn Gallagher comes to Holy Name every now and then to help us, especially with our Grief Ministry and Baptismal Preparation. During Holy Week I visited an elderly lady who is now in an assisted living section of a big building, and she said a Sister of Mercy comes to give them communion. Like love that doesn t stop even when you get old, mercy should also go with you. A priest was giving a lesson on the 23rd Psalm to a group of children. He noticed that Little Johnny seemed upset by the verse, Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. What s wrong, Johnny? the priest asked. Well, replied Little Johnny, I m not worried about goodness and mercy, but I m not sure I d like Shirley following me around all the time. SAVE THE DATE: JUNE 8, 2013 AAA 2013 1% CLUB MEMBERS THANK YOU DINNER More information will come in the mail. The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Ques on: Did the Apostles pass along wri en tradi on, oral tradi on or both? Answer from Dei Verbum: And so the apostolic preaching, which is expressed in a special way in the inspired books, was to be preserved by an unending succession of preachers un l the end of me. Therefore the Apostles, handing on what they themselves had received, warn the faithful to hold fast to the tradi ons which they have learned either by word of mouth or by le er (see 2 Thess. 2:15), and to fight in defense of the faith handed on once and for all (see Jude 1:3). Now what was handed on by the Apostles includes everything which contributes toward the holiness of life and increase in faith of the peoples of God; and so the Church, in her teaching, life and worship, perpetuates and hands on to all genera ons all that she herself is, all that she believes. Ques on: Which person of the Holy Trinity assists the Church with regards to the tradi ons passed down from the Apostles? Answer from Dei Verbum: This tradi on which comes from the Apostles develops in the Church with the help of the Holy Spirit. For there is a growth in the understanding of the realies and the words which have been handed down. This happens through the contempla on and study made by believers, who treasure these things in their hearts (see Luke, 2:19, 51) through a penetra ng understanding of the spiritual reali es which they experience, and through the preaching of those who have received through Episcopal succession the sure gi of truth. For as the centuries succeed one another, the Church constantly moves forward toward the fullness of divine truth un l the words of God reach their complete fulfillment in her. Editor s Note: Paul s advice to the Thessalonians regarding holding fast to the tradi ons they have learned from the Apostles either by word of mouth or by le er directly challenges a commonly-held Protestant belief that asserts that divinelyinspired truth comes only from the Bible alone (a.k.a. Sola Scriptura ). Second Thessalonians 2:15 is one of those important verses to keep in your hip pocket to pull out whenever one of our Protestant brothers or sisters tells you that divine revela on is only revealed through the Bible alone. Sola Scriptura (a.k.a. Bible alone ) is simply a false doctrine. Through the Church we have both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradi on as passed down by the Apostles and their successors. Both are valued, loved, cherished and as Dei Verbum states contributes toward the holiness of life. A BETTER USE OF YOUR TIME Learn to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you ll have no time for criticism of others. Anonymous

Thank you for sharing your tech savvy with us for so many hours. Thank you, of course, to our artists extraordinaire: Mrs. Babs Kleinhenz, Miss Nora Murphy, Mrs. Alcira Bermudez (Diego 5th grade) and Miss Yolanda Herrera. Your artistic creations were the highlight of the live auction with bids above and beyond our hopes. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Phan-Romero (Diego 4th grade & Dominic 3rd grade), who provided food and cocktails from the Slanted Door. I appreciate you for your generous contributions to this event, and thank your employees for making the evening so special. Our Master of Ceremonies and Auctioneer, David Valle-Schwenk (Benito 5tth grade & Lydia 1st grade), did a great job stirring up the audience during the live auction to get the best possible prices for our individual classroom art project. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are numerous people to be thanked after a huge, fundraising event like this. Please know that I'm grateful to so many of our parents. I thank each of you and, of course, Mrs. Liz Sharpe for her organization, dedication and enthusiasm in directing the 2013 auction, Hawaiian Paradise. Sincerely, HOLY NAME SCHOOL Mrs. Judy Cosmos, Principal CONCERT AT THE SHRINE The rector of the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, Fr. Gregory Coiro, invited the White Horse Chorale to give a reprise of a concert they presented in Assisi, Italy, in October, 2011 in honor of Pope Benedict's celebration of the 25th anniversary of the World Prayer for Peace. This concert was performed at the first chapel rebuilt by St. Francis of Assisi, San Damiano, and at Santa Maria Maggiore, also in Assisi, where some believe St. Francis began his ministry. The concert is free and all are welcome. It features all original music in honor of St. Francis. Please join us this Saturday, April 6, at 4:00 p.m. at the National Shrine, 610 Vallejo Street, in North Beach San Francisco. Before or after the concert, guests may want to make a special effort to visit the adjacent chapel, the Porziuncola Nuova, a near-exact replica of a chapel built by St. Francis in Italy. Our Porziuncola Nuova, here in North Beach, has been designated by Pope Benedict as one of the five major holy sites in the world, and the only one in America. If you have any questions please contact Terry Hogan Johnson at 925-212-7835. April 7, 2013 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (C) SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY (C) Acts 5:12 16 / Rv 1:9 11a, 12 13, 17 19 / Jn 20:19 31 One of the best things about Easter is the candy. Even more spectacular than the jelly beans are those crème-filled, fat-laden chocolate eggs. And some people (though not me) claim a love of marshmallow chicks and bunnies. I think we love this candy so much in part because it only comes around once a year. Its rarity makes it special. The same can be said about the apostle Thomas. He s the crème egg of the Bible his story comes around only on the second Sunday of Easter, and it s usually a favorite of Christians who take heart in believing without seeing. Thomas s rarity makes him special. But this story is about more than Thomas; it also reveals much about the risen Jesus. First, he can move through locked doors and walls to get to his beloved disciples; his love knows no boundaries. Second, even in his resurrected body, he still has wounds. He knows what it s like to be broken and hurt deeply. And third, he speaks and breathes peace. Not an easy, everything s-going-to-be-justdandy peace, but a hard-won peace that trusts in God despite suffering and fear. Jesus does the same for us today. The risen Jesus can move beyond the spiritual walls we ve built and the emotional doors of doubt we ve triple-locked. The risen Jesus can identify with our wounds and pain. The risen Jesus Promises us a deep, hard-won peace. And, fortunately, Jesus comes around much more often than Thomas or chocolate-covered crème eggs. The Risen Jesus is with us always. Do we believe?
