NERT is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco. Through this program, individuals will learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention. The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that will help individuals respond to a personal emergency as well as act as members of a neighborhood response team. The training instructors are professional firefighters. There is no cost for our neighborhood training classes. 3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora The big day has come! It s the 75 th Anniversary of our Holy Name School. We celebrated with a Thanksgiving Mass at 1:30PM and a gathering at the Gym, Flanagan Center and the School yard at 3PM. We welcome our alumni from different generations attending our weekend masses. There were graduates from the Class of 1943 to the Class of 2013 registered to attend. Siblings, cousins, neighbors and couples, all with a history at HN School, coming together to renew old acquaintances, visit with the Sisters of Mercy and the faculty members, staff, and each other, and make new memories. There was a Memorabilia display in the Flanagan Center, featuring photos of all the graduating classes, a display of sports trophies, school uniforms, and a variety of photographs from different decades. Food and beverages were served, there was a chance to walk through the school to see the many improvements and changes from yesteryear, and a photo spot to take class or group pictures. The different decades had designated seating areas, so each group could meet with their peers. The day before this big celebration at the school, our former school principal, Mrs. Noreen Murphy, also experienced her big day in two ways: on earth, as we paid our final tribute at a Funeral Mass presided by Fr. Ray Allender, with several priests concelebrating, and in heaven, as she enters our true home. Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, and is survived by her six children and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Murphy, who was our longest serving Principal at HN, led our school from 1985 until I remember shortly I after came to Holy Name, I blessed and dedicated the Noreen Murphy Technology Center at the school. She always remembered me during Christmas and some special events by sending cards and gifts. She was loved and admired by our school families, faculty and staff. She was our first lay Principal and her tenure also included the 50 th Anniversary of the School, celebrated in 1991, and the retirement of the remaining Sisters of Mercy. This is what I wrote in the School Tuesday Newsletter: On our side, we will be saying our goodbyes but on the other side, there is that big HELLO that awaits our beloved principal and a grand welcome by the primary PRINCIPAL of our life into the everlasting life in Heaven. Our life is spent well when we give life to others, like what Mrs. Murphy did. What matters most is not having more years in our life, but having more life in our years. LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES The message found in today s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured > SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR LOUISIANA This weekend, we will have a Special Collection for the flood victims in Louisiana. The recent storms in Louisiana may not have a name, but the names of those suffering in the wake of the worst flooding since Hurricane Katrina are our sisters and brothers. As a people of God, let us come to their aid. Catholics across the United States are asked to respond generously. Our prayer and material support is urgently needed to help rebuild lives. On September 24/25 there will be an emergency collection to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted Catholic dioceses in Louisiana. ACE COLLECTION Next Sunday s Second Collection is the ACE COLLECTION for the benefit of our Parish School. Your generosity is always appreciated by our school children. Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 and died in He founded the Franciscan Order and is the patron saint of San Francisco and of Italy. LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES continued immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don t notice their suffering. God s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA Welcomes New and Returning Catholics: We begin with the period of Inquiry or Precatechumenate. This is the time when individuals might first contact Holy Name of Jesus parish. Sessions are on Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30PM in the Pastoral Center. The RCIA catechists are Sr. Cristina and Terry Flaherty. They will be assisted by other resource presenters during the period of the Catechumenate. Please call Sr. Cristina at the pastoral center to register or you may just come on Wednesday evening. We pray that you will answer Jesus invitation to come follow Me. Social Concerns and Respect Life Ministry As the centerpiece of our parish s Pastoral Outreach, we will plan and organize involvement in these two important aspects of Christian life. We envision to network with the Archdiocese Social Justice, Interreligious and Ecumenical Dialogue, as well as Respect Life and environmental mercy initiatives. This will bring our social concerns to the level of advocacy and active participation. If you are interested to be part of this new ministry in our parish, please let Sr. Cristina know. Thank you. Sr. Cristina will be absent from the parish on Sept. 16 th to Oct. 2nd. She will attend a Canossian Sisters international conference in Jakarta, Indonesia. In Jewish life then as now, it was not the custom to name a child after a living parent; notice there are no juniors in the genealogy of Jesus. Remember also how the relatives complained to Zachary and Elizabeth that no one in their family was ever named John. Then there are the changed names, Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Saul became Paul, Simon became Peter. This spills over into Western culture in many ways, such as British royalty taking new names at coronation. It s anybody s guess, for example, whether the Prince of Wales intends to be King Charles II, or become Henry, or Edward, or George if he wishes. Members of religious orders have until recent years swapped baptismal names for new ones, and the latest pope made a switch as well. Secular life has many parallels, and movie stars like Cary Grant, Judy Garland, and John Wayne might not have shone so brightly as Archie Leach, Frances Gumm, and Marion Morrison. There are some compelling reasons in our tradition for taking a new name when undertaking a new mission, yet also a clear preference for choosing the right baptismal name from the start! Rev.
