3 HOLY NAME OF JESUS TREE OF LIFE PROJECT To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church s 85th Anniversary, a Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). We are confident that the funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for some of the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. The Holy Name Tree of Life was unveiled and blessed last Sunday at the October 10, 2010, at the 85th Anniversary Mass and Pastor s Installation presided by Most Rev. Robert McElroy. 4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Two days before my ordination to the priesthood, I was awakened by the loud voice of my aunt trying to wake up my grandmother, sleeping in the room next to mine. The loud voice turned into a loud cry. My grandmother was dead! Like any grandmother, she was special to me and to everybody. It was a week for both a Funeral and an Ordination! I also recollect an excerpt from Teresa s poem: Let nothing trouble you, let nothing frighten you Everything passes, God never changes Patience obtains all Whoever has God, wants for nothing God alone is enough! These are some of the messages I wanted to share during the Memorial Mass, but Linda s beautiful memories are already endless. Our hearts were already full of an unceasing flow of thanksgiving and praise. I was reminded of a story of an old man who had died. A wonderful funeral was in progress and the country preacher talked at length of the good traits of the deceased, what an honest man he was, and what a loving husband and kind father he was. Finally, the widow leaned over and whispered to one of her children, "Go up there and take a look in the coffin and see if that's your pa." At Ms. McCausland s memorial, there was no body to look at, only treasured memories, a life fully lived, and a special person who will never be forgotten Dear Parishioners of Holy Name, Time always goes fast when you are enjoying it and loving what you are doing. It was a beautiful experience to be a part of this wonderful parish community. No doubt you can easily fall in love with this parish family. I hope and pray that I can relive these precious moments at Holy Name again someday. That s why I don t want to say Goodbye, although I will be going back to the Philippines Monday, October 25. I will only say, Thank you very much and the best way I can express this is to offer my prayers for all you and to say God bless you. Fr. John Legitimas Sunday October 24, 2010 T H I RT I ETH SUNDAY I N ORDINARY T I M E What does God want from us? The Pharisee in Jesus parable was a leader in the synagogue. He was good at what he did. He was effective in the community because of his talents and because of the way he had developed them. And he knew to thank God for them. When he goes to pray, he brings his successes with him. But Jesus says the other man is justified, the one who wouldn t come so near the sinner who wanted mercy. What does God want from us? When we re scared, we might bargain with God: If you get me out of this, Lord, I promise I ll change! What do we barter with? Some deals involve changed behavior: If you let me out of this hospital bed, Lord, I m really going to exercise this time. Four times a week. No five times a week! And I ll eat differently too. But we hear in the Book of Sirach today that offering God a bribe isn t going to work. Why doesn t God want the deal we offer? Because God already has a better offer in place: to overcome our fear. What are we scared about? That s what we have to offer. Bring that to God. What does God want? Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously, according to your means. Actually, it can be small or large. It can be as simple as a quiet prayer in the back of the congregation. And it is as large as our whole life, built piece by piece out of each day we re given. What does God want from us? Honesty, simplicity, strength elements that are part of humility.
