3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora We have had too much sadness and bad news lately. The passing away of someone is always sad news. What makes it a bad news is how they died - untimely, violently, tragically or in a shocking way. We have had funeral after funeral in our church these past weeks and Holy Cross Cemetery was my frequent destination. After Matthew Downing s funeral last Monday, with over 700 attendees that packed the whole church, we had another funeral and burial last Friday for a long time parishioner, Rose Farren. But I always believe that sad and bad news are just a prelude for happy and good news. They are just in preparation for something beautiful that is to come. The month of May signals a new hope. The word may itself brings some encouragement and best wishes for the future. As the old Madrigal song says Now is the month of May-ing, when merry lads are playing. It signals some happy times. So, may you have a happy month of May. Our Altar Servers Society initiates that happiness this weekend with their 2nd pancake breakfast that they will be serving after the Sunday 7:30AM and 9:30AM masses. I said at the mass last week that the entrance for this breakfast is free - but you have to pay for your exit. It s like the story about an excited tourist who saw a camel for the first time. His excitement doubled when the man tending the camel said, Camel ride free. And up he went with glee. After a while, he wanted to alight from the camel, whereupon the man said, If you want to go down, there is a $5 fee. Of course, there is a minimal price for this breakfast that will surely benefit our Altar Servers Society. Our Altar servers include both boys and girls. Certainly, altar boys can foster a vocation to the priesthood. But we need altar girls also, who might be attracted to the religious life. That s what we prayed for last weekend, vocations to the priesthood and consecrated lives, to include nuns and religious sisters. I am not sure if Bishop John Wester was an altar server or not before he became a priest for our Archdiocese of San Francisco, later serving as our auxiliary bishop and then appointed as Bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah. He must have been, having graduated from Our Lady of Mercy. He will become the new Archbishop of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Bishop Wester is among the first bishops appointed as Archbishop by Pope Francis. Archbishopelect Wester s Mass of Installation is on June 4th at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. This is happy and good news for all! The reading lets us know that for all of our strength, wisdom and ability, we are only the branches. The reading also tells us that we are expected to bear fruit. In one brilliant image, Jesus tells us who he is, who we are and what we are expected to do. He even tells us that if we do not bear fruit, his Father, the gardener, will prune away every barren branch.

Thank you, Mrs. Rita Nolan, for preparing the 8th grade Confirmandi students to receive the sacrament of Confirmation on Friday evening. Thank you Sister Esther for overseeing so many aspects of the Mass and Mr. Tony Eiras for leading the 8 th grade students in song. Thank you, Mrs. Sharon Aymard and Mrs. Diane Preble, for preparing the students for the sacrament of Reconciliation, which they received in January and preparing them to receive their First Holy Communion or a special blessing this past Saturday. The ceremony was beautiful because of help from so many people including Sister Esther and Mr. Tony Eiras. Thank you, Bishop Wang and Father Arnold, for speaking to the students beforehand to prepare them for these special Sacraments of Initiation and for offering touching homilies during the services. Thank you to the second grade parents for setting up the gym for the celebration party on Monday, April 27. The gym was cleaned up and the red tarp put back in place before the 12:30 dismissal! Thank you so much. On Saturday, our Speech Team, under the direction of Mrs. Rita Nolan, was very successful at the St. Ignatius Speech Competition. Mrs. Nicole Haggerty will not be returning to Holy Name School for the school year. Mrs. Haggerty will be staying at home in Petaluma with her two young children.
