After the mass, I received a text message saying that there were originally 6 kings who journeyed to Bethlehem, but only 3 of them made it.

I just want to make sure I was not misunderstood in last week s column.

4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Last Sunday, I mentioned in my homily that we were celebrating the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord that day, and not the Feast of the Three Kings. The gospel did not mention about kings, only wise men, or the number of the wise men. We just presume that there were three because of the three precious gifts. After the mass, I received a text message saying that there were originally 6 kings who journeyed to Bethlehem, but only 3 of them made it. One went to the Philippines who became Tapa King, one to China who became Chow King and another went to the US and became Burger King. I just want to make sure I was not misunderstood in last week s column. The days of Christmas may end on Epiphany (January 6 th ) which is the 12 th day of Christmas, but it is not the end of the season of Christmas. So when does Christmas season end? The feast of the Epiphany is made solemn by adding an "octave" - an extension of the celebration for a week after the feast. With this the Christmas season still continues. At the end of the octave is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord and so this is the feast that brings the Christmas season to a close. So, this weekend then, which is the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord, is the end of our Christmas season. But the spirit of Christmas still goes on and should go on throughout the year. What is this spirit? Not so much of the gift-giving and the merrymaking, but that of goodness and kindness we share with one another and the experience of a Savior born in our hearts. I experienced that goodness last week from an employee at Noah Bagel's. I hurriedly pulled out some cash from my wallet to pay him and then headed back to my car which was parked across the street. As I looked in my rearview mirror I saw the guy running in my direction. I did not realize I had overpaid him. I was richer by $20 that day but more so, I became rich with honest people like that employee, blessed by such goodness and kindness. I am so proud to say that Holy Name is a rich parish rich with so many parish volunteers showing goodness and kindness, allowing us to celebrate Christmas every day. This Sunday, a reception in their honor will follow the 11:30AM mass in the Flanagan Center. Thanks to all our parish volunteers. We need YOU! Continued on the right. Can a person be baptized more than once? My fiancee was baptized in the Lutheran church. If she becomes Catholic, will she be baptized again? Rudy A person can be validly bap zed only once, whether in or out of the Catholic Church. Catholics believe three things are necessary for a valid bap sm: 1) bap zing in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; 2) flowing water; and 3) the inten on of the minister to bap ze using the form (words of the Trinitarian formula) and ma er (flowing water) needed for a valid bap sm. Orthodox and most Protestant bap sms are recognized by the Catholic Church. However, bap sms performed by Chris an communi es that don t believe in the Trinity Jehovah s Witnesses and Mormons, for example are not recognized by the Catholic Church as valid. These communi es may use the same ma er (flowing water), but they don t have the same form (Trinitarian formula) or inten on in their bap sm. If your fiancee decides to become Catholic, she will need to a end Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults classes, make her first Communion and reconcilia on, and be confirmed, but she has already been validly bap zed and will not need to be bap zed again. The airline was looking for volunteers to give up their seats. In exchange, they'd give you a $100 voucher for your next flight and a first class seat in the plane leaving an hour later. About eight people ran up to the counter to take advantage of the offer. About 15 seconds later all eight of those people sat down grumpily as the lady behind the ticket counter said, "If there is anyone else OTHER than the flight crew who'd like to volunteer, please step forward..."

Answer from Lumen Gentium: The laity have the right, as do all Christians, to receive in abundance from their spiritual shepherds the spiritual goods of the Church, especially the assistance of the word of God and of the sacraments. They should openly reveal to them their needs and desires with that freedom and confidence which is fitting for children of God and brothers in Christ. They are, by reason of the knowledge, competence or outstanding ability which they may enjoy, permitted and sometimes even obliged to express their opinion on those things which concern the good of the Church. When occasions arise, let this be done through the organs erected by the Church for this purpose. Let it always be done in truth, in courage and in prudence, with reverence and charity toward those who by reason of their sacred office represent the person of Christ. The laity should, as all Christians, promptly accept in Christian obedience decisions of their spiritual shepherds, since they are representatives of Christ as well as teachers and rulers in the Church. Let them follow the example of Christ, who by His obedience even unto death, opened to all men the blessed way of the liberty of the children of God. Nor should they omit to pray for those placed over them, for they keep watch as having to render an account of their souls, so that they may do this with joy and not with grief. Question: Does the Laity have the freedom to initiate and the obligation to perform good works? Answer from Lumen Gentium: Let the spiritual shepherds recognize and promote the dignity as well as the responsibility of the laity in the Church. Let them willingly employ their prudent advice. Let them confidently assign duties to them in the service of the Church, allowing them freedom and room for action. Further, let them encourage lay people so that they may undertake tasks on their own initiative. Attentively in Christ, let them consider with fatherly love the projects, suggestions and desires proposed by the laity. However, let the shepherds respectfully acknowledge that just freedom which belongs to everyone in this earthly city. Continued next column -> January 13, 2013 The Bap sm of the Lord How was your Christmas this year? It may seem like Christmas happened a long time ago, but the Church s celebration doesn t officially close until the feast we celebrate today, so it s an appropriate question. Were your family gatherings festive enough, the presents perfect enough, the midnight Mass moving enough? Our expectations shape our experiences and how we feel about them. Did this year s Christmas live up to yours? Or did it just leave you with a lot of bills to pay? In today s Gospel reading, Saint Luke tells us that those awaiting the Messiah were filled with expectation. The Jewish people in Jesus day expected a Messiah who was a fighter someone who would lead the revolt against the Roman occupying force and overturn the unjust status quo. They expected a political leader or a revolutionary, yet in today s first reading the prophet Isaiah says that God s servant would not be violent he would bring about justice and freedom through peaceful means. And Jesus did overturn the status quo not through political or military might, but through uplifting the poor, touching lepers, and reaching out to sinners and outcasts. He wasn t like anything the people expected, yet God praised him at his baptism You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. As we close the season of Christmas and move into Ordinary Time, what expectations do we have about how Jesus will act in our lives? Have we decided whom he should be for us and what he should do for us? Or can we just let Jesus be who Jesus will be? JANEL ESKER sundaybulletins@liguori.org The Second Vatican Council...continued...
