FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora We continue our Easter rejoicing on this Second Sunday of Easter, which is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday, as we welcome two new saints of this century. This Sunday is the canonization of two remarkable popes: John XXIII and John Paul II. We ve been so accustomed to saints who have lived in the past whom we have not met in person. This time we have saints who have lived in our time. We can now say that we have experienced living with saints. We have experienced how they have touched the world and how some of us have touched and held their hands. We have lived with saints. I know there are still saintsto-be in our midst. You could be one of them. Saint Pope John XXIII is known for convening the historic Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) that paved way to the many changes in our church and its practices. His papacy was short as he only served for four and a half years before the Second Vatican Council was completed. Yet he was a well-loved pope and is affectionately known today as the Good Pope. His feast day is not celebrated on the date of his death as is usual, but on October 11 th, the day of the first session of the Second Vatican Council. In contrast, Saint Pope John II was the second longestserving pope in history (1978-2005). He was one of the most influential leaders of the 20 th century and one of the most travelled world leaders in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate. He was the one who beatified Pope John XIII. Like Pope John XXIII, his feast day will not be celebrated on the date of his death, but on the anniversary of his papal inauguration in 1978, which is October 22nd. We can trace a connection between Saint Pope John Paul II and this Sunday s Feast of the Divine Mercy, whose devotion was started by Sr. Faustina from Poland. For almost 20 years the devotion, which she wrote in her diary, was not allowed to be spread. A Cardinal from Poland caused her diary to be looked at once again. Six months after her diary was approved, this same Cardinal became Pope John Paul II. And now, he is a saint! I feel blessed to have met John Paul II in person. I hope all of us will have a chance to meet Pope Francis, because he seems to be another good candidate to become a future saint. There was this barber who was known for his arrogant and negative attitude. A customer came for a haircut because he was going to Rome to see the pope. The barber s reaction was typical, You? he said, Meet the pope? Don t make me laugh! The pope sees kings and presidents. What would he want with you? A month later, the man returned for another haircut. How was Rome? asked the barber. Great! I saw the pope! said the man. Oh yeah? From afar, on his balcony from St. Peter s Square with the rest of the crowd? Actually the pope approached me and talked to me. Really? the barber said. What did he say? He said, Who gave you that lousy haircut? The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: What observations did the Second Vatican Council make of the younger generation of the 1960s? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: A change in attitudes and in human structures frequently calls accepted values into question, especially among young people, who have grown impatient on more than one occasion, and indeed become rebels in their distress. Aware of their own influence in the life of society, they want a part in it sooner. This frequently causes parents and educators to experience greater difficulties day by day in discharging their tasks. The institutions, laws and modes of thinking and feeling as handed down from previous generations do not always seem to be well adapted to the contemporary state of affairs; hence arises an upheaval in the manner and even the norms of behavior. Question: How did society's move to modernism affect religion and spirituality overall? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: Finally, these new conditions have their impact on religion. On the one hand a more critical ability to distinguish religion from a magical view of the world and from the superstitions which still circulate purifies it and exacts day by day a more personal and explicit adherence to faith. As a result many persons are achieving a more vivid sense of God. On the other hand, growing numbers of people are abandoning religion in practice. Unlike former days, the denial of God or of religion, or the abandonment of them, are no longer unusual and individual occurrences. For today it is not rare for such things to be presented as requirements of scientific progress or of a certain new humanism. In numerous places these views are voiced not only in the teachings of philosophers, but on every side they influence literature, the arts, the interpretation of the humanities and of history and civil laws themselves. As a consequence, many people are shaken? Editor s Note: Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) presents an overview of the Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social justice, culture, science, technology and ecumenism.
