EASTER ENERGY On Easter morning when the disciples saw the evidence of the Resurrection, they did not at first grasp it. John reports that they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. We, on the other hand, have both scripture and church tradition to teach us. Jesus Christ s resurrection is at the core of our Christian faith. All of today s readings tell us how compelling this event was for the first Christians. There is great energy in all the readings. Peter preaches with authority and conviction. Paul calls for Christians to change their lives. In the Gospel reading we see Peter and John in a footrace to reach Jesus tomb and see with their own eyes the evidence that they still could not understand or completely believe. How can some of this Easter energy be restored to us today? Do we let the astonishing news of the Resurrection touch us now? Does it call us to action? To deeper faith? To conversion? HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. 4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Rejoice! The Lord is Risen! It means rise up with the Lord. Renew your spirit, refresh your soul, the glory of God is upon you. What a glorious way to end this March Madness. We started this month with a very successful St. Patrick s Dinner that has everyone looking forward to next year s. Then we started our Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Then Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI resigned. The conclave! Then a new Pope Francis. Then, Holy Week. To top it all off, the big punctuation mark of this month is Easter. Wow! We welcome the newest members of our Catholic faith community who were baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil: Vivian Lian, Richard Lee, Matthew Midguard and Soary Midguard. We also congratulate Maricel Germo for having her first Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation. Week after week they gathered to learn our Catholic religion, they discovered the beauty of it and they have decided that this is the journey of faith they want to take. The story is told about a little boy who sobbed all the way home in the back of the car after the christening of his baby brother in church. Three times his father asked him what was wrong. Finally the boy said: The priest kept saying that he wanted us to be brought up in a Christian home. So, what s the problem? the father asked. But I want to stay with you guys! the boy cried. How do you look at your Christianity? When I say that I am a Christian, I am not shouting that I am clean living. I m whispering I was lost, but now I m found and forgiven. When I say I am a Christian, I don t speak of this with pride. I m confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide. When I say I am a Christian, I m not trying to be strong. I m professing that I m weak and need His strength to carry on. When I say I am a Christian, I m not bragging of success. I m admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess. When I say I am a Christian, I m not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it. When I say I am a Christian, I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name. When I say I am a Christian, I m not holier than thou. I m just a simple sinner who received God s good grace, somehow! May this Easter bring us a renewed spirit of our Christian life as we journey with God and with one another. Answer from Dei Verbum: In His gracious goodness, God has seen to it that what He had revealed for the salvation of all nations would abide perpetually in its full integrity and be handed on to all generations. Therefore Christ the Lord in whom the full revelation of the supreme God is brought to completion (see Cor. 1:20; 3:13; 4:6), commissioned the Apostles to preach to all men that Gospel which is the source of all saving truth and moral teaching, and to impart to them heavenly gifts. This Gospel had been promised in former times through the prophets, and Christ Himself had fulfilled it and promulgated it with His lips. This commission was faithfully fulfilled by the Apostles who, by their oral preaching, by example, and by observances handed on what they had received from the lips of Christ, from living with Him, and from what He did, or what they had learned through the prompting of the Holy Spirit. The commission was fulfilled, too, by those Apostles and apostolic men who under the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit committed the message of salvation to writing. Question: What happened to divine revelation after the Apostles were gone? Answer from Dei Verbum: But in order to keep the Gospel forever whole and alive within the Church, the Apostles left bishops as their successors, "handing over" to them "the authority to teach in their own place." This sacred tradition, therefore, and Sacred Scripture of both the Old and New Testaments are like a mirror in which the pilgrim Church on earth looks at God, from whom she has received everything, until she is brought finally to see Him as He is, face to face (see 1 John 3:2).
