Millions of years before the invention of the "Golden Arches", which promised all who gazed on them that decent burgers and fries could be found inside, there was the singular Rainbow Arch which signaled God's promise to never again flood and destroy the entire earth. But, why did God choose the Rainbow as a sign of the covenant? Why didn't God choose to have angels sing, "Here Comes the Sun?" Or, Why didn't God take a cue from the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz and write a message in the sky? Something like: "Don't worry my friends, as I promised Noah, this rain is now ending and I will not flood the world again." It is never easy to find an exact answer to questions where God, and God's plan, is involved. But let's take a look at what that Rainbow meant. It cannot be denied that a rainbow is a colorful and beautiful sight to behold. It is vibrantly multicolored and stretches out over the sky covering a vast expanse. It is also intangible; if you ran to where you perceived that the rainbow met the ground, you would find that there is nothing there. What does it mean to have a substantial message emanate from something that has little substance? Isaiah 66:1-66:24 FINAL SATURDAY MORNING SERVICE UNTIL THE SPRING Rabbi's Study Class begins Nov. 1 at 10:00 PM Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays. SHABBATON SCHEDULE 10/24-10/26 JCC members are cordially invited to join in all Shabbaton activities Theme: The Rich month of Cheshvan Friday, October 24 5:45 p.m. - Meet and greet at synagogue 6:00 p.m. - Festive Shabbat
Much commentary has been made about God's use of a "bow". The Hebrew word for "bow" is "Keshet"; it is the word for the bow used to shoot an arrow. The rainbow, the ultimate symbol of peace, is actually a weapon? Indeed the name would indicate as much; however, because it is set over the earth in such a fashion that the arrows would be fired away fro the earth, it is meant as the ultimate peace sign. The Rambam (12th century Spain and Egypt) describes it as such: "It is shaped the opposite way to show that it is not aiming anything from heaven at mankind. Similarly it is the practice of combatants to turn their bow the other way to show they are offering peace to their adversary. Further, the bow has no string by which to shoot the arrows. I am wondering if there is not another message. A close reading of the text reveals that God sets the rainbow as a reminder to God (and not necessarily to humanity) of the covenant not to destroy the earth again. Could it really be that God needs to be reminded of God's promises? God may not need a reminder, but I think the Text serves as a reminder of the fact that we all need to be mindful of our promises. How many times have we made a promise that we have, for one reason or another, not kept? Whether it is a vow to our selves or a promise to others, the importance of remembering that promise and reinforcing and protecting our integrity and the concomitant trust of others, cannot be underestimated. If kept, a promise is a source of strength and comfort. When a promise is broken, it is as if a weapon has been unleashed in all of its fury and destructive power. We should mark our pledges with rainbows and signs, and anything that reminds us to keep them. Flood the world with responsibility, joy, and good deeds.
