Ocean County NJ) Documents & Links HOW TO CELEBRATE CHANUKAH - 7 EASY STEPS 1. REMEMBER TO TELL THE STORY of holiday, its history and meaning. 2. DUST OFF YOUR MENORAH/HANNUKIAH and find a special place to display it. On the first night, the shamash is lit, a blessing is recited, and the first candle is lit. The first candle occupies the rightmost place on the Hanukkiah. Candles are placed from right to left, but lit from left to right. The candle that you light first is always the last candle that you placed on the Hanukkiah; likewise, the candle that you light last is always the first candle that you placed on the Hanukkiah. On the second night, the shamash plus two candles are lit and so on until the eighth night, when all nine branches contain lit candles. Traditionally, the lighted Hanukkiah is placed near a window, so that everyone passing by can remember the FRIDAY December 4, :30 PM SATURDAY December 5, :00 AM Torah Study with Rabbi Jay 10:00 AM Services Torah Reading Vayeshev Genesis 37:1-40:23

RECITE THE BLESSINGS when you light the Menorah On the first day of Hanukkah, recite the following blessing: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Hanukkah. (Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with Your commandments and commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.) (Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us and brought us to this season.) On all subsequent nights of Hanukkah, when you light the Hanukkiah, recite the following blessing: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Hanukkah. (Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with Your commandments and commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.) 4 beginning of each round, every participant puts one game piece into the center "pot." In addition, every time the pot is empty or has only one game piece left, every player should put one in the pot. Every time it's your turn, spin the dreidel once. Depending on the outcome, you give or get game pieces from the pot: Nun means "nisht" or "nothing." The player does nothing. Gimmel means "gantz" or "everything." The player gets everything in the pot. Hey means "halb" or "half." The player gets half of the pot. (If there is an odd number of pieces in the pot, the player takes half of the total plus one). Shin (outside of Israel) means "shtel" or "put in." Peh (in Israel) also means "put in." The player adds a game piece to the pot. If you find that you have no game pieces left, you are either "out" or may ask a fellow player for a "loan.". When one person has won everything, that round of the game is over! 5. GIVE SMALL TOKENS/GIFTS to children/grandchildren each night of Chanukah. 6. EAT FOODS COOKED IN OIL Hanukkah just wouldn't be the same without the traditional latkes and applesauce. The frying oil reminds us of the miracle of the oil. Small powdered sugar donuts, called Sufganiyot are also a popular Hanukkah treat, especially in Israel. Fried, oil-rich foods are the theme! 6 Inside and Out One of the lessons I learn from Parashat Vayeishev is that, for better or for worse, we are all identified by external markers. People form opinions about us based on how we physically appear to them; on how we dress. It is therefore interesting to see what happens when these external identifiers are removed. The Joseph story provides a great example of the possibilities presented when we lose our identifying facades. this Sunday afternoon from 1-4 PM at his home 111 Wayville Avenue, Waretown, NJ (Greenbriar) Joseph is known in the story as the owner of the (multi-)colored tunic, specially made for him by his doting father who does not attempt to hide the fact that Joseph is the favorite of all of his children. (A note to those with young children: This is not a good parenting paradigm.) While he wears the tunic, Joseph's brothers see him as a tattletale, a dreamer and a basic-allaround spoiled brother. All of these identifiers were, indeed, true, but they were made all the more powerful by the fact that Joseph wore that multi-colored tunic. So incensed are the brothers by Joseph's personality, as highlighted by the tunic, that they hatched a plan to get rid of him. They were going to kill him but, ultimately, decided to throw him in a pit. As the story unfolds he is retrieved from the pit by nomadic traders and sold into slavery. Just before his brothers throw Joseph in the pit, they forcibly remove the colored tunic. Joseph is no longer spoiled, nor is he a tattletale, nor is he a dreamer. Our deepfelt condolences to Barry and Luci and the entire family. "May God remember forever our dear ones who have gone to their eternal rest. May they be at one with the One who is life eternal. May the beauty of their lives shine for evermore, and may our lives always bring honor to their memory." Indeed, when shed of the tunic, Joseph somehow changes. He is sold as a slave to Potiphar, the Captain of Pharaoh's guard. Without the colorful tunic to serve as a distraction, Joseph works hard and quickly becomes the trusted head of Potiphar's household. In this capacity he presumably wears some form of clothing befitting his new station in life. ARLENE & FRED SCHRAGGER It seems that Potiphar's wife found Joseph attractive, and she

7 made several advances toward him that grew in intensity. He consistently refused her but, in one last desperate attempt to coax his indiscretion, she approached him when the house was empty, grabbed his "garment" and begged him to sleep with her. So powerful was his desire not to commit adultery with his boss' wife, that he tore himself away, leaving the garment in the wife's hands. (There actually is a bit of humor if one conjures up the notion of Joseph running away from her stark naked). This represents the second time he is stripped of his external identifier. No longer is Joseph going to be the head of Potiphar's household. Instead, he is thrown in prison and reduced to wearing prison garb. Therein he, again, works hard and becomes the second-in-command to the warden. He serves in this capacity until he is called to interpret Pharaoh's disturbing dreams. on their daughter-in-law Risa Goluboff's appointment to be the next Dean of the School of Law at the University of Virginia Again he loses his outer identifier, only this time he is in control of its removal. In fact, the Torah specifically tells us that before Joseph went to Pharaoh, he changed his "garment". Joseph becomes Pharaoh's second-in-command and, at that time, is given fine clothes to wear. Thus we see that Joseph wore several external identifiers in the course of his story. Each change of clothing symbolized a change in his personality; a shift in the way he was viewed; a shift in the way he viewed the world; and a shift in the way he lived his life. SHARE YOUR NEWS CONTACT: rvalen1963@aol.com I think that Torah is trying to tell us that even though our external markers help to define us to others, change is always possible. Even a spoiled tattletale, in possession of a beautiful multi-colored coat can become a slave. Even a slave can become the head of an important household. Even the head of an important household can become a prisoner. Even a prisoner can become the head of a great nation. What is needed is a willingness to transform oneself. Joseph clearly had the necessary desire. I would imagine that having CARING COMMITTEE This committee acts as a support system for congregation members facing illness and other personal situations that need to be addressed. 8 God on one's side could be helpful as well. Hanukkah begins this coming Sunday evening, December 6th. This year as we observe our Hanukkah candles flicker and shimmer, each of us should commit to taking the opportunity to consider the changes that we need to make in order to improve ourselves, and the world in which we live. After reading the entire Joseph story, with a focus on his various metamorphoses, we learn that change is a distinct possibility for each of us. Even an unsightly and destructive caterpillar is capable of becoming a gracefully beautiful butterfly. you are in need of assistance or if you know of a JCC member that needs our help GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Shabbat Shalom and Chag Hanukkah Sameach - Rabbi Michael S.
