In the Traditional Haggadah, right after the Four Questions, we begin telling the story of our departure from the Land of Egypt. Avadeem Hayeenu L'Pharaoh B'Mitzrayim: We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt...And if the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our ancestors out of Egypt, we, our children, and our children's children would be subjugated to Thus we begin the Seder as slaves and recognize that, but for Gods beneficence, we would still be slaves. To highlight that we are acting in a real-life play, later we are told: "B'Chol Dor Vahdor": "In every generation one is required to see oneself as if he/she had gone out of Egypt." The fact that we are told to act as if we are slaves, leads to a frequent question. What are our Mitzrayims, what are the things that we are slaves to? This can lead to wonderful conversation, introspection, and perhaps, a deeper understanding of the world in which we live. But by the end of the Seder, we are redeemed from slavery and we sing out in joy: "L'Shana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim!": "Next year in Jerusalem!" We are free and we are hopeful about what is to special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays. So, if in the beginning we talk about our "Mitzrayims", those things to which we are slaves and that bring us sorrow, it is only fitting that at the end we should talk about our "Yerushalyims", those things for which we are joyful. We should thus pose the question: "Now that I am free, what will I do with my freedom?" And of course we should dance and sing. I would love to know about your Yerushalayims; what makes you feel free? and let me know. Don't forget to join us for services the last two days of Passover! Services will be on Friday morning, April 10, 2015 at 9:30 AM, and on Friday evening at 7:30 PM. There are also services on Saturday morning, April 11, 2015 during which we will have the Yizkor service. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you! Jay THE WEEK THAT WAS... JCC OF LBI COMMUNITY SEDER BASIL KARP There are so many folks out there who for whatever reason have no Seder to attend. Others are just exhausted after hosting a Seder on the first night and are glad to participate in the ritual at a community gathering. We are so proud to provide a wonderful Seder at our Center for all our JCC family and friends to enjoy. Bellitto of Kean University will present a program that takes us through the repeated rises and falls, twists and turns, of the city holy to three religions. This program has been made available through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities NEW TORAHS Please consider being a part of this campaign to supplement the clergy and facility needs of our congregation. 7 We are very excited to announce the plans to acquire two new Torahs for our synagogue. Our Holy Ark was designed to hold 5 Torahs and these last two acquisitions will complete the set. Our three existing Torahs are being cleaned and refurbished thanks to the generosity of two of our families. The JCC is undertaking a fundraising effort so that the new Torahs can be obtained without adversely affecting the already approved budget for Our membership and our friends are asked to support the JCC in one of the great Mitzvahs, helping to bring Torahs here. There will be additional information in the April Bulletin but if you are ready to help... Thank you. A wedding, baby naming, renewal of vows can have special meaning our beautiful sanctuary which seats 124 people (can be opened to more seating). Your reception, special birthday or anniversary party can be accommodated in the large social hall which has a capacity for table seating for 200 and can be set up auditorium style for 280 persons. In addition there is a kosher restaurant-sized kitchen, two classrooms and a library.
