3 Infinity Program March 7 Documents & Links A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI PARSHAT YITRO The ending of the Exodus story finds God giving the Israelites the Ten Commandments. Without going into detail about the Commandments themselves, I find myself wondering why God considered them so important to deliver. Indeed, God is so eager to give them that the Deity only waits 3 months to hand them over. One might imagine that God would give the Israelites a bit more time to bask in their new found freedom before burdening them with myriad laws, rules, and regulations. For my simple response to this query, I think that we need to go back to the Book of Genesis. Actually, we need to look at the very beginning of that Book. Therein we are told that the world was unformed and a void (some say it was utter chaos). And then God says, "Let there be light." With that statement, God began putting the world in order. God formed this, created that, and established a weekly paradigm. At its core the creation story is all an effort on Gods part to get things just right. It all appeared to proceed very nicely until Adam and Eve pulled the stunt with the apple. After that, things became increasingly disorderly. In the Book of Exodus, God is starting a new chapter of creating order with the Israelites. They were slaves who suddenly became free after 400+ years of humiliating subjugation. It is very possible that, once exposed to freedom, the Israelites might have lost control completely. God wants to avoid this seeming inevitable chaos and, as they come out of Egypt, unformed and a void, God began the ordering process all over again. JEWS OF CUBA Rabbi Richard Hammerman and his wife Sharon will discuss their recent visit to Cuba, the current state of the Jewish community in that country and its future at services on Friday evening, February 13. Jews have lived in Cuba for centuries and there are somewhere around 1,500 Jews now living there, mostly in Havana. With landmark talks about renewing diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba, there is a great deal of renewed interest in the island. Rabbi Hammerman, a frequent guest at the JCC of LBI, organized a Jewish Mission to Cuba this December, 2014 as Chairman of the World Jewry Committee of Congregation Agudath Israel, Caldwell, NJ. The day following the group's return, President Obama announced that Alan Gross was freed after 5-years imprisonment in Cuba. Rabbi Hammerman will be

4 God does this by giving the Israelites a paradigm through which to live their lives. The Ten Commandments, and the rest of God's laws, create a system whose goal is to keep the Israelites "ordered". Whether that system has been successful is subject to much debate. I believe this to be the lesson: When our lives become chaotic, the best thing to do is to try to create order. Once order is at hand, we can create a plan to move forward. 6 EMERGENCY SKILLS ASSESSMENT services on February 6, 2015 Long Beach Township Police Department is initiating a new program to identify people and different organizations with special skills and equipment that could be useful in the event of a local emergency or disaster. CELEBRATE A MILESTONE AT THE JCC OF LBI This committee acts as a support system for congregation members facing illness and other personal situations that need to be addressed. A wedding, baby naming, renewal of vows can have special meaning our beautiful sanctuary which seats 124 people (can be opened to more seating). Your reception, special birthday or anniversary party can be accommodated in the large social hall which has a capacity for table seating for 200 and can be set up auditorium style for 280 persons. In addition there is a kosher restaurantsized kitchen, two classrooms and a library.
