FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Back to reality! This has become a new mantra for those who are coming back from vacation. Having taken a break from their usual lives being lived, they face again the day to day reality. I join with our parishioners who have recently come home from vacation in saying this. At times people say: Get Real! It synonymous with saying: be practical, be true; wake up from your dreams. Although our lives are full of dreams and hopes, we work hard to make them come true, so that they can become a reality. Well, dreams can indeed come true. The many dreams for our parish can also come true. I know I have to face them now and make it happen, for I am now back to reality. Now here s a Reality Check: One day on the occasion of their 40 th wedding anniversary the husband said to his wife: "Darling, 40 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, no car, no TV, no money and slept on a sofa bed, but I got to sleep every night with a hot, good looking, 19 year old. Now, we have a beautiful house, two nice cars, king size bed, money and a 50" screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 59 year old woman... The wife replied: Well, go out and find a hot 19 year old beautiful girl, and I would make sure that you would once again be living in a cheap apartment, with no car, no money, and sleeping on a sofa bed. Aren't older women great? They really know how to solve your mid-life crisis. Our 100 year old parishioner Gene Relampagos must have seen the greatness in his better half, Pat Relampagos, our Senior Club President, as they had a validation of their union through the Sacrament of Marriage officiated by Fr. Toan last Friday, July 12, 2013 in the chapel of our Pastoral Center. They are showing us the importance of the Sacrament of Marriage, and to value the union of life and love. They have proven that marriage is not only for the young. They have withstood the test of time and escaped mid-life crises. Most importantly, they have deeply loved each other and their children. They have remained in Christ s love. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Relampagos! The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: How is the liturgy tied to the Body of Christ? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Christ indeed always associates the Church with Himself in this great work wherein God is perfectly glorified and men are sanctified. The Church is His beloved Bride who calls to her Lord, and through Him offers worship to the Eternal Father. Rightly, then, the liturgy is considered as an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Christ. In the liturgy the sanctification of the man is signified by signs perceptible to the senses, and is effected in a way which corresponds with each of these signs; in the liturgy the whole public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, that is, by the Head and His members. From this it follows that every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others; no other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree. In the earthly liturgy we take part in a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy which is celebrated in the holy city of Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God, a minister of the holies and of the true tabernacle; we sing a hymn to the Lord's glory with all the warriors of the heavenly army; venerating the memory of the saints, we hope for some part and fellowship with them; we eagerly await the Saviour, Our Lord Jesus Christ, until He, our life, shall appear and we too will appear with Him in glory. Editor s Note: This week we continue to explore Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy), which has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are reviewing the constitution s first chapter, The Nature of the Sacred Liturgy and Its Importance in the Church's Life. Next Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 11:30 AM, Fr. Edward Inyanwachi will be celebrating his farewell Mass at Holy Name. Fr. Edward will continue his ministry in Nigeria. A reception will follow in the Flanagan Center.

For today's reading we join Abraham shortly after his name change. It was with Abram becoming Abraham, the father of all nations, at the making of the second covenant, that men and women began to rely upon God in faith and are changed by it. God promises Abraham that within the year his aged wife, Sarah, will have a son. Abraham's reaction is to laugh. Immediately following today's reading, Sarah laughs at the news (Gen 18:12). The child born was named Isaac, which means "laughter". The second reading is from the letter of Paul to the Colossians, 1:24-28. Last week Paul used the occasion to answer the Judaizers and remind them of the absolute supremacy of Jesus Christ. Today Paul tells us his role in proclaiming the gospel. "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church." The Gospel is from St. Luke, 10:38-42 and recounts the familiar story of Martha and Mary. St Augustine comments on this scene as follows: "Martha, who was arranging and preparing the Lord's meal, was busy doing many things, whereas Mary preferred to find her meal in what the Lord was saying. In a way she deserted her sister, who was very busy, and sat herself down at Jesus' feet and just listened to his words. She was faithfully obeying what the Psalm said: 'Be still, and know that I am God' (Ps 46:10). Martha was getting annoyed, Mary was feasting; the former coping with many things, the latter concentrating on one. Both occupations were good" (Sermon 103). Martha has come to be, as it were, the symbol of the active life, and Mary that of the contemplative life. However, for most Christians, called as they are to sanctify themselves in the middle of the world, action and contemplation cannot be regarded as two opposite ways of practicing the Christian faith: an active life forgetful of union with God is useless and barren; but an apparent life of prayer which shows no concern for apostolate and the sanctification of ordinary things also fails to please God. The key lies in being able to combine these two lives, without either harming the other. Close union between action and contemplation can be achieved in very different ways, depending on the specific vocation each person is given by God. Excerpted from The Navarre Bible - St. Luke ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process which invites individuals to learn more about our Catholic faith. Sessions focus on the teachings of the Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at Easter. Classes will begin in September.
