HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH San Francisco, CA www.holyname-sf.org TWENTY SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 26, 2010 PRAYER TO SAN LORENZO RUIZ de MANILA Beloved SAN LORENZO RUIZ DE MANILA and Companion Martyrs: You, who experienced the supreme sacrifice of martyrdom for the proclamation of the Christian faith, inspire us with your strength and firmness of conviction to withstand the adversities of our lives and the difficulties of our existence. Teach us with your marvelous example and saintly wisdom to turn trials into blessings, by showing us the glory that comes from discovering the redemptive power of God's love. When times are full of grief, when moments are suffused with worry, let us feel your presence in our midst, so that we will be aware that you are by our side, strengthening us and interceding for us before Almighty God that we may have patience in our sufferings and consolation in our hardships. Help us realize that only in knowing our weakness can we be strong, only in undergoing sadness can we find real happiness, and only in passing through trials and distress can we find peace, encouragement and spiritual joy. AMEN.

Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). We are confident that the funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for some of the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. The Holy Name Tree of Life will be unveiled and blessed on October 10, 2010 at the 85th Anniversary Mass at 11:30 A.M. Each leaf costs $500 with free engraving for donations placed by September 30, 2010. FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora It was nice to see such a big crowd at the 9:30AM mass last Sunday for the School Spirit Mass. I was happy to see some of our former students, who are not even Catholic, still come up to ask for a blessing. The International Food Fair that followed in Ryan Hall was very successful. Thanks to Julia Kwan for coordinating the event and of course to the many volunteers who served some delicious entrées from different countries. And yes, we visited many countries in just a day. I was reminded of a story about some children who were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray, "Take only one. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. One child whispered to another, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples." While eating with our fingers, our hands got dirty and we were not able to shake hands with each other. But as a school father was quick to say: Father, our hands are dirty, but our hearts are pure. Make your hearts pure! I wish I could tell this to those dirty hands who took away four of our very expensive microphones inside the church. In these economic times, some people don t even care that God is there watching all the time. At a neighboring church, another pair of dirty hands picked up some money from the collection basket and slipped it inside his pocket. When confronted, he immediately ran away. At yet another church I visited few days ago, the cantor told me their recording equipment underneath their church organ was stolen some weeks ago. Hard times and desperate moments can make hearts impure! We need to be more vigilant nowadays. We need to watch each other and our belongings too. Please report any suspicious activity and persons immediately to our staff. I want to acknowledge and thank our Knights of Holy Name, now headed by Mr. Bill Flaherty, who take turns in watching our church from 1-4 PM almost every weekday. We need more of these Knights and so we invite other men to join them. We are now in the process of getting surveillance cameras to be installed inside the church. Those misguided people, with dirty hands and impure hearts, might think that God is only watching the apples. The cameras will prove to them that they are wrong. SAN LORENZO FEASTDAY MASS The Fil-Am Club invites you to a Mass to celebrate the feast day of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, patron Saint of the Philippines, on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. The Mass will be at 6:00 pm at Holy Name Church and a potluck reception will follow in the Flanagan Center. Filipino attire at this event is encouraged, but optional. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in Manila and later canonized on October 28,1987, San Lorenzo Ruiz holds the distinction of being the first person beatified outside of the Vatican. He also holds the honor of being the first Filipino saint, the most improbable of saints, as Pope John Paul II described him during the canonization ceremony. San Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint venerated in the Catholic Church. He was martyred during the persecution of Christians in Japan in the 16th century. Lorenzo was beatified in Manila on February 18, 1981 by Pope John Paul II, the first beatification held outside the Vatican. San Lorenzo was elevated to Sainthood and canonized by Pope John Paul II in the Vatican City, Rome on October 18, 1987, making him the first Filipino saint and the first Filipino martyr.
