St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community 10750 Ohio Ave (at Selby) Los Angeles, California 90024 (310) 474-1527 www.sp-apostle.org Wherever you are on your faith journey, you are welcome here Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 17, 2010 I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. PERSISTENCE As the end of the liturgical calendar draws near the liturgy focuses more and more on the end of time. This week we are reminded that God s ultimate victory may be a long way off. Perseverance in prayer, proclamation, and work will be needed along the way. The characters in today s readings can serve as role models for us on the long journey of discipleship. In the reading from Exodus Joshua does not give up fighting, Moses does not give up praying, and Aaron and Hur do not give up supporting him until the victory is won. In the Gospel story the widow does not stop begging until justice is done. As the letter to Timothy urges, we are to be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient until the coming of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead (2 Timothy 4:2, 1). The next meeting will be on Friday, November 5, 2010 in the Multipurpose Room from 9 to 10:30 AM. Join us for stimulating and thoughtful discussion of current bestsellers and classics. For this meeting, the members have chosen to read Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Focusing on the world of medicine, this epic novel follows a man on a mythic quest to find his father. Beginning in India, the story progresses to Ethiopia where it remains until the protagonist immigrates to an inner-city hospital in New York City. Marion, the narrator of this fictional autobiography, is one of a set of identical twins whose mother dies giving birth. Their horrorstruck father vanishes, and the boys are raised by Indian doctors living on the grounds of a mission hospital in early 1950s Ethiopia. The title Cutting for Stone is taken from the Hippocratic Oath, but may also reflect a double meaning. The biological father of Marion and his twin, Shiva, is Thomas Stone, a famous surgeon. In what may be a subconscious effort to emulate and impress their absent parent, both become skilled surgeons. They are Cutting for Stone. New members are welcome. Page 6 October 17, 2010 Readings for the weekend of Oct 25th, 2010 Reading 1 Sir 35:12-14, 16-18 The LORD is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Though not unduly partial toward the weak, yet he hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint. The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms the right, and the Lord will not delay. Reading 2 2 Tm 4:6-8, 16-18 Beloved: I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. At my first defense no one appeared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen. Gospel Lk 18:9-14 Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector, I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income. But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Question for GOSPEL: Luke 18: 9-14 (Pharisee and Tax Collector) Do I hide anything from God? Let me ask God to be honest with him about the good and the bad in my life. HAPPY ARE THEY Happy are they who grieve not for what they have not, but give thanks for what they do have. Anonymous Men s Retreat A pause in life s journey A time to reflect and re-energize One day only Led by our Father Eric Andrews, CSP and held at Paulist Productions in Malibu on Saturday, Nov 6th, 2010.
