1 St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community Ohio Ave (at Selby) Los Angeles, CA (310) www. sp-apostle.org Wherever you are on your faith journey, you are welcome here Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2012 It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. Isaiah 43:25 FORGIVENESS OF SINS Isaiah announced the word of the Lord: [S]ee, I am doing something new! (Isaiah 43:19). And what was this new thing? A promise for a people who did not call upon me and grew weary of me (43:22); a promise of forgiveness. It is I, I, who wipe out... your offenses; / your sins I remember no more (43:25). Paul told the Corinthians and tells us that Jesus is God s yes, and that all God s promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Does that include God s promise to forgive sins? Mark gives the answer when he relates how some people lowered a paralytic through a hole in the roof, seeking a cure. As far as we can tell, no one requested forgiving the man s sins. But that s what Jesus did, exactly as Isaiah had announced. Then, lest anyone doubt his authority on earth to forgive sins, Jesus said, [P]ick up your mat, and go home (Mark 2:11). The man rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away (2:12). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 Page 6 February 19, 2012 Readings for Sunday February 26th First Sunday of Lent Reading 1 Gn 9:8-15 God said to Noah and to his sons with him: "See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth." God added: "This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings." Reading 2 1 Pt 3:18-22 Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him. Gospel Mk 1:12-15 The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." Los Angeles Religious Education Congress 2012 Join us at the annual Religious Education Congress held at the Anaheim Convention Center, March 22 (youth day) through March 25, If you have never before attended Congress, you are assured of a wonderful experience. All are welcome to attend! You may also access the book on line and register by visiting Please read the following letter if your children are in grades 5-8 and have an interest in altar serving at St. Paul the Apostle St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community Altar Server Information Dear Parents, Your fifth-thru-eighth-grade children have the opportunity to consider becoming, or continuing to serve the parish community as altar servers. This is a sacred privilege and one that has lasting impact on a child s religious development and sense of service to the greater community. In recent years some children and their parents have seen altar serving as a good, extra curricular activity to add to a child s high school resume. It is so much more than that. Because of the importance of this ministry we have revised the altar server program. We would like to invite you (parents only) to one of two meetings where we will share with you some of the theology and practicalities of this ministry. Parent attendance at one of the following meetings is required in order for your child to either continue, or join the altar server program at St Paul s. Please have a conversation with your child to determine if altar serving is something that is important to both of you. We look forward to seeing you on either: Thursday, March 1st at 8:00 am in the Church Monday, March 12th at 7:00 pm in the Church Fr.
