1 St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community Ohio Ave (at Selby) Los Angeles, California (310) Wherever you are on your faith journey, you are welcome here Third Sunday of Lent March 27, 2011 While we were still sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 THIRST Each time today s Gospel story is read, I can t help but think of the many television commercials I ve seen depicting perspiring athletes lifting a beverage to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Samaritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commercial level. She asks Jesus for the flowing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God asking for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. THE WATER FROM HEAVEN As dry flour cannot be united into a lump of dough, or a loaf, but needs water, so we who are many cannot be made one in Christ Jesus without the water that comes from heaven. Mass Schedule Sunday Masses 7:30 am 9:30 am 11:30 am 5:00 pm Saturday (one mass only) 5:00 pm Vigil Weekdays (Monday- Friday) Daily Masses are: 6:30 AM and 5:30 PM Reconciliation Thursday & Saturday 4:00-4:45 pm First Friday Exposition Oct May Only
2 Page 2 March 27, 2011 May I have a drink of Water? Jesus approaches a woman who is shunned by her townsfolk In the first place, it was unlikely that a man would ask a woman for anything and even more unbelievable that Jesus, a Jew, would ask something of a Samaritan, a great enemy of the Jewish People. One of the engaging elements of the story is the dialogue between her and Jesus. They are both honest with each other Jesus love for his Father must have been such that the work he most enjoyed, the work that satisfied him and actually gave him energy, was leading people to faith. This gospel gives us great courage to love and accept those that are different from us. Who are the Samaritans that live among us today? They are the homeless people, the people whose language differs from our own, convicted felons, gang member, gays and lesbians. Jesus offers us living water Just as he did the woman at the well. It is the water of salvation. Reflect on these four words, I am among you. He wants you and all the Samaritans of our world to believe and know that he is in the midst of our world, as he was over 2000 years ago! He needs you to witness this to others! TODAY S READINGS First Reading When the people grumbled to Moses for water in the desert, the LORD heard and brought forth water from the rock for all to drink (Exodus 17:3-7). Psalm If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8). Gospel Ask, and you will be given living water so that you will never thirst again (John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]). This gospel describes the love of God and the love of neighbor. We are shown how we should love, with all our heart, with all our soul, and with our entire mind, physically, spiritually, intellectually, inwardly, unstintingly, totally, and forever. What will you do to be ready when the Samaritans of our world asks you, May I have a drink of water? Are you ready to dialogue and witness by your example who Jesus is? 6 Page 6 March 27, 2011 Readings for the weekend of April 3, 2011 Reading 1 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a Gospel Jn 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, T h e L O R D s a i d t o S a m u e l : Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen my king from among his sons. As Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, Surely the LORD s anointed is here before him. But the LORD said to Samuel: Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the heart. In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, The LORD has not chosen any one of these. Then Samuel asked Jesse, Are these all the sons you have? Jesse replied, There is still the youngest, who is t e n d i n g t h e s h e e p. S a mu e l s a i d t o J e s s e, Send for him; we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here. Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them. He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance. The LORD said, There anoint him, for this is the one! Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, and from that day on, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David. As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, Go wash in the Pool of Siloam which means Sent. So he went and washed, and came back able to see. His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, Isn t this the one who used to sit and beg? Some said, It is, but others said, No, he just looks like him. He said, I am. They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see. So some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath. But others said, How can a sinful man do such signs? And there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man again, What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet. They answered and said to him, You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us? Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, Do you believe in the Son of Man? He answered and said, Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him? Jesus said to him, You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he. He said, I do believe, Lord, and he worshiped him. Reading 2 Eph 5:8-14 Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.
