Acts 2:3 THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase compare and contrast that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the Church. Let s contrast, then compare. Luke s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. 2 Page 2 June 12, 2011 Please Welcome Fr. Dat Tran, CSP It is my pleasure to share with you a recent conversation that I had with our Paulist President, Fr. Mike McGarry, CSP. Fr. McGarry called to tell me that the Presidential Board was looking for a suitable assignment where newly ordained Paulist priest, Fr. Dat Tran, CSP, would thrive in his first formative and critical years as a priest. The Presidential Board chose St. Paul s for many reasons which include some of the following: our desire to do more Youth Ministry, to assist in our Young Adult Ministry, to service a chaplain to two grades in our school, to preach and preside at Sunday and daily liturgies, and to celebrate the sacraments, especially Baptism, the Sacrament of the Sick, and the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). In addition they chose St. Paul s as the local Paulist House has a great diversity of men who will offer Fr. Dat the support he needs. A personal desire of my own which I have shared with our pastoral staff is a desire to involve the many and varied Asian peoples who worship with us to become more involved in the St. Paul s community, over above Sunday mass. I continue to work closely with the Finance Council getting the parish on strong financial ground. While we are in a much better financial situation than when I arrived four years ago, we continue work on strengthening our Parish Finances and Ministries. To that end, the Finance Council and Parish Staff join me in welcoming our newly ordained Paulist, Fr. Dat Tran, CSP to our parish as the third full-time Paulist priest. A picture and biography of Fr. Tran follow. Please join me in welcoming Fr. Dat on July 2 nd and 3 rd. Fr. John Ardis, CSP Pastor Fr. Dat Tran, CSP Fr. Dat Q. Tran, C.S.P, the youngest of six siblings, is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Tien Tran. His family immigrated to the United States when he was as young child and settled in northern California. He encountered the Paulist Fathers as an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley studying political science and American studies. In 2004, he entered the Paulist Novitiate and made his First Promise in As a Paulist student, he has been assigned to Paulist foundations in Boulder, Knoxville, New York City, and Austin. Before making his Final Promise and being ordained a deacon last September, he traveled to Vietnam and Guatemala to study Vietnamese and Spanish. He recently completed his Master of Divinity degree at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His first assignment as a Paulist priest will be at St. Paul the Apostle parish in Los Angeles, California. Work with Adult Groups Or Would Like To? The finance council and the parish staff have discussed how best the parish can respond to the increased need that we are experiencing through phone inquiries, walk-ins and the increased requests from various charitable agencies. Since September 2009, the parish has been giving 5% of the weekly collection to a charity.

4 Page 4 June 12, 2011 St. Paul s Diaconate Update by Danny Amos As some of you know I am enrolled in the Los Angeles Archdiocese Diaconate Formation Program. I really appreciate the support so many of you have given me and I love answering all of your questions about the program. I thought I would share with everyone some of the most common questions I hear: Are you a deacon yet? No, not yet. (by far the most asked question!) Why not? The program to become a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is 5 years. I have just finished the third year of the program, so hopefully I will be ordained in two years. How often do you meet for the program? We generally meet every other Saturday for class. We also have an occasional retreat and we meet for service projects. Between classes we do a lot of reading, writing papers, service projects and prayer. Is it fun? It s fantastic. It s one of the best things I have ever done in my life. What s so fun about it? I have explored beliefs in myself, my faith and my spirit that I never imagined existed. I have made some of the best friends I will ever have. And maybe best of all, I have grown in my relationship with my wife Stacey in ways that are an indescribable gift to us and to our family. Is it true that your wife has to go to class with you and do all the reading and papers? Yes and No. The rules have recently changed. In the past the wives did all of the same work as their husbands. Now the wives are required to be fully involved in the first year, but then for the last four years the wives are encouraged to be fully involved but are only required to attend about 70% of the classes and the academic work load is voluntary. Did your wife think you were crazy when you told her you wanted to join the program? Yes! But now that we have enjoyed these past 3 years in the program it has been the most amazing experience you can have as a couple. Do your three children still think you are crazy for joining the diaconate program? No, not anymore! I think they have changed their minds since they have seen what it has meant to Stacey and me and because they have learned what being a deacon is really all about. Where do you go for the classes? Alemany High School in the San Fernando Valley (near the San Fernando Mission). What do you do in diaconate class? The program has three general aspects to it: Academic: We learn a lot about the teachings of the Catholic Church, about the historical Jesus, Mariology, the Saints, etc; Practical: We learn how to preside at baptisms, weddings, funeral vigils and prayer services, we take homiletics classes (how to preach) and we learn about other aspects of liturgy; and Spiritual: We explore questions like What is God? and What is heaven? and learn to develop a much deeper relationship with God. When you are a deacon, will you stay at St. Paul s or be sent to another church? I will be serving at St. Paul s. Our Pastor Father John has been a huge support to me and Stacey. Will you work in the church office? No. Deacons keep their day jobs. I m a lawyer and will continue to run my company, Higher Legal. What is a deacon? A deacon is one of the three types of clergy in the Catholic Church. (Bishop, Priest and Deacon) I remember when Father Brad was called Deacon Brad. Does that mean you are going to be a priest? No. A priest becomes a transitional deacon on the way to becoming a priest. A permanent deacon (which is what I will be) is a completely different ministry and is just that, always a deacon. The diaconate is a separate and distinct ministry in the Catholic Church from the priesthood. How can you be part of the clergy if you are married? Permanent deacons are allowed to be married. In fact, all 10 of the guys in my diaconate class are married. What does a deacon actually do? Deacons serve three roles in their diaconate ministry: (1) Service: Deacons are involved in serving the marginalized in society, for example by initiating programs like Sandwich Builders and the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition, and by serving those who are hurting in any way by helping them to find comfort in God; (2) Liturgy: Deacons preside at baptisms, weddings, funeral vigils and prayer services; and (3) The Word: Deacons read the Gospel at mass and give homilies. I will also continue to serve at our school as the 5 th Grade Chaplain.

5 Page 5 June 12, 2011 How many people are in your deaconate class? Ten guys and their ten wives. (The Archdiocese officially refers to us as diaconate couples ) What are the guys like in your deaconate program? They are all great guys and are from very diverse backgrounds. The other guys in my class include another lawyer, a CNN reporter, a realtor, a guy who works at Disneyland, a rocket scientist, a corrections officer, an alcoholic beverage distributor, an accountant, a dispatcher and a retired guy. Have we ever had a deacon here at St. Paul s? I don t know, but not since I joined our parish in When did the Catholic Church start having deacons? About 2,000 years ago when the Church was founded and then again in approximately 1973 after Vatican II. Here is the short version of the story. Many say the first seven deacons were Stephen, Phillip and the other five servants who are referred to in the Bible in Acts 6: 1-7. These first seven deacons were specifically appointed by the 12 Apostles in about AD to provide service to the faithful. For the first several hundred years of our Church there were more deacons than priests. The Church was essentially located in big cities within the Roman Empire and there were enough bishops to serve mass and provide for the number of Christians who lived in the cities. As the number of Christians increased in size and began to move out into the countryside, the bishops were not able to provide for all the faithful. Since deacons could not preside at mass, but priests could, the number of priests began to grow and the number of deacons began to decline. Sometime around AD deacons gradually disappeared and the Church then had only bishops and priests. Our Church essentially went without permanent deacons for over 1,200 years. Then, during World War II, many of the 2,579 Catholic priests who were imprisoned at the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany, including Father Schamoni and Father Pies, began to ask how our Church could once again better serve the people of the world. They realized that the Church needed to return to its roots of service by having all three of its original Orders of Clergy (Bishops, Priests and Deacons). These priests continued their crusade to reestablish the permanent diaconate during discussions leading up to and at Vatican II. The permanent diaconate was brought back as a result of Vatican II in the council s Dogmatic Constitution of the Church, Lumen Gentium. The first permanent deacons began to be ordained in about Are there many deacons in the United States? Yes and the numbers of deacons are increasing rapidly. Most of the guys in my class already have deacons in their parishes. In fact, one of the guys will be the 6 th deacon at his parish! The diaconate is a rapidly growing part of our Church. In 1975 there were 58,909 priests in the U.S. and 771 permanent deacons. In 2010 there were 39,993 priests in the U.S. and 16,699 permanent deacons. Have there ever been women deacons? Yes. What is the name of the first woman Deacon? Phoebe. see Romans 16:1 Do we have them now? No. Why not? There s not enough room in this article to answer that question.but suffice it to say that things in our Church are slowly changing. Who is the most famous Deacon in history? St. Francis of Assisi. Has there ever been a Pope who was a deacon? Yes, there have been several deacons who became Pope. I hope you found some of this information about the diaconate interesting.
