FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Do you love me? This is the question Jesus asked Peter in this 3 rd Sunday of Easter Gospel. Do you hear this same question Jesus is also asking you? Peter s reply was: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Can the Lord hear the same response from you? I feel this is the same question Jesus asks his priests and of course as a priest, I should give the same response every time Jesus asks me that question. But how do I show that I love him? By doing what he asked Peter to do, Feed my sheep. Bishop Daniel Walsh and Fr. Benedict Chang, both retired from active ministry had answered God s call to feed his sheep in their life as priests for 50 years and still counting. They both celebrated their 50 th Priestly Anniversary last weekend. Fr. Chang celebrated his anniversary last Saturday at Star of the Sea, where he once served as an associate priest. Bishop Walsh, the former bishop of the Diocese of Santo Rosa, celebrated his anniversary last Sunday at St. Anne s Church, his home parish where he was baptized, confirmed and celebrated his first mass and where is now in residence. Bishop Walsh had this special message on his anniversary: Pray and love your people. My former student in the seminary, Fr. Rex Familiar, is also celebrating his 20 th year anniversary as a priest this weekend in Orlando, Florida. Imagine I already have a student who is 20 years in the ministry. It does not mean you can also imagine how old I am. All I can say is that I still have 20 years to go before I retire like Bishop Walsh and Fr. Chang. An old priest was dying. He sent a message for a banker and a lawyer, both parishioners, to come to his home. They were ushered up to his bedroom in the rectory. The priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. Grasping their hands, he sighed contentedly, smiled, and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything. Both the banker and lawyer were flattered that the minister would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled; the preacher had never given them any indication that he particularly liked either of them. They both remembered his many uncomfortable sermons about greed, covetousness and avaricious behavior that made them squirm in their seats. Continued next column... FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Continued... Finally, the banker said, Father, why did you ask us to come? The old priest mustered up his strength and then said weakly, Jesus died between thieves, and that s how I want to go. Bankers and lawyers, this is just a joke, don t take it too seriously and personally. Remember, priests are always the ones called when people are dying. The priest could also be one of the thieves in your final moments. But if we love the Lord and feed the sheep of God, there will be no thieves in moments of death to surround us, only people full of love - loving, lovely and lovable people of God. Join Fr. Jerry Orbos for A Special Healing Mass Saturday, April 27, 2013 7:00-9:00 pm HOLY NAME OF JESUS, SAN FRANCISCO Who is Fr. Jerry? Born on October 1, 1953 in San Carlos, Pangasinan. Tony & Eleonor Frangos Grace Frontin Vera Hollands Shirley Hwe David & Teresa Lau John & Smitha Perumal Cecilia Quintanilla Michael Sarafian Deanna Sison Eddie & Christine Taniguchi The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: How are sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture linked together? Answer from Dei Verbum: Hence there exists a close connection and communication between sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For Sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the divine Spirit, while sacred tradition takes the word of God entrusted by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and hands it on to their successors in its full purity, so that led by the light of the Spirit of truth, they may in proclaiming it preserve this word of God faithfully, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently it is not from Sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore both sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same sense of loyalty and reverence. Editor s Note: We as Catholics know exactly which books belong in the Bible because of sacred tradition. It was in the late fourth century through a series of Church councils (beginning with the Council of Rome, in 382 AD) that the canon of scripture that we have today came to be determined. However, if you ask a Protestant how he or she knows that the 27 books of the New Testament really belong in the Bible, you ll probably get an answer along the lines of well, it s just obvious that these 27 books are divinely inspired. Well, what about all the other books that were present in the early centuries books like the Epistles of Clement, Ignatius of Antioch, and Polycarp, or the Gospel of Peter, Gospel of Thomas and the Protoevangelium of James? Many of these early writings were read during Mass at the time and have several of the same hallmarks as the 27 books in the New Testament. However, no Christian church today of any stripe (Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant) includes these early writings in its Bible. Why? Catholics and the Orthodox know (or at least should know), but a Protestant will come up short trying to answer. So what authority determined that early writings like the Epistle of Barnabas were not to be part of the Bible? Answer: It is by the Church s authority and through its divinely-guided councils that have given us the final canon of Scripture. Now this is sacred tradition at work!

Dear Holy Name Families, On Holy Thursday, March 28 th, some of the 7 th grade students reenacted an interpretation of the Stations of the Cross to the whole student body. On Good Friday, they acted out the Stations of the Cross for parishioners during the three-hour, Good Friday services. Thank you to Mrs. Melissa Eusebio who directed Jack McKie (Jesus), Emma Mitchell (Mary), Will Lin (Pontius Pilate), Malcolm Liu (Simon), Christine Dela Cruz (Veronica), Elizabeth Kirwan & Sophia Hapin (women), William Chen & Austin Thompson (thieves), Nathan Chow, Kieran Snow, Ty Rapoport, Nelson Beltran, Addy Miller & Brandon Lau (soldiers) and Elise Ng & Justin Michaels (narrators). Mrs. Eusebio staged the Stations of the Cross from costume preparation to the script and practiced with our students for many hours. She calmly directed them through the stations until each student took their part to heart. The result was a beautiful performance of the Stations of the Cross. Thank you again to Mrs. Eusebio, the students and Father Arnold, whose music accompaniment on piano greatly enhanced the production. Our 8 th grade students left Tuesday morning for Washington, D.C. with Mrs. Laura Miller, Mr. Dennis Dea and Mrs. Louisa Salas (Corrina 8A). The 8 th grade parents worked tirelessly to raise funds for this exciting field trip. We hope our students will be enriched by this experience. God bless our community and our Washington, D.C. travelers. Sincerely, CONGRATULATIONS & BEST WISHES TO Dr. George Emil Maloof & Mrs. Carol Ann Elliott, R.N.
