FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Hello to the holy season of Lent. We started our forty day Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, which was February 13 th. Upon hearing February 13 th, someone commented, so, Ash Wednesday falls on the 13 th this year; I m glad it s not Friday the 13 th. Huh? It s like asking what day is Ash Wednesday. Love comes after Ash Wednesday with the celebration of Valentines Day. And the celebration of Chinese New 2013 Year of the Snake continues with the Chinese New Year s Potluck at the Gym this weekend. Many events happened this week, but the biggest news was the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI due to his age and deteriorating health. By next month we should have a new pope. We are all asked to pray during this time of papal transition as we unite our prayers in support of the Cardinals as they select our new Vicar for Christ. There were two Catholic boys, Timothy Murphy and Antonio Secola, whose lives parallel each other in amazing ways. In the same year Timothy was born in Ireland, Secola was born in Italy. Faithfully they attended parochial school from kindergarten through their senior year in high school. They took their vows to enter the priesthood early in college, and upon graduation, became priests. Their careers had come to amaze the world, but it was generally acknowledged that Secola was just a cut above Timothy in all respects. Their rise through the ranks of Bishop, Archbishop and Cardinal was amazing. The Catholic world knew that when the present Pope died, it would be one of the two who would become the next Pope. In time the Pope did die, and the College of Cardinals went to work. In less time than anyone had expected, white smoke rose from the chimney and the world waited to see whom they had chosen. The world, Catholic, Protestant and secular were surprised to learn that Timothy Murphy had been elected Pope! Antonio Secola was beyond surprise. He was devastated, because even with all of Timothy s gifts, Antonio knew he was the better qualified. With gall that shocked the Cardinals, Antonio Secola asked for a private session with them in which he candidly asked, Why Timothy? After a long silence, an old Cardinal took pity on the bewildered man and rose to reply. We knew you were the better of the two, but we could not bear the thought of the leader of the Roman Catholic Church being called Pope Secola. Don t Forget! The Youth Group meets every 1st and 3rd Sunday after the 9:30 AM Mass. The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: How can the call to holiness affect marriage and parenthood? Answer from Lumen Gentium: Furthermore, married couples and Christian parents should follow their own proper path (to holiness) by faithful love. They should sustain one another in grace throughout the entire length of their lives. They should embue their offspring, lovingly welcomed as God's gift, with Christian doctrine and the evangelical virtues. In this manner, they offer all men the example of unwearying and generous love; in this way they build up the brotherhood of charity; in so doing, they stand as the witnesses and cooperators in the fruitfulness of Holy Mother Church; by such lives, they are a sign and a participation in that very love, with which Christ loved His Bride and for which He delivered Himself up for her. Question: What gift is deemed first and necessary when answering the call to holiness? Answer from Lumen Gentium: "God is love, and he who abides in love, abides in God and God in Him". But, God pours out his love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, Who has been given to us; thus the first and most necessary gift is love, by which we love God above all things and our neighbor because of God. Question: How can the call to holiness affect our daily work? Answer from Lumen Gentium: Finally, those who engage in labor and frequently it is of a heavy nature should better themselves by their human labors. They should be of aid to their fellow citizens. They should raise all of society, and even creation itself, to a better mode of existence. Indeed, they should imitate by their lively charity, in their joyous hope and by their voluntary sharing of each others' burdens, the very Christ who plied His hands with carpenter's tools and Who in union with His Father, is continually working for the salvation of all men. In this, then, their daily work they should climb to the heights of holiness and apostolic activity. Editor s Note: It certainly has been a big news week with regards to the Church. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has made a historical decision to resign from the papal office. The Pope said he made his decision after having repeatedly examined my conscience before God. This revelation further reminds me that prayer is of the utmost value before making the big decisions in life. And prayer before even the minor decisions should be encouraged, as well! We often find ourselves drawn to dig deeper into our Catholic faith. You are encouraged to explore more at: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ At the Vatican s website, you ll find a wealth of free and complete Catholic resources including the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon law and the entirety of the Second Vatican Council.

HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Families, A huge thank you to Miss Anna Rivieccio and Mrs. Rita Nolan for organizing this year s wonderful Caritas Creek. It really does take months of preparation to be sure that everything is in place for a week of outdoor education. Many parents went this year as chaperones and had a wonderful time. I heard through the grapevine that the camp directors thought our parents were the absolute best. Thank you Mrs. Bronia Leung (Elise Ng 7A), Mr. Erik Rapoport (Ty 7B), Mr. Charles Lau (Gabby 7B), Mr. Robert Hui (Jennifer 7B), Mrs. Ana Rosario (Tifany 7B), Mrs. Tina Siu (Tianna 7B) and Miss Kathy Johnson (aunt of Angelika 7A) for giving up your time and being totally involved with the students while at camp. Our 7 th grade students had a great time, too. They enthusiastically joined in the many activities provided for them, were kind to each other and enjoyed being with Miss Rivieccio, Mrs. Nolan and their parents. It was an outstanding week because of each of them. Thank you to our Librarian, Mrs. Kristine Choy, for bringing S.S. Taylor, author of The Expeditioners, to our school. Students in grades 3-6 met with Ms. Taylor and some are already reading her adventure novel. God bless you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos LIBRARY CORNER Thank you to Megan Yau in Kindergarten for donating a book to Holy Name's Birthday Book Club! Happy Birthday, Megan! TICKETS NOW ON SALE!
