FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora The Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes wrote The trouble with hello is goodbye. I want to reverse the order and say it in a more positive way that in every goodbye comes hello. First of all, we say goodbye to the month of July and now we say hello to August. Well, in fact, every day we experience this exchange of hellos and goodbyes. Our greeting of Good Morning is our hello to the new day. Our goodnight could be goodbye to the day that has been. Then another day comes again to say hello. Last Sunday, we had a farewell mass for Fr. Edward Inyanwachi whom we exchanged hellos with some years ago and who is going back to Nigeria to continue his priestly ministry. We exchanged our goodbyes for now, but I am sure there is also a welcome hello that s waiting for him in his home country. This weekend we welcome and exchange hellos with Sr. Necy Guan, FdCC, who is taking the place of Sr. Stella as our new pastoral associate. I had the privilege of working with Sr. Necy when I was assigned in St. Brendan s Parish before I came to Holy Name. I am excited to have her here at Holy Name, because I know how much she can do and the many gifts that she has to offer to us. Pope Francis really made big waves in Rio de Janeiro with his apostolic visit in Brazil and World Youth Day. The seventysix year old youth was able to gather 3,500,000 young people on a beach. According to the press, he did so not only with his words, but especially with the signs of his humanity and spirituality. He not only touched the lives of the people who came to World Youth Day, but all the people in the whole world as well. Those people could re-echo Sergio Mendes song as they part with each other. Enthusiastically, people welcomed him and inspired, they also said goodbye to him. With people coming and going into our lives, I just thought of sharing these quotes: Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same. (Unknown) All along your life, people come and go. Some hurt you, some make you smile, but each one of them leaves something of theirs with us. The new lessons they teach us, the new aspects of life they show us, making us better equipped to face the world- much stronger. (Unknown) Indeed, some people come, some people go. People lose, people gain. I lose some hair, but I gained some face. I said goodbye to the vertical growth of my body many years ago. Now I keep saying hello to my horizontal growth. I have tried hard to say goodbye to my tummy, but we are just so attached to one another. Let go of those extra calories in your bodies, gain some spiritual calories by attaching yourself always to Christ. The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Ques on: Why is ac ve par cipa on in the liturgy important for us, the faithful? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: But in order that the liturgy may be able to produce its full effects, it is necessary that the faithful come to it with proper disposi ons, that their minds should be a uned to their voices, and that they should cooperate with divine grace lest they receive it in vain. Pastors of souls must therefore realize that, when the liturgy is celebrated, something more is required than the mere observa on of the laws governing valid and licit celebra on; it is their duty also to ensure that the faithful take part fully aware of what they are doing, ac vely engaged in the rite, and enriched by its effects. Ques on: Is going to Mass deemed solely sufficient for a Chris an? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: The spiritual life, however, is not limited solely to par cipa on in the liturgy. The Chris an is indeed called to pray with his brethren, but he must also enter into his chamber to pray to the Father, in secret; yet more, according to the teaching of the Apostle, he should pray without ceasing. We learn from the same Apostle that we must always bear about in our body the dying of Jesus, so that the life also of Jesus may be made manifest in our bodily frame. This is why we ask the Lord in the sacrifice of the Mass that, "receiving the offering of the spiritual vic m," he may fashion us for himself "as an eternal gi ". Ques on: What condi ons are made on popular devo ons (e.g., Rosary, Sta ons of the Cross, Novena of Grace, Divine Mercy Novena, Litany of the Saints, etc.)? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Popular devo ons of the Chris an people are to be highly commended, provided they accord with the laws and norms of the Church, above all when they are ordered by the Apostolic See. Devo ons proper to individual Churches also have a special dignity if they are undertaken by mandate of the bishops according to customs or books lawfully approved. But these devo ons should be so drawn up that they harmonize with the liturgical seasons, accord with the sacred liturgy, are in some fashion derived from it, and lead the people to it, since, in fact, the liturgy by its very nature far surpasses any of them Editor s Note: This week we con nue to explore Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy), which has as its central aim a focus on greater par cipa on of the laity in the liturgy. We are reviewing the cons tu on s first chapter, The Nature of the Sacred Liturgy and Its Importance in the Church's Life.
