The mystery of salvation in Christ is not a mystery that is solved, but a reality beyond our comprehension that we must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter into the mystery: God waits, Adam and Eve and all the souls of the dead who long for paradise wait, angels wait for new heavenly companions. And there is much rejoicing when her decision is yes. We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but the mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no means solved. We may understand it a bit better due to Mary s yes. We may be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But it still remains a mystery to which we all must give our own yes. Soon we will be singing O come, let us adore him. May our Advent prayer, our echo of Mary s yes, continue then, so we may enter into the mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ, God among us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Fourth Sunday of Advent - December 21, 2014 Of course, we celebrate this week the Feast of Christmas. Let me remind you of a few things about our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day schedule. On Wednesday morning, December 24, there is a Mass at 7:30 a.m. in The Gathering Place trailer. This is the regular Morning Mass and will be the Mass for Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Advent the last Advent Mass of the season. Thus it is NOT a Christmas Mass and attendance does not fulfill the Christmas obligation. On that same day, Wednesday, December 24, we switch to the Christmas Eve mode with the celebration of five Masses on Christmas Eve evening: 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (that is MIDNIGHT MASS). ALL these Masses will be crowded; so I suggest that you arrive much earlier than usual. Normally, the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve is THE MOST CROWDED; it is traditionally called The Children s Mass and it will be packed, standing room only, with lots and lots of children. And, these children will be excited, hyper, fidgety and talkative. So, if that s not what you re wanting to experience, I recommend attending any of the other scheduled Masses. Deacon Dan Powers will be assisting me at this Mass and will be delivering the homily FOR CHILDREN! It s a delightful celebration, but again very crowded and high energy, so be ready OR go to another Mass. Lol. The next four Masses ( 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. and the 12:00 a.m. MIDNIGHT MASS) will be crowded as well, but usually not as much as the 4:00 p.m. I still would recommend arriving early so that you get a good seat; I don t think that they will be standing room only, but you never can tell as we are a more largely populated parish than we were a year ago. And, yes the MIDNIGHT MASS will be at 12:00 a.m. exactly! I find it amusing when people ask What time is Midnight Mass? I used to say when both hands are on the number 12, but with digital clocks, some people may not understand that reference. And, I do realize that in some parishes, the MIDNIGHT MASS starts at 11:30 p.m. or at other churches the last Christmas Eve Mass may be at 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. (but still be referred to symbolically as MIDNIGHT Mass maybe thinking of middle of the night ). Anyway, here at Holy Spirit the MIDNIGHT MASS will be exactly at 12:00 a.m. sharp! (both hands on 12). On Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25, we have only one Mass at 10:00 a.m. We have found that with so many people attending the four Masses on Christmas Eve that only one Mass is necessary on Christmas Day itself. It, too, will be crowded, so arriving early is a good idea. I hope to see many of you at one of our Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Masses. I look forward to sharing those Masses not only with you, but with other family members, relatives and friends who might join you. At those Masses, I will, of course, extend to you my prayers and blessings for a Holy and Merry Christmas and a Blessed and Happy New Year. If you are traveling out of town for the Christmas holiday and/or New Year s Eve/Day, then, I now wish you safe travels, a wonderful time with family and friends, memorable adventures wherever you are going and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 2014 years ago, the angels announced to the shepherds of Bethlehem Peace on earth. May you enjoy the peace that only God can give during this Christmas season and throughout 2015! God bless us everyone! by Allison Lambert When I signed up to go on the mission trip with Deacon John, Fr. Bill, and the other parishioners of Holy Spirit, I never thought it would impact me as much as it did. From the first night we arrived at the Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica the feeling of faith, peace, and love overcame all of us. We were able to meet so many caring people who take such good care of the residents who live at the Mustard Seed Comminutes. I have so many joyful memories and unforgettable moments from the week: whether it was the children with mild and severe disabilities at Sophie s Place that we fed every morning and night, the young mothers and soon to be mothers at Mary s Child, the children and teens living with HIV, or the adults with disabilities who have been living at Jerusalem and Jacob s Ladder for their whole lives, one thing is definite ~ I learned to accept people for who they are ~ who God made them. The residents of the Mustard Seed Communities are not rich with money or belongings but they are very rich in faith, love, and friendship. And it shows in every face you see and every hand you hold. I can t wait to go back! December 14 - December 23, 2014 BACKGROUND: In the Philippines, these Novena Masses are celebrated early in the morning 4-5 AM or in the evening 6-7PM. It is also called Misa de Gallo (Mass when the cock crows) or Misa de Aguinaldo. This is a very much desired Filipino religious tradition. Back home families wake up early, attend Mass and fill many churches. After the liturgy, delicious Filipino food and delicacies are served and shared by families. Thus this becomes both a religious and social gathering. SCHEDULE OF DATES, TIME & PLACES: 1. Dec. 14, Sun: 5:00PM St. Francis of Assisi, 2300 Sunridge Heights Pkwy, Henderson NV 2.
