(Closed Sundays) JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

4 First The Nativity Sunday of St. Advent John - the December Baptist 3, June , 2018 Where do I begin? is the title of a popular song (sung by Andy Williams) that was first featured as an instrumental in the movie Love Story (1970). Those words, Where do I begin? are exactly my sentiments on this first Sunday in our new church building -- with this beautiful feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist -- one of my favorite saints. So, Where do I begin? Well, first of all, I must begin by giving thanks and praise to God! As I spoke in the homily for last Sunday, when I said yes to Bishop Joseph Pepe s request in May of 2007 to start a new parish, I had no idea what would follow that yes. But, thanks be to God, this has been one of the most exciting ten and a half years of my life! I have no doubts that the Holy Spirit has guided me, the staff of Holy Spirit, our volunteers and all of our parishioners in this marvelous journey of faith! So, again, thank you, God! To you belong all the honor and glory! Like a loving parent, you, God, our Father, have watched over us and made us into a family of believers. Jesus, you are our brother: each week we listen to your words in Scripture and are strengthened and nourished at the table with your Body and Blood. Most of all, Holy Spirit, you are our guide, our mentor, our support, our advocate, our friend. Praise to you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit for all that has been and all that has yet to come. Next, I am so grateful to the staff that has helped me, guided me, corrected me through these years. Without you (those now on staff and former staff members), we would not be celebrating this great milestone in our parish history. Your work, your energy, your creativity have helped immensely in making this happen. We are on the threshold of a whole new chapter: may we continue to pray together, work together, play together and serve all those who belong now and will belong in the future to this wonderful parish known as Holy Spirit Catholic Church Community. And, of course, without a community, without our weekend worshipping assemblies, without our parishioners, without our volunteers, we would just be spinning our wheels, wasting our time. YOU are Holy Spirit Catholic Church Community! Your support, your patience, your generosity in time, talent and treasure have made this dream come true! Thank you seems so inadequate. I m sure many of you wondered if this church building would ever truly materialize; but you stayed with the project and here we are in this beautiful church: God s House, Our Home. Finally, thanks to our architectural firm, JVC and it s owner, Jim VanCompernolle; to our construction company, Bentar Development and it s owner, Chi Chi Bengochea; Thanks to our artists: John Nava for the tapestries and Artisanos Don Bosco for most of our church furnishings. Come, Holy Spirit! NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation For All Losses New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of loss and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful and meaningful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) ADULTS: This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. Individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. Bereaved individuals will receive resources and an opportunity to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CHILDREN: This support group or 1:1 meeting with a compassionate and trained grief facilitator will offer resources and teach coping skills. Contact: Connie Theisen DIVORCE MINISTRY This workshop guided by divorced Christians uses discussion materials from the Divorce Recovery Workbook to offer support for divorced individuals. To my Holy Spirit family - I want to say thank you for such an amazing, joyfilled 4 years together. This community has touched my heart in so many ways - your generosity, kindness and hospitality are unmatched! Your enthusiastic love of God and each other is so apparent every time we gather; I know it will continue in each of you as we move into our long-awaited church home.
