Psalm O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Second Reading The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). Gospel Recognizing the Canaanite woman s great faith, Jesus told her, It shall be done as you wish (Matthew 15:21-28). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed for lunch 12:00 1:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m.-12 Noon p.m. CALLED TO ACT IN GOD S NAME Let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67:4) today s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone not just the Chosen People to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a put up or shut up challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with Behold! (Matthew 15:22) Behold! is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. 4 This is a reprint from the July 18, 2014 Blog of St Mary s parish in Derby, Kansas. I thought it was a wonderful sharing and testimony of how and why we do Full Immersion Baptisms during our weekend liturgies. Baptism: A Celebration of Family and Community Our grandson Van was baptized at Mass on July 6. My husband Jim and I traveled to Las Vegas to share with our extended family in the celebration. Father Bill presided over both the Baptism and the Mass. He had also married Van s parents (our son Brad and his wife Brittany), baptized Brittany and her brother Zach (Van s Godfather), married Brittany s parents, and was Chaplain at Brittany s high school, so there is a close relationship. Baptism was at Holy Spirit, a small parish that meets on the Bishop Gorman High School campus. Similar to our transitional worship space, the Holy Spirit community currently worships in a temporary space, the school commons, as the campus continues to grow. One of the accommodations of the space was the fact that Father Bill sat next to Van and his parents during select portions of the Mass. As Mass progressed, Nana Judy spread the corporal upon the altar; and Grandpa Jim and I presented the gifts, and later served as Altar Servers. Van s big moment came when he was completely submerged in the Baptismal font, then swaddled in a fluffy white towel, and carried high by Father Bill to each section of the congregation for their approval and welcome. It was a Lion King moment, and I ll admit, a few tears rolled down my cheeks. Upon returning to his seat with Van, Father saw my tears and remarked, It is emotional. Summer Outreach project to benefit the children of The Outreach Committee needs help filling backpacks for the children going back to school in the fall. Backpacks & school supplies will be collected in August at Mass. If you can fill a backpack with school supplies, that would be great! These are some ideas Lined paper, pencils, erasers, rulers, crayons, washable markers, glue sticks, scissors (student size), stick pens, House Blessings Parishioners may request a house blessing by contacting the parish office. You will be contacted by Deacon John or Deacon Dan. Whether my grandchild or someone else s, Baptism should always be an emotionally-charged moment. It is the pivotal moment when a child enters into the light; when God puts His seal upon this person, whether a baby or adult; when parents and Godparents accept the responsibility to train this magnificent gift from God in the faith and help them grow to their God-given potential. It is an amazing moment, one we often take for granted, thanks to the faith of our parents before us. Van s Baptism was truly a moment of Grace, not just for the DeGarmo and VanCleve families, but for all who shared in the Sacrament that morning, and for all who will continue to participate in Van s lifelong journey of faith formation. Baptism is a special moment, a sacrament instituted to confer grace by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the beginning of a journey, a partnership between family and worshipping community, and for that I remain grateful. -Laurie DeGarmo Page 4 St. Anne Catholic School Openings in lower grades St. Anne Catholic School has limited openings in its lower grades, Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade. 5 NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. Contact: Susie Cram Catechesis of the Good Shepherd The first class starts September 4th Why does my child have to walk on a line? Small children lack fine motor skills and controlled movement, so the young child in the atrium partakes in activities to help build these skills. Being still is a major undertaking in the atrium, walking on a line holding something requires concentration they are just starting to master. (Montessori activities) This is an activity that you can do at home. Lay down a rope or tape on the floor, hands at your side and walk slow. Carry a tray with something on it. Help create the quiet. The first mass gesture that the child will do is Preparation of the Cruets a 3 year old needs to learn to pour and pour so it doesn t go everywhere. So when you child starts to pour, ask them to use a two finger pour and let them show you Also, if we have someone that could sew a simple white baptismal gown for us, could you please contact me thank you. The format of the Edge program is designed to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of your middle school youth. The Edge Nights allow the youth to learn about their faith through talks, skits, videos, small group discussions and sharing what they know with their friends. As part of the Catholic Church s mission to evangelize, middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to the Edge. At Holy Spirit, the Edge program is for those in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Having three grades helps provide a positive transition for sixth graders, a year of development for seventh graders, and a year to be a role model for the eighth graders. Edge is open to all those in middle school even though who already participate in Catholic Education at School. Those who attend Catholic Schools are also encouraged to attend Edge. Edge sessions focus on the spiritual life of a middle school youth. They are based on Formation, not merely education. We are now taking registrations for the K-5 Religious Education Program for holyspiritreligiouseducation.blogspot.com reled@holyspiritlv.org Dear Religious Education Families, Hello and welcome to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Religious Education Program! As you are undoubtedly aware by now, our programs have undergone some significant changes from last year to this year, and we are pleased to be able to present and explain some of the highlights at this time: **All Religious Education classes are now held on SUNDAY mornings between the 10AM Mass and the soon-to-be-moved 12:30 PM Mass.** Classes will be held at Bishop Gorman High School (BGHS) starting at 11:15 AM and ending at 12:15 PM. The reasons for this change are numerous, including (1) ease of BGHS facility use on Sunday compared to weekday nights, (2) common weeknight schedule conflicts on the part of both families and teachers, (3) students who are tired after long days of school on weekdays, (4) the convenience of a single trip to BGHS for Mass and class as opposed to two trips per week, (5) traditional Sunday School association for families. Sacramental Preparation to be included in regular Sunday class. Although Sacramental Preparation remains a twoyear program at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, no longer will students need to attend two separate classes during a Sacramental Year. Rather, students who are eligible to receive Sacraments (students must be baptized, in their second year of Religious Education and at-or-above Second Grade level) will be grouped together in gradelevel preparation classes where they will learn both the regular Religious Education curriculum, as well as the Sacramental Preparation curriculum. Students who are not in Sacramental Preparation years will be grouped in classes with other students not preparing for Sacraments. Registration forms are available at Mass or in the parish office. There is a parent information form enclosed that has the class schedule for the year, as well as other important information.
