The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance ("darkness") and sin (the "yoke"). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of Christ's party." The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today's Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies. The theme is "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 4:17). Baptisms classes are held on the 2ND MONDAY of each month at 7:00 PM in the parish office trailer (located behind Gorman next to the tennis courts). All baptisms at Holy Spirit take place during regular weekend liturgies. For children over 7: Contact Anna Forsberg, Director of Religious Education, for info on a special program for older unbaptized children. 1st Communion: Child must be registered in Religious Education at Holy Spirit. Registration packets are available in the office or at Mass. First Communion is a two-year program, beginning as early as first grade. Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on Feb. 11/12.

4 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 22, 2017 Since I write this column early Tuesday morning, I don t, of course, have knowledge of what will have transpired on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday that might be of importance by the weekend. So, sometimes, my news in this column might be sketchy (if I don t have enough info by Tuesday) or old (if something happened on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and I write about it on a Tuesday and you read it on the following Sunday which would be ten days later!) So, one solution is that I will try to return to a practice I started a few years ago, but things got too busy and I just stopped doing it. It was my weekly entitled 6Ws which stood for something like Will s Wonderful Words of Wit and Wisdom on Wednesdays. But Wednesdays are still three days before the weekend. So, I m going to return to a weekly message on Fridays with the latest pre-weekend news. So, that means that you need to make sure that we have your and/or that is has been updated. Actually, however, we have a very high percentage of registered parishioners for whom we have an address. Of the 2,622 families who are currently registered with Holy Spirit, 2,403 families (92%) have given us an contact; that means that only 219 families either do not use at all or haven t given us their contact. There are many ways to let us know what your or updated is: 1. Call the office at 702-HLY-SPRT ( ) 2. Send an to Yvonne at yvonnek@holyspiritlv.org 3. I also have been using our APP s Push Notification feature to send messages to 1,301 persons (763 on I-phones and 538 on androids). Of course, I m limited to 128 characters. If you want to receive these brief notices, just sign up for the APP as indicated at the very bottom of page 2, left hand column. BTW, our website ( has received a little update from the company who manages our website; it looks a little bit cleaner. Several of our staff members are also working on the looks of the website and APP and trying to improve it. Keep checking it out and let us know what you think and how we can improve it and, in general, our communications with you our parishioners. Have a good week! Collection for the Church in Latin America Next Week Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the Church in the United States with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. For people living in these regions, barriers to practicing the faith include lack of resources, shortages of pastoral agents, and poor infrastructures that make relatively simple things like participating in weekly Mass difficult. Your support of the collection helps to share the faith with those who long to experience God s mercy within strong faith communities. For example, in northern Peru, great distances and deteriorated roads mean that church agents must often travel by foot or mule to rural communities. As a result, some communities are visited by pastoral agents and ministers only once per month, others sometimes just twice per year. The Collection for the Church in Latin America was able to help fund training for 65 pastoral ministers for the communities in this region. Because of your support, these new leaders continue to reach out and serve the rural communities, ensuring that all feel included in our family of faith. Our diocese takes up this collection the weekend of January 28 and 29, Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. In fact, in a letter to Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and the entire Catholic community in the United States, Pope Francis commended the work of the collection, saying, Through your support, many lives have been touched by the Good News of Christ s merciful love, especially for the poor.
