Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading Live as wise persons trying to understand what is the will of the Lord, filled with the Spirit and giving thanks always (Ephesians 5:15-20). Gospel Jesus says, I am the living bread... whoever eats this bread (my flesh) will live forever (John 6:51-58). OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed for lunch 12:00 1:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m.-12 Noon p.m. AT THE TABLE In today s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her temple like home. She doesn t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom s table. There they may and can eat and drink deeply. Today s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God s will and act on it. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 16, 2015 Sometimes I have been called a tekkie priest! Great! I m proud to be up on most of the latest technology. I do have an I-phone, I-pad and, of course, a computer at work and one at home. So, this column is all about using technology here at Holy Spirit. Do you know that we have an APP? If you have a smart phone, you can go to the lower left hand corner of page 2 of this bulletin and scan the logo there. Or you can go to your App Store or similar place and search for Holy Spirit, Las Vegas and you can download the APP. I think it s a very attractive and practical APP Try it. Of course, we do have our own website, too: our web address is www.holyspiritlv.org. Now the APP and the website are synched to each other, but not identical. As a staff, we all try to keep both of these up-to-date. If you have suggestions, please let me know. I m open to new ideas, links, improvements etc. Both the App and the website have lots of important and useful information: parish calendars, Mass schedule and presiders, ALL the bulletins, the ENTIRE Bible, daily readings for Sunday and weekday Masses, Liturgy of the Hours, common Catholic prayers, several Catholic magazines, a link to the Diocese of Las Vegas website as well as the United States Catholic Bishops, the Vatican and Pope Francis websites and much more! On both the APP and the website, you can register for the parish DIRECTLY and your registration is sent electronically to us. (You can also download the APP from our website.) NOW is the time for all parents to register your children in our Religious Education programs. Most of them can be downloaded from our parish website; here s a quick reference: 1) for kindergarten through 5th grades www.holyspiritlv.org/k-5th-grade 2) for 6th through 8th grades (middle school) www.holyspiritlv.org/edge-middle-school-ministry.html 3) for 9th through 12 grades (high school) www.holyspiritlv.org/confirmation In this age of technology, you can also contribute financially (tithe). You can arrange with your own financial institution (bank or credit union) to have checks automatically and regularly mailed* to us by way of billpay or something similar. On our website and APP, you can go to the link Pay Now to have donations deposited directly into our own bank account. You choose the amount and the regularity of your donations (weekly, monthly, etc.); you can select amounts for special collections and for Christmas and Easter. You can also make your pledge payments through this same system. These methods insure that you give regularly even when you don t attend Mass because of illness, travel or other situations which take you away from us. Technology! Gotta love it! * Remember our NEW address: 5830 Mesa Park Drive, LV, NV 89135. Page 4 Erin Fitzpatrick Because I had never been on a mission trip before, I had no idea what to expect when I went with my mother and sister to the Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica. I assumed we would just help out the staff and do what was asked of our team. However, I was proven wrong. This was more than just a mission trip; it was a life changing journey. On this journey, I was constantly being taught by the staff and the residents of Mustard Seed. I did not know it was possible to gain so much inspirational insight in just one week. I learned that a young girl, who could barely walk, could fill my heart with joy simply with her singing voice and hugs. I learned that the true heroes of our world are the aunties, those who dedicate their lives to serving and taking care of these broken and sick residents. I learned that even though these residents are physically or mentally challenged, their faith and joy are full of richness that never fades. I have changed because of this trip. I have gained the courage and confidence to act in the way of love. Before this trip, I would have never thought that I could bond with a pregnant twelve year old over hairstyles or that I could make a boy smile who was diagnosed with HIV. I had no idea I could become so attached to the children we would feed almost every morning and night. When they smiled, I smiled. When they cried, I cried. I felt connected in their joy and in their suffering. I will miss the residents every day, but I know one day I will return to serve and care for them. I have grown in my faith and in my fortitude. I am no longer afraid to follow the Greatest Commandment; to love one another. The emotional and spiritual rewards gained from this trip will stay in my heart forever. I will always be thankful for these memories and for the people of the Mustard Seed Communities. God bless all of the past, present, and future missionaries!
