Page 2 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 23, 2018 BLESSING OF CHRISTMAS DINNER Light the candles. Some begin the meal with a loaf of festive bread, broken, dipped in honey, and shared with wishes and kisses for a sweet Christmas season. An empty place may be left at the table to welcome in spirit all who cannot be there a place set for Christ! You might put a little straw/hay under the table or its cloth for we have made our homes a new Bethlehem (a word which means the house of bread ) where Christ is born. Begin or end grace w/a carol. God great gentleness, in love you give us this Christmas feast to be our joy and delight. Hold us close to each other. Unite us in spirit with those who have died and with those who are distant. Gather all your children in Bethlehem, where we will join with Mary and Joseph, with the angels, with the cattle and the sheep, and with all the stars of heaven in singing your praise: Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever. Amen. (LTP, Archdiocese of Chicago) TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-december were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gi giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ADVENT REFLECTION: MAGNIFICAT As noted last week Mary s response to Elizabeth s greeting has been known through the ages as the Magnificat, her Song of Praise. The canticle is inspired by the prayer of Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel, in the Hebrew Scriptures (I Sam 2:1-10) Mary declares God s greatness and rejoices in God her Savior. Acknowledging her humble stance before the Lord she praises the greatness of all He has done. She speaks of unheard of reversals of divine history where the strength and power of the Almighty bring low human pride, might and wealth; where the poor and lowly are exalted and those who are hungry (physically and spiritually) are filled with good things. Mary acclaims God s mercy and love and how he never forgets to be merciful, and she declares that God is forever faithful in fulfilling the promise he made to Abraham and his descendants. In these aforementioned ways we discover some of the major themes of St. Luke s Gospel. If God remains faithful and remembers across the years his promise of mercy, should we not also always remember his mercy and never let it slip from our awareness? God ever-faithful and true, help our forgetful hearts to remember the constancy of your mercy. When we feel lost and alone, stir within us a sense of your unfailing merciful presence. Amen. (Rejoicing in Mercy: A Prayer Commentary on the Gospel of Luke by Fr. Louis J. Cameli) BLESSING OF THE CRECH OR NATIVITY SCENE We praise you, Lord God of all creation, for you have brought us to this season of rejoicing and have given us the story of the birth of Jesus. Through all the days of Christmas may these figures tell that story and may this home be with hospitality, joy, gentleness, and thanksgiving to you. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. (Then sing a Christmas carol)

We celebrate it every year. Have you ever stopped to think about the deeper meaning or what does it mean? Although we Chris ans and even non Chris ans have heard the story of Jesus s birth, it s real significance may be missed because of so many external factors. It was not an ordinary birth but it was the birth of an unique and profound person in history. Son of God becoming man. It is a profound gi to humanity, to you and me. Let this celebra on of the birth of Jesus Christ in 2018 be a unique and special one to each of us. May Jesus be reborn in our hearts. I extend to you all my warm wishes. Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year. 2019 Fr. Carlos
Page 5 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 23, 2018 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE Every year around this time, we gather to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Just as Jesus came to our world with a message of love, let Christmas time be an occasion to enjoy the love of family, friends & well-wishers and extend our love wishes even to those who do not find favor with us, to let them know that we care about them. As your Pastor, I extend my wishes for this beautiful celebration of coming together in fellowship to celebrate Christ s birth. May our hearts be lifted in praise this Christmas for the wonderful gift of Jesus and the joy He brings to our lives! Love makes all things beautiful because God is love. I wish you and your families the wonderful season of Christmas filled with God s love. Let us spread the good news of his birth by our deeds of love towards our brothers and sisters and our needy brethren, just as God the Father gave his Son Jesus as a gift to us.
