Third Sunday 2 December 16, 2018 A message from Father Joseph: Time to change to have real joy Dear Friends, We now enter the Third Week This Sunday is called Gaudete Sunday, Rejoice Sunday The mood of this Sunday is joyful and celebrating Words such as Joy, Rejoice, Joyfully, Sing, Shout, and Cry Out are mentioned nearly 30 times This mood of joy is also reflected in the lighting of the Advent candle of rose color, through the rose chasuble the priest wears, and in the hymns and prayers We rejoice and celebrate because we re approaching the birthday of Jesus The salvation of humanity has finally come In the second reading, Paul exhorts the Philippians to be joyful and to pray to be free from anxiety and full of peaceful thanksgiving Paul says: "Rejoice in the Lord always I shall say it again: rejoice!" Remember Paul wrote these words to the Philippians from Roman prison, under guard, where his life was in imminent danger How can Paul find joy, peace, and gratitude in his imprisonment and imminent danger? The answer is that Paul knew the Lord was near and that his mind and heart were guarded by the peace of God We know true joy and change go hand in hand If we don t change, we will live in the old way and we may not have real joy Also, the change on the outside will not give us lasting joy, but the change in the inside does: the way of thinking, the tendency of the heart, and the ability to accept the reality This inner change will give us joy and make us young This is what John the Baptist showed, through his words and deeds, how to have a new life and to rejoice This is what he also showed the people who came and asked him what to do John asked them to change their ways of life and to practice love and justice Third Sunday is the time to change and renew It's the time to know how old we are in our own way of thinking and acting, the way we behave toward God, ourselves, and others It s time to realize what is going on in our lives It s time to open our hearts and minds for the message of love and hope, joy and peace of Jesus Christ In this process of changing, pain is necessary, but joy will follow Those who are afraid of pain cannot change and cannot have the real joy We are asked to change in order to be fitting to the Gospel of Jesus As we pray in the season : O come, O come, Emmanuel! We should ask ourselves: What would be the thing I decide to change in order that I make myself young and rejoice in Jesus coming?
