Second Sunday 2 December 9, 2018 Dear Friends, A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JOSEPH This Sunday s Gospel begins with a solemn introduction In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, etc something momentous is about to happen We may think that this was the announcement of the birth of Jesus But it isn t Yet the event that is announced is earthshaking The event is this: The Word of the Lord came to John the Baptist Then, John went proclaiming a baptism of repentance and calling people to prepare the way of the Lord The word of God came to John the Baptist The Word of the Lord also comes to each of us everyday God calls us to share the mission of John: preparing the way for the Lord God gives us a significant part of the process even if our particular action might seem trivial To fulfill our call and mission, we are to prepare ourselves as John the Baptist did So, let us take opportunities offered us during this season and make our hearts ready for the Lord First, let us spend some time each day to deepen our prayer life Daytime is shorter and nighttime is longer Spend more time to read and reflect on the Scriptures and to pray Prayer life would help us to see more clearly our call of discipleship: loving God, loving others, and building God s kingdom on earth Secondly, let us take the opportunity to receive the Sacraments, especially the Sacrament of Reconciliation Advent is the time to prepare the way for the Lord by reconciling with Him and with others Eight priests will be present to hear our confession this Sunday (Dec 9) at 4 PM at Ss Mary and Joseph Church Also, you may check the bulletin for more information of communal penance services in our deanery Or you can call the office for a confession a time convenient for you May the Lord continue to bless you and fill your hearts with his peace and joy as you focus on preparing his way through prayer and Sacraments Peace and Joy in Jesus the Lord DEANERY SCHEDULE COMMUNAL PENANCE Date Time Church Location December 9 1:00 pm St John Houghton 2:30 pm St Mary West Point 4:00 pm Ss Mary & Joseph Fort Madison December 15 10:00 am St John Burlington 11:30 am St Boniface Farmington December 17 6:30 pm All Saints Keokuk December 18 7:00 pm St Alphonsus Mt Pleasant ALTAR SERVER CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Christmas Party for all Altar Servers is scheduled for Saturday, December 15th All servers, youth and Knights of Columbus, and their families/spouses, are invited to attend The party will be held at the Rectory It will begin after the 4:00 pm Mass As last year, we will have pizza, drinks, games, and prizes Last year was well attended and was enjoyed by all Please RSVP to the parish office, 372-2127, so we can make sure we have enough pizza, drinks, and prizes We ll have different games, but just as fun, as last year YOUTH MINISTRY The new Youth Ministry group will begin meeting on a regular basis beginning this Sunday, December 9th, after the 10:30 Mass The group will gather every Sunday at McAleer Hall at this time All parish youth, 12-18, are encouraged and invited to attend There will be snacks, faith formation games, fun, and fellowship Looking forward to seeing you there!
