Pentecost Sunday 2 May 20, 2018 A MESSAGE FROM FR JOSEPH Dear Friends, In union with the Church around the world, this weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Birthday of the Church We pray with today s Sequence, "Come, Holy Spirit, come Come, source of everything we need Without you we can do nothing" Two thousand years ago, officials hoped that the death of Jesus on the cross would blot out the Christian movement Instead, it did just the opposite The Christian movement began to spread like a raging forest fire It spread so spectacularly that 30 years later, by 64 AD, it had become a powerful force in faraway Rome It became so powerful that the Roman emperor, Nero, made it the target of an all-outpersecution How did Christianity, in 30 short years, grow from a tiny spark into a powerful force? The Holy Spirit is the answer The Spirit transformed this confused group of disciples into a courageous body of Christian believers, this disorganized group into a single body of witnesses, which we now call the Church So Pentecost is rightly called the birthday of the Church, the risen body of Christ made visible Today, what the Holy Spirit began on Pentecost was left to us to complete Each one of us received the Holy Spirit in a personal way through our baptism and our confirmation Like the disciples of Jesus, we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit for a purpose: to go forth and preach the Good News of the gospel to all peoples Let us continue to pray to the Holy Spirt to shower us with His grace and make us faithful disciples of Jesus in loving God, loving others, and building God s kingdom on earth In Christ s peace, love and service PARISH PICNIC The annual Parish picnic is scheduled for Sunday, June 3rd at 10:30 am at the Lions Shelter house at Rodeo Park The Parish will supply the entrée, drinks, and table service Families are asked to bring a dish to share RECTORY OPEN HOUSE On May 19th and 20th, after the 4:00 pm AND 10:30 AM Masses, there will be an Open House at the rectory All parishioners are invited to stop by and see the newly refinished wood floors, as well as just take a tour of the house The Open House will last a couple of hours after each Mass PARENT SESSION FOR INFANT/CHILD BAPTISM The next session for parents wishing to have an infant/child baptized is Monday evening, June 4th, at 6:00 pm at McAleer Hall Parents need to be registered members of Holy Family Parish To register for the class, please call Deacon Bob or Donna at 372-1318 PARISH OFFICE CLOSED The Parish office will be closed on the following days: Friday: Monday: Friday: May 25th May 28th June 1st Regular business hours will resume at 8:30 am on Tuesday, May 29th, and on Monday, June 4th
