Or are you one of those who does not enter the fair? If you fit in the last category may I ask you some questions I asked myself before I entered the fair for the first time: Why not? You cannot say you are not talented, because I have met several of you and am amazed at the amount of knowledge, creativity and talent that OHCE members possess. You say you don't have time? You may find you enjoy participating. Why not pledge now to allot time this next year to complete some entries? You say there are no categories you would like to enter? Have you really looked at the fair book? There is a large range of categories from which to choose. All active OHCE members can enter under the OHCE category, or if you are a resident of Oklahoma County you can enter the open class categories. If you still have no interest in the County Fair, then will you at least attend the fair? Come to the fairgrounds on Friday, August 24th from 2-7 p.m. or Saturday, August 25th from 9:30 a.m. to1:00 p.m. You can see all the entries, support OHCE, and hopefully get inspired to join in on the fun for next year. If you come on Saturday, bring your grandkids or neighborhood children and let them participate in the 4-H Kickoff and Family Fun Indoor Carnival, the Ice Cream Sundae Contest and/or the Kiddy Tractor Pull. I hope to see several of you at the County Fair! Now, for some random facts about Oklahoma County OHCE: 1.) Did you know that one of our groups has already made over 500 stockings for our Santa Stocking project? 2.) Did you know that one of our groups sells Blue and Gold Sausage and food items? 3.) Did you know that more than one of our groups serves faithfully with Mobile Meals? 4.) Did you know that one of our groups serves monthly with Safe Families (an organization that helps parents and children)? Oklahoma County OHCE is a busy group of hard-working volunteers! Keep up the good work! PRESIDENT S COLUMN Glenda Busby It will soon be County Fair time. Are you feverishly working to finish your entries? Have you not even 1 Name Badges-Price Increase Please be aware that there has been a price increase from ABC Sign for the bars that go under name badges. The basic badge has not increased in price. The Red River bar is now $1.50 each and the rectangle bars are now $1.25 each. Please note this change on page 62 of your yearbook.

2 How can you help with the Santa Stocking project? How about picking up some small bottles of hand sanitizer or notepads? This is what we will be collecting for the month of August. If you have gotten any of the items needed, please bring/send to the education lesson so we can keep a running total of items. Reminder: We still need more shaving cream and men's deodorant. December will be here before we know it! MEMBERSHIP 2019 New Members began July-1 DOROTHY DRIVER TURNS 100 Lisa Hamblin Friends and family celebrated Dorothy Driver s 100 th birthday on June 23 rd at the First Unitarian Church. People came from as far away as Pennsylvania and St. Louis, Mo. to be a part of Dorothy s special day. Fun stories were told about Dorothy. One friend had written a song and had the group sing it in her honor! Another highlight was a student from Dorothy s 1958 kindergarten class, who made a surprise presentation to her of a certificate and letter from Governor Mary Fallin. Carol Henson Northwest Seekers/ Council Grove OHCE GROUP NEWS LAS AMIGAS/WILL ROGERS KARA ZERBY WINS STATE LIFE STORY ESSAY CONTEST Lisa Hamblin Congratulations to Kara Zerby, Las Amigas/Will Rogers member, for winning first place in the State Life Story Essay Contest! The top 3 winners read their essays during the luncheon at the State OHCE Meeting, July 9 th. Kara s essay was titled, The Day My Husband Met His Son. Oklahoma County was well represented by Sandi Maness, OHCE Genealogy group, too. Even though her essay didn t make the top 3, Sandi received a 95% score! We are so proud of both ladies and hope we have great submissions again next year. Dorothy s former kindergarten student reads Gov. Fallin s 100th birthday proclamation. 3 MODERN HOMEMAKERS Burchie Smith Modern homemakers of Edmond met at Braum s on Thursday, July 12. Seven members present and one special guest County President Glenda Busby, who added much to our small group. We were glad for her visit. Sticking to our custom, our club president Georganna Childers opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and then Mary Watson read a lovely poem called Provisions From Heaven, giving thought to the fact that every living thing has its own defensive ways. Moving on, our roll call, taken by the Secretary Gwen Smith, was to tell what local museum or place of interest we have visited recently. Many places were mentioned. We then had a short discussion about how we should have a meeting at some other place, such as Western Heritage on 63 rd and visit the exhibits after lunch. No meals were delivered in July. Because of Fourth of July falling on a Wed., no meals were prepared. Two people will deliver in August. Every Tues. a small group, usually 3 to 4, meet at Georganna Childress home to sew stockings. Several have been made and we will continue to meet around 10 a.m. on Tues. at Georganna s home to make more. They usually pick a place to go to for lunch. Many purse-size tissue packs were collected and Georganna will deliver them. Mary Watson then presented the lesson on What s in Your Backyard -- Local Sites and Museums. Each person was given a copy of the 2018 Oklahoma Travel Guide. It describes lots of places to see in Oklahoma. Hopefully we will visit some of the places listed in the guide. CARDINAL Sarah Robinson The Cardinal group met at Higher Grounds Coffee Shop and Bakery, 5813 NW 63 rd St. in Warr Acres. Six members were present: Elaine McClellan, Caroline Robertson, Luann Woodward, Lynda Arnold, Linda Anthony, and Richa Ross. In answer to the roll call question of how often do you visit a local site or museum, we all agreed not often enough! Local attractions include Cowboy Hall of Fame, The Museum of Arts, Fort Gibson, The Chisholm Trail Museum in Kingfisher, the Round Barn in Arcadia, and St. Eugene s Catholic Church. Out of state attractions: Jamestown Settlement in Virginia, The History of Music Museum in Arizona, Saint Ignatius Mission Church, as it was originally built with dirt floors in Montana. Report of State Meeting: First Place Essay winner was County President Glenda Busby s daughter, Kara Zerby. Second Place A Real Okie, and third place The Summer of L, a story of four girls whose names all started with L. Capstone Project: We have permission to place a basket of snacks or fruits at the Superbia Nursing Facility. A late start, but we can go for fiscal year July July GENEALOGY Jan Beattie Genealogy Group was happy to welcome OK OHCE County President, Glenda Busby, to our meeting this month. We were so happy to have her attend our meeting. We love having guests drop by, so we hope you will consider visiting us soon. We love sharing our genealogy knowledge with others. Several of our members have been busy teaching genealogy classes or presenting programs outside the group. Michael McCoy, Walt Stoyanoski, Luann Waters and Jan Beattie have been giving programs to different senior citizen and genealogical society groups recently. Libby Hays took a genealogical research trip to the Mid Continent Genealogical Library in Independence, MO. Have you ever wondered how to figure out how you are related to someone else in your family tree? Or, what is a 3 rd cousin once removed? Member Glenn Clure will present Determining Familial Relationships for the Edmond Genealogical Society meeting on August 20 th. His program will help you sort out all your family relationships and get those cousins all straightened out. The OHCE Genealogy Group will be hosting a Fall Genealogy Workshop at the Extension Conference Center on Saturday, October 13 th from 9 am 4 pm. There will be topics of interest for both the beginning genealogist and experienced family researcher. Registration will be open soon, so watch for more information on our website: ohcegenealogy.com or on our OHCE Genealogy Group Facebook page. We literally unrolled our new OHCE Genealogy Group banner at our meeting! We are looking forward to having this to promote OHCE and the Genealogy Group at future fundraising and other events. We are all looking forward to the OHCE Roadshow event to be held in August. And, best of all, our Oklahoma Cemetery Directory is almost ready for publication! We have finally finished with all the photos that we needed and are now just waiting to review a recent cache of old cemetery records discovered at the Oklahoma Genealogical Society's Library. Emily, Cheryl, Libby and Jan are looking through these to see if there is anything not previously known that needs to be included. So, by mid-august we should be ready to publish! Members brought some show-and-tell and 3

4 displayed items at our meeting, highlighting what they plan to enter in the OK County Fair in August. Items included multi-generations photographs and several types of unpublished genealogy. At least two members plan to enter a Life Story. We encourage all our members to enter. We will also have another show-and-tell at our August meeting. Our program was presented by Dr. Chad Williams from the Oklahoma History Center. He had a very interesting program on A Gateway Project for the Oklahoma Historical Society, explaining and demonstrating all the wonderful things available to be discovered on the OHS website. You will be amazed at the audio, visual and record collections that have been digitized for us to search and explore. Anticipating our upcoming Civil War program, our monthly inspirational Genealogy Quick Tip this month concerned Part One of the military terms we may encounter in our genealogy research. We'll have part two at our August meeting. Our speaker will be Craig McKinley, who will present A Civil War Study: Not All Soldiers Were Generals. Come and discover information about your Civil War ancestors. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT Jan Beattie An OHCE Antiques Roadshow August 16th Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for an exciting OHCE Antiques Roadshow event following the Educational Lesson on Depression Glass on August 16 th. We'll have appraisers on site to offer free appraisals and advice for all your antiques, heirlooms and collectibles: glassware, dishes, china, ceramics furniture clocks jewelry clothing, christening gowns, hats, gloves quilts, needlework, samplers books paintings, sculptures, other works of art primitives kitchen implements farmware and tools and much, much more!! Bring any depression-era glass items to the Educational Lesson, too. There will be a fun activity so you can learn more about your pieces. 6 The Bits & Bytes OHCE Computer Group invites you to a Forum Monday, October 22, :00 to 3:00 If it's Connected, it needs to be Protected! Learn why and how things that are connected to the Internet need to be secured and protected. This presentation will cover: Computers (Windows and Mac), Tablets, Phones and the IoT (Internet of Things). Join presenter Bob Gostischa, as he explains the current dangers that face us every day. He ll also share what he uses to keep his computers, smart devices and other connected things that are a part of the IoT secure.
