Grand Knights Report: Grand Knight s Report May 4, 2017 Our primary order of business tonight is nominations for Executive positions for the coming year, so I will try and keep my report brief, 1. I attended the Annual State Convention on April 21st & 22 nd. The only resolution impacting the councils financially is a $40 per year assessment allocated to the Columbian Squires. 2. We ve only sold 34 tickets to the Mother s Day Brunch, but we are committed to holding this event regardless and we ll need volunteers after each mass again this weekend to sell tickets (I have the tickets and cash box with me). We also need volunteers to help prep food and supplies, setup the day before, and cook and serve at the event. I will compile a list and it to the members requesting help. Ross, Peter and I will be purchasing the food and supplies. I suggest we meet briefly to review the list after 9:30 mass on Sunday. 3. We are also committed to selling hot dogs, burgers, water and pop from our food trailer at the Multicultural/Heritage Day at the church on Sunday, June 11 th. 4. Ross and I met with Father Biju regarding our concerns about a rather compressed fundraising timeframe of 2 years for the Monument Project and requested that it be extended to 4 years. Father agreed to speak with the anonymous donor but he didn t foresee a problem. The project and fundraising campaign will be rolled out to the Parish after all Archdiocese approvals are received and special collection envelopes are printed. All envelopes will be collected and passed to the Knights weekly. The funds will be recorded on a spreadsheet of donors and deposited into our charitable account and donated to the church earmarked for the monument project. Council tax receipts will be provided to all donors and envelopes will be retained for verification. 5. I want to extend a special thanks to the team of brothers that managed the recent trailer transaction. That would include Tom Osler, Ross Armstrong and Ken Crickard and Bob Griffin. I d also like to express our thanks and appreciation to Tom Osler for agreeing to store all 3 trailers on his property in Ivey at no cost to the council. There are many tasks and efforts that go on behind the scenes, outside of the fundraising events themselves that we are not always aware of and it s important to recognize those contributions. 6. Once again, I encourage all brothers that will have received their Knighthood (or 3 rd degree) by June of this year to please consider running for an Executive position. David Ross Grand Knight 3

Financial Secretary s Report: Why do we pay our council yearly membership dues and how is this money spent? I am going to try to answer this question. To start off the fact is that most or all of the money raised during our fund raising events are donated to the church and the remainder to a number of community charitable organizations. The council has yearly costs for supplies and shipping, postage, printing and many other things that come up over the year. Our youth Basketball Free Throw ($300 to $400) must be paid out of our General Fund. Then there is the fact that over 50% of your dues are sent to the Supreme Council and the Ontario State Council to help them in the good works they do locally and internationally. The Columbian Magazine which you receive each month is a great source to keep you up to date on what we are all contributing too. All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Charity Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together we support one another. That doesn t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that as a Knight of Columbus you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Fraternity Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Order s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do the good works of individual Knights, who gave more than 73.5 million service hours in 2015, illustrating how Catholics serve each other in fraternity and mercy. Patriotism Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to 4

God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens. NO KNIGHT WILL STAND ALONE There may be cases of Brothers in distress during these economic times. If you are in need of any assistance and / or concerned with the paying of your dues for the upcoming year 2017, contact the Grand Knight, David Ross, at (705) or the Financial Secretary, Paul Bench, at (705) They will handle all situations with the utmost privacy. Paul Bench Financial Secretary 42 Brookfield Crescent Barrie Ontario, L4N 9R6 Chancellor s Report: I would like to invite all Brother Knights to join our newest members who will be doing their Formation (2nd) degree on May 16th at the KOC Hall at 7:30 pm. Also, our golf tournament is fast approaching. If you don't want to be disappointed get your registration in at the earliest. Invite your spouse, neighbours and friends. In order for our first annual tournament to be a success, it is imperative that each one of us find a sponsor for a hole or a prize. To date we have very few prizes and only approximately 10 hole sponsors. Let's all pitch in for the sake of Hospice Simcoe and our Council. 5

Pro-life Article: Pro-choice argument: Religion should not influence our laws. Pro-life answer: 1. That statement begs a more fundamental question - what is the unborn? If the unborn is in fact a human being, then we can't permit abortion simply on the basis that Christianity opposes it. 2. Laws against murder and stealing are based on the 10 Commandments. Which one of these would you like to toss? The truth is that killing children in utero violates the natural law, not just Christian teaching. 3. If something is true, it remains true, regardless of who agrees with it. Should we stop teaching times tables in school because the Church agrees with arithmetic? The nature of the unborn is key in this debate, not who are the groups debating it. Pro-choice argument: What about compassion for young women whose lives will be ruined by an unwanted pregnancy? Pro-life answer: #1. That statement begs a deeper question - what is the unborn? If the unborn is in fact a human being, we cannot choose one person's convenience over another person's life. The inherent right to not be killed always ranks higher than the alleged right to be free from hardship or inconvenience. #2. It is false to suggest that their future educational and career goals must end because one becomes pregnant. With the choice of adoption and the many support programs which exist today, young women or teens can postpone their educational plans but still achieve them. Pro-choice argument: It's cruel to force a woman to carry a pregnancy which was the result of rape. Pro-life answer: #1. The Supreme Court has said that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment for rapists and that rapists don t deserve the death penalty. I don t think the innocent child conceived in rape deserves the death penalty for the crimes of her father. It seems to me that is cruel and unusual punishment. #2. Rape victims are 4 times more likely to die within the next year after the abortion, with a higher rate of suicide, murder, drug overdose, etc.. As someone who really cares about rape victims, I want to protect them from the rapist, and from the abortion. A baby is not the worst thing that could ever happen to a rape victim an abortion is. We need to educate the public on the truth in this matter and not make public policy based on myth and misinformation. #3. Rape victims choose abortion at half the rate of the average unplanned pregnancy, which is over 50%. Only 15-25% of rape victims choose abortion, depending on the study. The majority of rape victims choose to raise her child not the rapist s baby HER child. 13

Hart Series, and the Veritas Series for study. Based on the text from these incredibly popular booklets, both courses explore Catholicism and its underlying beliefs in a personal, easy-to-understand format. These two courses can be downloaded in PDF format to read on a computer or E Reader, or in MP3 format to listen to on a device like an ipod or in a CD player They can be downloaded at: Our Council St. John Vianney: Ontario State Council Other Councils: St. Mary s Council Holy Spirit Collingwood Council Alliston Council

Midland Council Orangeville Council Humorous: 1 - A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year old s. After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill." 2 - Terri asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of their favorite Bible stories. She was puzzled by Kyle's picture, which showed four people on an airplane, so she asked him which story it was meant to represent. "The flight to Egypt," said Kyle. "I see... And that must be Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus," Ms. Terri said. "But who's the fourth person?" "Oh, that's Pontius -- the Pilot!" 15
