3 NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE PROVINCIAL HISTORIC RESOURCE (Historical Resources Act) File No. Des 1509 Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the site known as: the Lac La Biche Mission Grist/Sawmill, together with the land legally described as: Plan , Block 1, Lot 1, excepting thereout all mines and minerals, and municipally located in Lakeland County near Lac La Biche, Alberta be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A C.H-9. The reasons for the designation are as follows: The Oblate Mission of Notre Dame des Victoires was established at Mission Bay on the south shore of Lac La Biche in The production of food, which was a primary concern, was initially focused on the cultivation of root crops, vegetables and barley. However when wheat was successfully grown, the need for a gristmill became apparant. Approximately three kilometres south of the mission site a small watercourse was dammed to create a millpond. A canal, approximately 200 metres in length was excavated to provide water to power gristmill grindstones and machinery that were brought from St. Boniface, Manitoba by Father Lacombe in Soon, it became apparent that a sawmill was also required to facilitate the construction of additional buildings at the mission. By adapting the power drive of the gristmill to a second drive that powered a circular saw, the Oblates expanded the gristmill to include a sawmill that began operations in October To provide the additional power required, a 4.5m (15 foot) diameter water wheel was constructed and the water channel was deepened to improve the flow and supply of water. As transportation systems improved and supplies such as flour and lumber could be brought into the area more easily from other sources, the need for the local mill diminished. After 27 years of operation it was dismantled in 1898 and taken to St. Paul de Metis. No structural evidence of the mill remains at the site, however, evidence of the built-up dam and the canal system remains. This is the site of the earliest known waterpowered grist/sawmill in Alberta and is an integral component of the Mission of Notre Dame de Victoires complex. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest. Dated February 4, Mark Rasmussen, Assistant Deputy Minister. File No. Des 1959 Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the site known as: the Rutledge Hangar, together with the land legally described as: 4221GL, Block 20, excepting thereout all mines and minerals and the right to work the same, and municipally located at Avenue, N.E. Calgary, Alberta 407

4 be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A C.H-9. The reasons for the designation are as follows: Constructed in 1929, for the Rutledge Air Service, the Rutledge Hangar is the original and largest hangar at the Stanley Jones airport. Calgary s first publicly operated airport. It is the only structure that remains at the site of the airport. The Hangar is a lamella wood arched structure on a concrete foundation with lateral thrust buttresses. The wood members are of dimensional Douglas Fir lumber that are organized in a diamond pattern to form what is called a Lamella Arch. The resulting structure acts as a rigid arch that is very strong for its weight, was readily transported and was easily erected without sophisticated equipment. A key element of the structural system is the reinforced concrete foundation that includes a series of exterior concrete buttresses that function to transfer the lateral load of the arch into the foundation. This method of construction was common in the early 1900s for air hangar construction, but is no longer used. The Rutledge Hangar is the only known example of this type of design and construction remaining in Alberta. While it has undergone several additions and alterations over the years, the structure still retains the character defining elements of the Lamella Arch design and method of construction. The historical interest of the Rudledge Hangar lies in its association with the development of commercial aviation in Calgary during the late 1920s, and its more limited service as an air hangar during the 1930s. Its use for training during World War II was important as well. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest. Dated February 5, Mark Rasmussen, Assistant Deputy Minister. File No. Des 2018 Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the site known as: the Treend Residence, together with the land legally described as: th Plan 1913X, Block 2, Lot 9, and municipally located at Street, S.W., Calgary, Alberta be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A C.H-9. The reasons for the designation are as follows: Constructed in 1922, the Treend House is an excellent example of the Prairie Style, originated by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The structure contains many of the character defining elements of this style such as; a low-pitched roof, broad overhanging eaves, massive porch support pillars, the openness of the floor plan, and the use of natural materials. The building has not been subject to much alteration and retains an extensive amount of its original building fabric as well as character defining elements of its style and design. 408

5 The historical interest of the Treend Residence lies in its association with several prominent Calgary business people, particularly Samuel and Lena Hansen who figured prominently in the Cattle industry through their ownership of the V Bar B Ranch, and the establishment of Hansen s Ltd, a clothing and department store and the Betty Shop which evolved into a chain of forty outlets. With its Prairie Style, the site reflects, in many ways, the aspirations of those entrepreneurs who were instrumental in the development of a vibrant Alberta economy. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest. Dated February 5, Mark Rasmussen, Assistant Deputy Minister. File No. Des 2103 Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the site known as: the A. MacDonald Building, together with the land legally described as: Plan B3, Block 1, Lot 231 and 232, excepting thereout all mines and minerals, and th municipally located at Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A C.H-9. The reasons for the designation are as follows: Constructed in , the A. MacDonald Building is a carefully proportioned fourstorey brick and steel frame structure built around a heavy wooden frame. Although constructed as a warehouse, considerable attention was paid to the exterior of the building. Stylistically, it incorporates a number of classical revival features: roman arches with keystones, rusticated columns, and an entablature framing the main doorway. Originally, a heavy cornice, made of pressed metal, extended along the west facade. The windowless east facade was utilized as a billboard and over the years, various advertisements including the company name were painted in large lettering and were visable from any blocks away. Much of this signage is visible today. The A. th MacDonald Building is a very good example of an early 20 century warehouse building, which retains many of the character defining elements of its style. It is an integral component of Edmonton s historic warehouse district. The historical interest of the A. MacDonald Building lies in its provision of structural evidence of tremendous commercial growth of Edmonton in the years leading up to World War I, and also of the role that Edmonton played as a distribution centre for the provision of goods and supplies to the developing regions to the north and west. MacDonald s Consolidated, the primary occupant of the structure from 1914 to 1949, played a major role in the distribution of goods, primarily food, to the regions north and west of Edmonton and became one of the best known and recognized companies of its type in the province. As this produce was shipped to the northern reaches of the province by rail, the building is also representative of the central role played by the Canadian Northern Railway in the development of Edmonton as the major distribution centre for the north. The building is directly associated with Harry H. Hooper, the manager and principal owner of MacDonald s Consolidated, who is significant not only for the development of his company and its influence on the settlement of the north, but also for his community activities as well. 409
