David Foster, DOM Proverbs 23:7, For as he thinks in his heart, so is he What we think, how we feel and how we behave are all closely connected and all of these factors have a decisive influence on our total well-being. Each of these three parts of our being effects the other. What we think and how we feel has a great impact on how we behave. Which is most important, which one has the greatest influence on the other two? The way Proverbs 23:7 reads, the way we think determines who we are. Pause and think about that for a moment. The English Standard Version translates the NKJV, thinks as calculates. For as he calculates in his soul, so is he (ESV). So, based on the passage from Proverbs, how is your thinking? If you are having a difficult time coming up with an answer, consider this question: How is your behavior? Remember, so as he thinks...so is he. My observation is that many of us are not behaving very well. In our churches, from the pulpit to the pew, we see: selfishness, power-struggles, slander, strife, divisions, sexual immorality, idolatry, enmity, jealousy, fits of anger, dissensions, envy, drunkenness, etc. Paul refers to these behaviors as the desires of the flesh. He also says that these desires are against the Spirit. The fruit the Spirit produces is: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5). How much different would your church be if YOU were bearing this kind of fruit? Well, here s how to do it. Romans 12:2, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your (fill in the blank). For as he thinks (calculates) in his heart, so is he. The Hebrew root from which thinks is translated means, gate. A gate is a controlled access to a walled city. It keeps enemies out. Our thinking is the gate to our very self. What we let in is what will be revealed in our thinking, our feeling, and in our behavior. Church, I believe it is time for us to get our thinking fixed on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praise-worthy. These are the things we should think about. (Phil 4:8). For the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we MUST get our thinking right. For the sake of those who are not a part of the family of God, we MUST get our thinking right. For the sake of the church, and our witness, we MUST get our thinking right. Once our thinking is right, our feeling and our behavior will be right. James MacDonald said this: Nothing will be different until we think differently.
