1 A Message from the Scout Executive Doug Clevinger Cape Fear Council Scout Executive Dear Klahican Lodge Membership: Our council has just concluded a record setting year in the number of campers attending Summer Camp at Camp Bowers. In addition to setting a new attendance record, our Summer Camp Staff was probably the finest of any summer in recent memory. I want to express my personal thanks and appreciation to all the Lodge membership who contributed to helping make this one of the most successful summers ever for the Cape Fear Council. Much of the success of the past summer can be directly attributed to the involvement of our Klahican Lodge Membership, beginning with the promotion of our Summer Camp attendance. Members of each local chapter throughout the council got involved in visiting troops and helping to promote their attendance at our Summer Camp program. Those camp promotion teams did an outstanding job in helping troops to make their plans in advance for their successful participation in our Summer Camp program. The participation of our Lodge membership continued in the spring as help was given during the Spring Fellowship with the setting up of tents and the preparation of the facilities for the summer. The greatest contribution of all may have come from the outstanding Lodge members who served on our Summer Camp Staff. The pride they displayed in making our Summer Camp program the best ever was evident. Their leadership skills had a great deal to do with helping make our program beneficial in the lives of young men. The quality and integrity of these young men reflect well on the quality of the membership we have in the Klahican Lodge. I am very proud to be a part of a Lodge that truly lives the creed of cheerful service. Our council is grateful for your many contributions throughout the year. Sincerely, Doug Clevinger Scout Executive Chiefly Speaking Hall Sigmon Lodge Chief Brothers, Let me start out by saying how proud I was of everything that got done at our Fall Ordeal this year. Finally getting those lodge totem poles up around the dance arbor just minutes after receiving the headdress as your new chief was a very proud moment for me. Congratulations to all of our new Ordeal members, those who sealed their membership in Klahican Lodge by attaining their Brotherhood, and all other members who were present at the Ordeal Weekend. Our next lodge function will be the Lodge Banquet on Friday, November 30 followed the next day by our One Day of Service. Be sure to reserve a place for yourself at the banquet for some good ole fellowship as well as a good meal and an inspirational speech before our One Day of Service the next morning. I am looking forward to seeing some new faces this year at the banquet and having lots of Brothers there for some cheerful service in the morning. I ll also be bring my disc in hopes of having time for some ultimate frisbee when we have finished. I hope all of you have a wonderful Turkey Day this year and I ll see you at the banquet. Part of my job is overseeing the lodge trading post. My duties include overseeing the trading post at fellowships and adding new merchandise as necessary. If there is anyone who has an idea of something you would like to add to it please let me know. The Nalgenes were a great success in that we have sold over half of our bottles. If you have not gotten yours yet be sure to do it soon. If you would like your name on the bottle let Mr. Jim Taylor know. With your help this is going to be a great year. 4 What is a NOAC and why should I go? The 2002 National Order of the Arrow Conference is the 27th gathering of over 7,000 Arrowmen from more than 350 lodges all across the nation. The conference will.....provide Arrowmen and other participants a clearer understanding of the Scout Oath and Law and the Order of the Arrow Obligation...Build a deep sense of pride and commitment to Scouting and the Order...Give Arrowmen a meaningful OA experience of which they can truly say, "This is Scouting and the Order at its Best!"..Emphasize the need for all of us to rededicate ourselves to serving Scouting in our troop and council...provide opportunities to improve youth and adult leadership skills...be a time to share knowledge and the pageantry of Indian heritage and tradition...provide information on how to successfully promote Boy Scout camping...provide the opportunity for Arrowmen to meet and spend time with fellow Arrowmen from around the country. Where is this NOAC? This year the conference will be held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. What does it cost? The conference fees have not yet been published but will probably be around $ This fee will include housing, meals, and program and support materials during the conference. There will be additional costs for transportation, t- shirts, patches, travel meals, etc. Total cost for each member of our contingent is not expected to be over $ per participant. We hope to raise funds to defray some of the costs. We will have final figures available as soon as possible. How many people can go? At NOAC in 2000 our lodge quota was 15, 10 youth & 5 adults. We have requested additional space and are likely of getting it. Anyone who wants to go should sign up and make a deposit. If additional space is not available those not attending will receive full refunds. Will we get a chance to preorder material from the Trading Post? Yes. There will be patches, pins, shirts, hats, neckerchiefs, etc. What are some of the activities at NOAC? Athletic competition, displays and exhibits, Native American crafts, ceremonial techniques, dance competition, 4 big shows, training sessions, trading post, patch trading. How do I sign up? Fill out the form (on reverse side) and send it to the Scout office as soon as possible. We will date each application and if we get more than we are allocated, we will contact each one to determine how we will select the lodge contingent (youth are selected first) and how to handle the overflow.

5 Cancellation and Refund Policy: Sign Up Form for the NATIONAL ORDER OF THE ARROW CONFERENCE (NOAC) July 27-31, 2002 Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana The ratio of youth reservations to adult reservations is 2 to 1 A $50.00 per participant deposit is required to reserve a space. The $50.00 deposit is transferable within the lodge but is not refundable unless a space on the contingent is not available. All other fees are not refundable but may be transferable within the lodge, adult to adult or youth to youth. Payment Plan: The tentative payment plan will be as follows: $50.00 Deposit at sign up (as soon as possible) $ December 31, 2001 $ February 15, 2002 $ March 31, 2002 (amount to be adjusted as needed) $ Total A BSA Class III Medical or Equivalent will be required for this event! Yes, I want to go the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). Enclosed is my $50.00 deposit. I will pay the balance according to the above payment plan. I understand that if I do not pay according to the above payment plan then I may lose my slot (with refund). All fees are due by March 31,2002.
