Editor-in-Chief Morgan McNally Contributing Writers Brandon Villalpando Ryan Fuhrman Brian Major Roman Ventura Advisers Rick Christeson John Keller Publisher Lakota Chapter est Ordeal By Ryan Fuhrman On May 2nd, the Spring Ordeal was held at Firestone. Even though we had 40 candidates, the whole event was run by the Lodge. Our Elangomats, chosen by our Elangomat chair Matt Affa, did their jobs well but will have to continue to encourage and guide their ordeal graduates through to their Brotherhood conversion ceremonies. For the ceremonies, the chapters had previously volunteered to do the specific events, pre-ordeal, Ordeal, and Brotherhood. Lakota volunteered and successfully ran Pre-Ordeal and Brotherhood. Both ceremonies ran very smoothly. For the Pre-Ordeal, there were 4 separate ceremonies. For the Ordeal ceremony, Apache successfully ran the ceremony. Chief s Corner Camporee By Brian Major This year the Spring Camporee was held at Forest Lawn Scout Reservation up in Arrowhead. The theme was On Target. It was held on April A special thing about this year s camporee is that the OA was in charge of everything. In previous years the district committee would do all the planning of the destination and the theme, and the OA would supply the staff. This year though the district gave the OA a chance to run the spring camporee. The members on the OA committee worked hard with the planning committee helping them on planning the theme, designing the patch and determining where it would be held. (Cont d. on pp.4) Greetings my Brothers, For many of you this is the first Lakota Chapter Newsletter that you have ever received. Inside you will find information on our Officers and past, as well as upcoming events that will give you a slightly larger picture of what we do as Arrowmen in Lakota Chapter. With so many Units becoming inactive during the summer, it can be difficult to find Scouting related activities in the months ahead. Fortunately, Lakota Chapter is active all through the year. In addition to our regular Chapter Meetings at 7:30 pm on the third Tuesday of every month at the Torrance Stake Center, we will be supporting the Pacifica District Soapbox Derby in El Segundo on July 11 th. This is an excellent service opportunity to give back to Pacifica District, which has supported our mission of youth leadership for 15 years. As you read through this issue, I encourage you to find an committee that you identify with. Whether you are interested in Ceremonies, Trading Post, or Camping Promotions, you will find any interest that you may have represented in these committees, as well as the opportunity to lead and learn more than you could in your Unit. WWW, Soren Fulton

3 Eagle Scout Projects One of the primary ways Lakota Chapter serves Pacifica District is by providing volunteers for Eagle Scout Projects. If you are planning your Eagle Project we encourage you to come to one of our Chapter Meetings or contact us to ask for volunteers. June 2009 Calendar 6th Chapter Fellowship Day 16th - Chapter Meeting 23rd - CEC Meeting 24th LEC Meeting Page 3 July th - Pacifica Soap Box Derby 21st Chapter Meeting 28th - CEC Meeting 31st-6 Aug NOAC New Vigil Members: The 2 new Vigil members have red arrows near them. Jeff Perrine is standing, and Howard Limburg is kneeling. Vigil By Brandon Villalpando As there is every year, there was a Vigil Call-Out at the recent Potlatch. Every year, there are on average 6-8 people called out from the entire Lodge. For the past several years, Lakota Chapter has made up close to 50% of these Call-Outs, on average. This year was no exception. Lakota Chapter had 3 of its members called out at this year s Potlatch. Matt Affa, one of the Vigil candidates, and the Elangomat Chair, was unable to attend. This came just after the successful Spring Ordeal. The other two, however, were able to attend and receive the Vigil Honor. Howard Limburg was one of the two in attendance. He was the 2008 Lakota Chapter Chief, and is now serving as the Siwinis Lodge NOAC Contingent Chair. Jeff Perrine, the other Arrowman called out, has been an Associate Chapter Adviser for Camping Promotions, Elangomat office, and Niamat. Congratulations to those 3 Lakota Arrowmen and the others selected by the Lodge! 4 Page 4 Upcoming Events 1. Soap Box Derby - July 11th: Lakota is helping with the annual Soap Box Derby. We will most likely provide First Aid and some odd jobs. Talk to Richard to sign up! 2. NOAC July 31st to August 6th: The National Order of the Arrow Convention! Those who are going have been paying since winter, and the Lodge contingent will be lead by Howard Limburg and Will Althoff! Talk to Howard for details! 3. Lodge Fellowship Day August 22nd: A great fellowship opportunity with the entire Lodge. Significantly less competitive than Potlatch, and much more relaxed. There will be lunch, and also assorted sports, such as football. Don t miss out, and don t forget to wear your Chapter T-Shirt! Adviser s Corner Lakota Chapter is having a great year so far. We have a strong youth leadership team, experienced Advisers, and a large membership. Many Lakota Arrowmen hold positions of responsibility in their Units, Pacifica District, Siwinis Lodge, or LAAC. Those who are active already know that the Order of the Arrow is the single best opportunity for youth leadership. Some of our less active members and all of our new Ordeal members may not yet realize that fact. Having just inducted 40 new members and seen new Brotherhoods and Vigils it is a good time to remind ourselves of why we joined and why we are still active with the OA. Please think about that and then talk to the other Arrowmen in your units who are not currently active. Remind them of the fun and purpose that make the OA a great place to learn for your and adults. Pinewood Derby By Roman Ventura On April 25th, the annual Pinewood Derby was held in the Del Amo Mall, just inside entrance number 11. As we do every year, Lakota Chapter was in attendance to help them run their event. Every year we help with registration, timing and scoring. This year was no different. There were five Lakota arrowmen youth in attendance, as well as 2 adults. They worked from 8am-1pm, alongside District members Kurt and Lisa. The arrowmen helped hand out awards for both classes and for all of the ranks in attendance. This event, along with the Rocket Academy and Soap Box Derby, is very important to the OA because it starts interest in the OA at an early age. The more we participate, the more interested Cubs we have going into Boy Scouts. William Althoff, Lakota Chapter Adviser (Camporee cont d from pp.1) Without the District committee help (which consisted of Debbie Shockley, Tim Affa, Janet Ingersol, and a couple others) help the OA would be lost in some of the planning. They also helped to set up event locations, set up the events and make maps of where. On April 17th (Friday) some of the staff members got up to Forest lawn between 1 and 3pm to set the event locations, setting up event locations, setting up the events and making maps. When people started to check in it was all hands on deck. Every staff member who was at camp was helping with check-in. After check-in everyone was so tired that they went right to sleep, with hardly anyone staying up to chat. Saturday morning everyone was up bright and early setting up breakfast and finishing setting up events. At 9:05 the events started and people were off having fun. Some of the events consisted of darts, lassoing, rifle shooting, and archery. There was even knife throwing. People were out all day having fun. There were hardly any problems. Every moment there were people at each activity actively participating in each activity. The scoutmasters kept saying how there was no one in their camp, they were all off having fun. (Cont d on pp 5)
5 Page 5 (Camporee cont d. from pp.4) Around 4pm the events started to wind down and people started to cook dinner and get ready for campfire, which was a little bumpy in the beginning, but thanks to the quick thinking of the MC. David Dye he was able to run the campfire without a program. Once it came time for the call out everyone was silent, and the ceremonies team had a new style they were trying out, and it went great without a hitch. It brought some excitement and mystery among the scouts and scouters being called out. After campfire there was a cracker barrel at the mess hall and people were watching FOLLOW ME BOYS. After the movie people headed off to bed, for it was around 11:30. On Sunday morning, people were up early again making breakfast, cleaning up their campsites, and getting ready to checkout. The staff cleaned up all the event areas and checked each campsite. After the campsites were cleaned the troops checked out, got their patches and headed home, with the staff members not far behind. Around 11:00 everyone was out of camp and heading home, content Lakota CEC Contact Information Position Name Cell Home Officers Chief Soren Fulton jp_soren@yahoo.com Vice Chief David Dye N/A bsa2oa@gmail.com Sachem Morgan McNally gnomehater1@yahoo.com Treasurer Brian Major kbmom5@sbcglobal.net IPC Howard Limburg howardj1217@hotmail.com Elangomat Matt Affa N/A bsa2oa@gmail.com Hunter Taylor Wood tctcwood@aol.com Medicine Man Brandon Villalpando ramsrule427@aol.com Messenger Ryan Glymph N/A oboeboy99@aol.com Niamat Richard Faherty thehbo2@aol.com Trading Post Brian Applegate N/A bobapplegate@verizon.net Vigil Brandon Villalpando ramsrule427@aol.com Advisers Adviser William Althoff N/A wtalthoff@gmail.com Deputy Adviser Tim Affa taffa@pacbel.net Communications Adviser Rick Christeson rick@christeson.com Communications Adviser John Keller jgkeller@earthlink.net Finance Adviser Mike Villalpando mvilla100@aol.com Finance Adviser Vaughn Wendelstadt wendelstadt@earthlink.net IPC Adviser Mark Lidikay mlidikay@holdenandrew.com Elangomat Adviser Brian Wilder brian.t.wilder@mac.com Elections Adviser Bob Applegate bobapplegate@verizon.net Ceremonies Adviser Kathie Wood kathleenjwood@aol.com Ceremonies Adviser Terry Glymph N/A terryglymph@aol.com Ceremonies Adviser Dennis Fuhrman drfuhrman@yahoo.com Camping Promotions Adviser Len Pagarigan kahunamon@yahoo.com Brotherhood Adviser Jeff Perrine jrperrine@earthlink.com TP Adviser Tim Desmond timdesm@gmail.com Vigil Adviser Noble Smith noble.smith@gmail.com DE/Staff Adviser Victor Zuniga Work: x321 victor.zuniga@boyscoutsla.org
