2 ATHLETIC MISSION Our student athletes will be responsible through personal integrity to display positive leadership, attitude, and sportsmanship while developing and motivating themselves and others to be successful. PARENT/COACH RELATIONS Both parenting and coaching are extremely challenging and rewarding vocations. We at GNHS intend to establish open communications between coaches and parents to foster a common understanding and clarity of expectations. The student athlete benefits when we work together and we all enjoy the results of the partnership. COMMUNICATION YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM YOUR ATHLETE S COACH Philosophy of the coach Expectations of the student athlete in the program Program Rules and Consequences Locations and times of all practices and contests Team requirements (i.e. fees, special equipment, off-season conditioning, and summer programs) Procedure, should your student be injured during competition COMMUNICATION COACHES EXPECT FROM PARENTS Concerns about the student or about the coach s expectations and requirements of athletes Advanced notice of any schedule conflicts As your sons/daughters become involved in the programs at Grayslake North High School, they will experience some of the most rewarding moments of their lives. Athletics can also be very challenging and demanding. If concerns arise, discussion with the coach is encouraged.

3 CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES The emotional and physical well-being of your son/daughter Ways to help your student improve Concerns about your student s behavior Situations occasionally arise which require a conference to include the coach, the athlete and the parent. Please take advantage of this option if needed, so that all parties involved may possess a clearer understanding and arrive at an agreement on a resolution. WHEN CONCERNS ARISE PLEASE INITIATE THE FOLLOWING STEPS: 1. Student athlete should discuss issues of concern with their respective level head coach 2. Parent should contact the respective sport head coach to schedule a meeting with your student athlete, yourself and the coach 3. Parent should contact the Athletic Office to schedule a meeting with your student athlete, yourself, the coach and the Athletic Director, Tina Woolard 4. Parent should contact the building principal, Dr. Jim Roscoe. All meetings will include the student athlete, as the student athlete s well-being is our main concern. Immediately preceding or following a practice or contest, emotions can run high, therefore, please schedule your meetings with the coach at the appropriate times. This will help promote a more positive resolution. Research indicates that a student involved in extracurricular activities has a greater chance of success during adulthood. Many of the character traits required to be a successful participant are exactly those that will promote a successful life after high school. We hope the information provided in this pamphlet makes both your student athlete s and your experience with the Grayslake North Athletic Programs less stressful and more enjoyable.
