2 Page 2 NEWSVIEWS 9 8 t h N A T I O N A L C O N V E N T I O N 98th National Convention & 33rd Symposium will be held in Houston, Texas Thursday, July 14 - Saturday, July 16, 2016! Registration can be made for the National Convention on the Exchange website linked from the Member Resources section. Exchange's Programs of Service and Fundraising Expo will be held again this year, July 14, 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.. This "show-and-tell" is a great opportunity to explore what other Exchange Clubs and Exchange Club CAP Centers have done. PROUDLY WE HAIL May 25th The Proudly We Hail program encourages regular display of the flag by individuals and commercial establishments. Submit members of the community for this years award to Tom Beason or Max Jaeger Respect the Flag It is customary to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs, except during inclement weather. It may be displayed at night to produce a patriotic effect if proper lighting is provided. Weather permitting, display the flag every day. Always hoist the flag briskly, and lower it ceremoniously. Flags should always be flown on national and state holidays and other days proclaimed by the United States President. Look around Mattoon and check out the flags that are displayed. Get the name and make a contact to invite a member of the location to a club meeting and then get the information to Tom Beason or Max Jaeger for our PROUDLY WE HAIL BREAKFAST on May 25. O F F I C I A L C A L L D I S T R I C T C O N V E N T I O N The 90 th Convention of the Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs will be held Thursday, June 9 through Sunday, June 12, 2016, in St. Charles, Illinois. All convention sessions and meal events will take place at Pheasant Run Resort.

3 Page 3 NEWSVIEWS M A ST ER G A RD ENER JOYCE A LLEN Joyce Allen, from the Master Gardeners spoke to the Club about the program and what it does and then addressed particular topics that are important at this time to gardeners. Joyce talked about the saving of seeds from year to year and the proper gardening tools. One of her main topics was what to do to help preserve and expand the monarch butterfly population. Like bees and many other insects they are important in pollinating plants, both domestic and wild ones. The butterfly numbers have been decreasing because they lay their eggs on the milkweed plant and milkweed plants have been disappearing because of loss of habitat. Farmers and states now mow the edge of their fields and roadways which is one of the few remaining habitats for this plant. Joyce described efforts by organizations to help preserve the monarchs and what we can do as individuals. Richard Heller Staff Writer MICHELE SINCLAIR PRINCIPAL MATTOON HIGH SCHOOL Retiring principal Michele Sinclair was recognized for her many years of outstanding service at Mattoon High School by Past District President of Exchange and retired high school instructor Bill VanKeuren. Michele has definitely made her mark at Mattoon through years of teaching and in the last years as Principal. Best wishes to you and your family as you begin your retirement career.

4 Page 4 NEWSVIEWS A D O P T A H I G H W A Y On April 15 and 16 members picked up items along Route 16 West of Mattoon. Walking the route this Spring were Larry Gutzler (Thanks for being Chair), Dennis Booker, Dave Ropiequet, Colleen VanGundy, John Swick, Laverne Schaal, Dennis Gathmann, George Stone, Jack Little, Bill Saunders, Robert Riggert and Tony Nicholson. T-BALL SPO SORSHI P Tyler Walk and his son Griffin spoke to the Exchange Club about the Mattoon T-Ball Program. This year there are 30 teams and they are free to all kids thus providing a good opportunity for all the youth of Mattoon to get a start in the sport and also learn the basics of baseball. The boys or girls range in age from four to seven and play at the Mattoon Sports Complex. The league has been in existence for thirty years. Tyler as a child had participated in T-Ball and so has his son Griffin. He said the league is always looking for qualified referees. T-ball has helped continue Mattoon s tradition as a baseball town by getting many people involved in the sport at an early age. ============================================= Exchange Club has again sponsored a team that will be playing at the T-Ball Field located at North 2nd and Shelby. 8 Page 8 NEWSVIEWS A N N UA L G O L F O U T I N G Before dawn on Sunday, April 3rd, a group of men left Mattoon for TN (thanks to those women who got up early to deliver the golfers). Exchange Club members who went on the trip were Tom Beason, Don Derrick, Ron Hatfield, Troy Jayroe, John Lawson, Rick Mercer, Bob Riggert, Laverne Schaal and John Swick. Also going on the trip were Bob Atchley, Jerry Bish, Joe Buescher, Chuck Castle, Tom Jerome and Steve Matheny. Upon arrival in TN, most of the golfers played 132 holes of golf on two courses in Bartlett and Millington over the next four days. For the fifteen golfers, this is a total of 1938 holes of golf. There were eagles, birdies, pars and lots of 'others' scored. The two- and four-man scrambles resulted in some very good scores ranging from 3 to 6 strokes under par for just 9 holes. The weather was probably the best that we have had for this trip. Thanks to all who went on the trip and especially for their amiability and cooperation. John Swick Chair Rules Committee

Gary spends his hours in the comfort of his workshop area with warmth, TV and enjoys the results such as this house. RAFFLE Prepare to offer grandparents, parents, aunts or uncles an opportunity to be the owner of this fine home for a small contribution of $10 or offer added chances by the purchase of 10 tickets at a bargain rate of $100. This fund raising will be decided after the sale of 500 tickets. The Board has indicated that Gary and Gail will assign the donation at the conclusion of the raffle.
