1 July, 2015 Gather, Grow and Go, In the Name of Jesus Christ The Rio Grande de Matagalpa River is in central and eastern Nicaragua. It rises in the central highlands southwest of Matagalpa city and flows alternately northeastward and southeastward, between the highlands of the Darien and Huapi mountains. It then meanders eastward through the lowlands of eastern Nicaragua picking up its major tributary, the Tuma, and empties into the Caribbean Sea at the town of Rio Grande. Although the Matagalpa s total course measures 267 miles (430 km), only the lower stretch is navigable. The Rio Grande de Matagalpa is the second largest river in Nicaragua. This information from Encyclopedia Britannica gives the bare facts, but this all springs to life when someone in one of the small villages on the river needs transportation to receive medical treatment. Because of the generosity of DCC folks, we raised the $10,000 necessary to provide a supply boat and engine that will transport people on the river to medical help and save long journeys on foot. By doing so we undoubtedly will save many lives because of the boat. Eventually someone being transported by The Chas will also be wearing a Jesus cap. This is one of the most blessed mission projects we have shared, and it is good to know we are serving others in the name of Jesus Christ in this special way. God Bless Everyone! 2 Clerk s Notes By Hank Holcomb The Session will not meet in July, so I will save most of my notes for the August Crier. I do have one good piece of information for you. It appears that our issue with getting commercial drivers licenses for our bus drivers has been eliminated, so we can go forward with our Bus Ministry as soon as enough drivers volunteer. There will be an in-house training program and non-driving bus monitor volunteers will be required for each bus trip. A sign-up sheet is in the Fellowship Hall for drivers and monitors or you can call the church office and ask to be added to the list. We won t be starting immediately, but we need to know if the congregation is willing to support this exciting ministry. For all the rest of the news you will have to wait until August. Congratulations Maggie and Joe MacMillan! Joe and Maggie MacMillan recently celebrated their 65 th wedding anniversary! Congratulations on the wonderful example you set for all of us.

3 Cost Includes: Age appropriate Soccer Ball & T-Shirt When you receive this issue, there will still be time to sign up for both the Soccer Camp and Vacation Bible School. The staff and the volunteers put in a lot of work each year to provide the children of the church summer fun and an important learning experience, so please sign up soon. We also need more volunteers to help with this program. If you can give a few hours, even if it is only one day, please contact the church office, , and you will be put in touch with the coordinators. Help us teach your children about God.

4 NEED A RIDE? The Deacons coordinate transportation to medical appointments and DCC church events with an advance notice for members, their spouses and Active church friends. At the present time, the Deacons are available to drive only to local medical appointments in Diamondhead, Gulfport and Biloxi. Call one of the Transportation Coordinators if you are in need of a ride. This change is because VBS is taking place the first week in July. I hope some PrimeTimers have signed up to help with VBS. I know I have. We went to see the Biloxi Shuckers baseball team on Father s Day. Fifteen people attended the game. Everything started out good, the seats were comfortable, the hot dogs were good and we were excited to see the game, but boom then the rain came thundering down. We got rained out before the game ever started. If you attended the game, you need to keep your ticket because it is your rain check for the next game we or just you attend. Our second outing was to the OHR-O KEEFE Museum of Arts on Friday, June 26. We had lunch at the museum and listened to a presentation by C-Spire to explain what happened to our cell phone communications after Katrina and how the issues were overcome. 6 Mission Assignment: Rivers of the World The Mission Committee and Presbyterian Women accepted a challenge from Dr. Ben Mathes of Rivers of the World to make 100 Jesus Caps and raise $10,000 for a boat to transport sick and injured people to medical care in Nicaragua. Well don t anyone get in the way of these two groups because within two months the Jesus Caps were completed and the money raised. Congratulations to both groups! The pictures show Dr. Mathes receiving a check for the new boat and the Jesus Caps at the services on June 28.

7 Did You Know? Some History of Diamondhead Community Church by Bob Benzing Here is some history on the company You may have noticed the Building & Facilities committee has been very busy this spring working on many projects around the church to update the needs of the building and grounds. My recent challenge was to restore the two park benches in the Memorial Garden that needed a complete restoration. Since I love to take on a challenge I knew it would be a fun job. If you have seen the benches in past years, I m sure you noticed the brass name plate was so tarnished that it was unable to be read. After taking every nut and bold, wood and cast iron apart, it was time for me to polish up that brass plate only to find it read, Berkeley Forge and Tool Inc. This peaked my interest and my research was on. I found that the benches were purchased about 1995, and I see no reason why they won t be in the garden another 20 years. Berkeley Forge and Tool Inc. was founded in 1948 and is based in Berkeley, California. It is presently marketing mining and commercial forging products. The company serves customers in Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia, South America, and Asia. Unfortunately, many of their garden bench lines are no longer produced and parts for their benches are not available. I m hoping that perhaps someone in the church can tell us more about the benches or interesting information to add to the history of our church. The inspiration for the creation of the Memorial Garden at our church came through inquiries of the children of Marjorie Rogers Lange. On September 17, 1995, the Session approved the concept of creating a Memorial Garden and and the proposed Garden s location at the northwest corner of the Church property. Use of the Garden is unrestricted. Those persons desiring to have their ashes either buried or scattered in the Garden with their names placed on a plaque on the Memorial Wall can do so. You can purchase Memorial Plaques for $300 in memory of a loved one or yourself, which includes perpetual care. Many pay in advance, and if you decide you would like a plaque or want more information, call the church office. If you decide to be interred elsewhere, you may still have your name placed on the Memorial Wall.
