Brown, KSJ, who contributed the funds through the Brown Foundation to begin recognizing Senior High School Students who submitted Texas History Essays in a contest for College Scholarships. More than 25 Texas towns and cities were represented and (7) seven other states were also represented in the contest. 6 IN AND AROUND TEXAS TEXIAN NAVY DAY CEREMONY IN MATAGORDA By: SRT Texas Navy Committee On Saturday, September 18, 2010, 11:00 AM, The Sons of the Republic of Texas will sponsor a ceremony at Matagorda Cemetery, honoring Secretary of the Navy Samuel Rhoads Fisher and the entire Republic of Texas Navy. After witnessing the capture of the Texas flagship Independence during a running battle with the Mexican ships Vencedor del Alamo and Libertado near the mouth of the Brazos River on April 17, 1837, Secretary Fisher planned the storied Yucatan Expedition, where the Texas Navy raised the Lone Star Flag of the Republic of Texas on Mexican soil. The local citizens of Matagorda are excited about the event that will honor the Republic of Texas Navy and one of their early citizens, Samuel Rhoads Fisher. Several descendants of Secretary Fisher will be present to participate in the ceremony. Representatives from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Texas Navy Association also will participate. With the approach of the 175 th anniversary of Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico, it is appropriate to remember the events that led to the Texas Revolution. Much of the colonists discontent with the centralist Mexican government involved maritime issues, including unreasonable tariffs on shipped goods. In September 1835, the first naval engagement occurred near Velasco, between the Texian privateer ship, the San Felipe, and a Mexican revenue cutter, the Correo Mejicano; the Correo Mejicano was forced to surrender unconditionally. Less than one month later, the first land engagement between Texian colonists and Mexican forces occurred at Gonzales on October 2, The fall of 1835 in Texas was as volatile as the pre-revolution American sentiment in the British colonies only 60 years earlier. Bringing lawn chairs, hats and umbrellas for rain or sun will be good planning. If storming or lightning, the ceremony will be held in the Stanley-Fisher Bed & Breakfast, the historic home of Samuel Rhoads Fisher 107 St. Mary Street, Matagorda, TX Overnight accommodations in Matagorda are limited or already booked, but there should be ample room in nearby Bay City, 15 miles from Matagorda. After the ceremony, the Texas Navy Association is sponsoring a BBQ lunch at Christ Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall located at 206 Cypress Street in Matagorda. The cost of the meal is $7 per person, and lunch reservations are requested for planning purposes. Tickets for the lunch will be pre-sold in Matagorda County. For attendees outside of the Matagorda area, lunch reservations should be made by contacting Admiral William C. Fisher, IV by at: wyebrook@swbell.net. After lunch, Rik and Peggy Stanley, owners of the Stanley-Fisher Bed & Breakfast, have graciously opened their historic home to everyone attending the Texian Navy Day ceremony. The Texas Navy Association will provide soft drinks and coffee during the reception and tour of the Fisher House. For people staying in the area Saturday night, Christ Episcopal Church has planned a colonial Texas church service at 9:00 AM on Sunday. Christ Church is the oldest Episcopal Church in Texas, established in 1838; Samuel Rhoads Fisher was one of its early members. Texian Navy Day is observed on the third Saturday of September. The Honorable Todd Staples, currently the Agriculture Commissioner of Texas and SRT honorary member, authored the legislation designating Texian Navy Day as an official, state recognition day. Enacted by the 79 th Texas legislature in 2005, Texian Navy Day is honored each year on the third Saturday in September. Commissioner Staples drafted the legislation as a Texas State Senator, which office he served at the time. For additional information, contact SRT Texas Navy Committee Chairman David Hanover at (903) or by at: dhanover@suddenlink.net. 6

8 IN AND AROUND TEXAS TEXAS CENTENNIAL HISTORIC MARKER RE-DEDICATION AT SITE OF THE HOME OF ELIZABETH POWELL Texas Centennial Historical Marker. Site of the Home of Elizabeth Powell Keynote speaker Dr. Gregg Dimmick On Saturday, May 1, 2010, the San Jacinto Chapter #1, Houston, hosted a rededication of the Texas Centennial historical marker placed at the site of the home of Elizabeth Powell in Author Gregg Dimmick, a full-time pediatrician and parttime avocational archeologist, was the keynote speaker. Madam Powell s Tavern was the meeting place of the remaining Mexican Army, some 2,500 strong, after the defeat of Santa Anna at San Jacinto on April 21, 1836; the Mexican generals met to decide if they should attack Sam Houston s rag-tag army or withdraw and await instructions from Mexico City. Dr. Dimmick and other members of the Harris County Archeological Association researched the area some years ago, and Dr. Dimmick is believed to be the first person to study and write about this historic meeting of the Mexican generals in his book, Sea of Mud: The Retreat of the Mexican Army after San Jacinto, An Archeological Investigation (2004); their decisions no doubt changed the course of history for both Mexico and Texas. Two years ago, after reading Sea of Mud, Carl Hill contacted Dale Williamson and Tom Green, KSJ to search for the marker. Located on private property near Kendleton, Texas, south of Houston off U.S. Highway 59, the marker had been knocked down years ago, probably by cattle, and the 1936 Centennial bronze star had been removed. Two years later, approximately 84 Texas history enthusiasts met in Jack Wendt s ranch pasture and re-dedicated the restored 1936 marker. Mr. Wendt had poured a concrete slab and up-righted the 74 year old historical marker, and former San Jacinto Chapter President Clay Fisher ordered a new bronze star from the Texas Historical Commission. Tom Green, Dale Williamson and Robert Williamson cleaned the marker, attached the replacement star and arranged for the ceremony to re-dedicate the marker. Fort Bend County Historical Commission Chairman Bert Bleil told the crowd about the activities of their commission, and Charles Sadnick, historian from the Texas Historical Commission in Austin spoke on the history of the hundreds of Texas Centennial historical markers that were placed throughout Texas in After the restored marker was unveiled by SRT President General Sam Clark, KSJ and San Jacinto Chapter President Ron Brown, everyone in attendance was invited to a reception hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wendt. Descendants of Elizabeth Powell, Frank and Vickie Deffes, their son Frank and his wife Alicia from Louisiana, were recognized for attending the ceremony. Thanks to all who attended, and a special thanks to the Wendt family for their generosity and warm Texas hospitality! Welcome from President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ 8 (L-R) Elizabeth Powell descendants Frank Deffes and son, Frank; President General Clark, Chapter President Brown; Dr. Dimmick; Jack Wendt; Bert Bleil

10 IN AND AROUND TEXAS 4 TH GENERATION EAGLE SCOUT The rarity of 4 th Generation and especially Texas 4 Generation Scout families is indeed rare. Among other things, Victor has applied to several scholarship camps, like Texas A&M Eagle Scout Corps Cadets Camp, and is looking at Rice University as well as University of Texas. One family friend, and Victor s Uncle Rob, both Eagles and A&M Grads, are CEOs of International Architecture Firms in Dallas and Houston. At the Eagle Ceremony Tampa Bay Architects/AIA showed-up as a surprise to present Victor a Summer Architecture Camp Scholarship usually given to Juniors and Seniors in Tampa Schools. Also Victor received a unique letter from the President (Obama) and State Reps, USAT/USA Triathlon CEO Skip, who presented Victor a bag of USAT Equipment Victor is the top Youth Triathlete 15 and Under in St Pete/Tampa Region, expected to make Nationals in St Pete late this Summer! Obviously, I m the proud Father, but I think we did this Texas Family Tradition right. The only thing better would have been to do it in Houston or Austin..with SRT as an important part of the ceremony. USAF Pararescue and Aerial Evac also flew an American Flag on a Mission over Afghanistan for Victor on a C-130J, same day he had his Eagle Board, a unique honor for a USAF Military Brat. Thanks SRT for making his event special! Pictured, Victor s Grandfather, from Austin, Texas, Pepper Karstendiek, former Bay Area Council, TX (Brazoria) Executive Board and District Commissioner, and Lake Huron Council President, pinning and presenting the family Kerchief to Victor. Also Present Victor s Dad, Paul Karstendiek, SRT Member Piney woods, and Gulf Ridge Council BSA Executive Board and Tampa Scout district Chairman. Not pictured, Victor s Great Grandfather, Otto Albert Karstendiek, a 1920s West Texas Scout in Marfa, and El-Paso, Texas. 10

11 IN AND AROUND TEXAS ALAMO CHAPTER DINNER MEETING On June 3 rd at the Alamo Chapter dinner meeting, Mark Shelstad, Head of Archives and Special Collections at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) gave a presentation on the SRT's O'Conner Collection housed at their library. Forty members and guests were impressed with the overview and the professionalism of the presentation. Mr. Shelstad wrote to the chapter president commenting on how impressed he was with the depth of history represented at the meeting by the descendants as they recounted their ancestors role in Texas Independence. The event further strengthened the SRT relationship with the UTSA staff that cares for the collection. SCV DIVISION CONVENTION The certificate Jane is holding is the Lucy Pickens Award. It is the highest honor given by the TX DIV SCV to women who make an outstanding and unusual effort to support the Cause. The award is named for Lucy Pickens known as the "Queen of the Confederacy". 14 IN AND AROUND TEXAS ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO REMEMBER THE ALAMO!! On the 10th of July the Alamo Chapter sent three chapter members to the Esparza family reunion in Pleasanton, Texas. Bob Benavides, Historical Events Administrator; Tony Perez, 2nd Vice President; and Richard Esparza, Treasurer represented the chapter well by distributing SRT and Alamo Chapter brochures and talked up the SRT to the approximately 700 attendees. Richard is descended from Gregorio's older brother who petitioned the Republic for the land grant for his brother's service to the Republic at the Alamo. Much of the land around Pleasanton belonged to the Esparza Family and much was donated to churches, cemeteries and for public works in the area. Ten of the attendees expressed interest in joining the SRT and we have followed up with them.
