1 Colonization 1. What was the purpose of Spanish missions in Texas? Spanish missions served two purposes. To convert native peoples to Christianity and to help Spain secure its claim to the land. 2. What was the significance of 1718? In 1718, Spain established the San Antonio de Valero mission, it would become the most important Spanish colony in Texas, and later the city of San Antonio. 3. What was an Empresario? An agent who makes all arrangements to bring settlers to a colony. Examples: Stephen F. Austin, Lorenzo de Zavala, Martin De Leon, Green DeWitt, Erasmo Seguin 4. Why did Anglo settlers come to Texas? Land grants, adventure, economic promise. Anglo settlers came to Texas for a variety of reasons, mainly cheap land. 5. What was Stephen F. Austin s role in bringing people to Texas? What title was he awarded due to his contributions? Stephen F. Austin fulfilled his father s wishes to bring 300 families from the United States into Texas to begin a colony. After his father died Stephen had the grant legally transferred to him. Austin chose a site for his colony and traveled to New Orleans to recruit colonists. These 300 families were known as the Old Three Hundred. He received the title of Father of Texas. 6. What is the significance of the year 1821? Austin established his colony in Texas.
