2 Master s Voice T he Master s Hat This month I am proud to announce that we will be conferring our first Entered Apprentice degree of the year, initiating our first new candidate in almost a year. During this degree, we are taught about the three great lights of Masonry, which are the Holy Bible, square, and compasses, and the three lesser lights of Masonry, which are the Sun, Moon, and Worshipful Master of the Lodge. We are also told that the Worshipful Master may be known by his head being covered with a hat, a cap, or some suitable covering. But does anyone know why the Worshipful Master wears a hat? The hat worn by the Master of the Lodge signifies the authority of his rank and status. The hat alludes to the crown worn by King Solomon. The act of removing a hat by all other members of a lodge is an obligation to show due respect to the Worshipful Master. The privilege that the Worshipful Master has in wearing the hat signifies the respect that his position implies. The position of Worshipful Master is what holds our greatest respect, not the man. For instance, the Worshipful Master may call on another brother to confer a degree or run a meeting in his absence. The person thus appointed by the Master occupies this seat in the East and retains the respect of the brothers within the lodge room as the presiding Master of the lodge. As one of the lesser lights, the Worshipful Masters position is the most honored and sacred chair in the lodge. We are further reminded that "as the Sun rules the day and the Moon governs the night, so should the Worshipful Master, with equal regularity, endeavor to rule and govern the lodge." It is the duty of the Worshipful Master to preserve the solemnity and respect of his position. The Master's head, thus covered, signifies the position of great honor he is in. When it is announced that the brethren may be clothed during the opening of a lodge, a Master's hat is considered a part of his clothing. By retaining a classic or traditional style of hat he reflects the significance that the position inherently implies. The Master s hat thus symbolizes that the man must not be a Master in name only, but that he must manifest the ability and confidence to govern and direct the lodge adequately. I hope this sheds some clarity on the question. Please attend our upcoming Entered Apprentice degree so we may give our new brother his due reception. Sincerely and Fraternally, Brian Hartel, Jr. Brian Hartel Jr, WM Trenton Cyrus Lodge No.5 1

4 From the WM s Desk Iam happy to announce that we had a successful Master Mason degree this past month and would like to congratulate the multitude of people required to make this degree a success. We also had an incredible attendance at our January communication for my first meeting as WM from the East and for our Rusty Mason presentation. My hope is that our attendance will continue to flourish in the coming year. February is looking like a very busy month for us. I am hoping to see many brethren in attendance at the functions that are coming up. Our Super Bowl party, with Chili Cook-Off and Bake-Off, is on February 7th and our Junior Warden has personally challenged Gothic Fraternal Lodge that our lodge can make the best chili. The following week will be our Official Visit of our District Deputy Grand Master Jack Smith, Jr. at our Regular Communication. February 18th will follow with the Official Visit of Most Worshipful Anthony M. Montuori and the Reception for his 2015 Grand Lodge appointments, including our very own RW Walter Stepek, appointed as Grand Chaplain. The Official Visit and Reception will be held at the Crescent Shrine (See ad elsewhere in issue). Two days later, on the 20th, is the Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside. I am hoping our district can match the enormous contribution we were able to produce last year; over 40% of the donations from the entire state. The following weekend is the rescheduled date for Robert Burns Night at Gothic Fraternal Lodge, February 27, and the next weekend, March 5, is our Spring Social at Freddie s Tavern in Ewing. The following weekend, March 12, is the Grand Master s Ball. With so many great events occurring, I am sure there is something coming up that everyone will enjoy. Additionally, the trustees are continuing to prepare quotes for lodge improvements scheduled to occur this summer, such as seal coating the parking lot and fixing some of the damage sections of sidewalk and the steps in the front of the building. Our endeavors to start our online marketing campaign through Café Press look like they are finally coming to fruition and should be up and running within the next month or so. I would also like to announce the theme for our February meeting. Our regular communication is only three days after Valentine s Day, so I am going to request that everyone wear as much red or pink as possible. Sincerely & Fraternally Brian Hartel, Jr. Worshipful Master Trenton Cyrus Lodge No.5 3

Some of them use canes or walkers, their backs are slightly bent. But usually they are wearing a baseball type hat, and on the hats it states either: World War ll or Korea, or Vietnam Vet. So don t hesitate to shake his hand and thank him for the freedom we have due to his sacrifice and of his family. Whether it s joining the military, giving blood, or volunteering in some capacity, we must all be prepared to pitch in and help when it comes to our national security. In times of crisis, our military will certainly do the heavy lifting, but we cannot assume that everything else will be handled by someone else. Vigilance doesn t mean vigilantly sitting in front of your television. It means getting involved, lending your talents and time to the cause of keeping our nation safe. We must be prepared to respond when our country, state, or local community needs us. It may mean some sacrifice, but whatever we do, as ordinary citizens, pales in comparison to the sacrifice so many before us have made to ensure our freedom. Vigilance is indeed the price of freedom, but it s a very small price to pay for so great a nation. So as I stated in the beginning, go up and shake their hands, display the flag on your house, or car. Donate your old clothing and furniture to the veteran s organizations. As a brother of our past stated: Never have so many owed so much to so few! Sincerely and Fraternally Tom Wilson Tom Wilson, Junior Warden 5

8 February Birthday NAME DATE RAISED YRS Bruce W. Small From the West: The Doldrums of Winter As we entered into the doldrums of winter, we certainly were kept busy by the last week of January, getting plenty of exercise with the end of the month's snowstorm. We all experienced more shoveling then we cared to do, accompanied by the achy muscles, sore shoulders and back. We now move into the doldrums of February. While it is the shortest month, it can have a tendency to drag on due to the harshness of the winter weather. What does February hold in store for us? Well, it starts off with that burrowing pesky critter who goes by the name of Punxsutawney Phil. Let's hope he does not see his shadow and the days of spring will arrive sooner. It also includes Ash Wednesday (for those that are observant), Presidents' Day, and, oh yes, that most important day, one of the few days of the year we should not forget, VALENTINE'S DAY. One can easily get on the wrong side of a very, very important person, be it your wife, girlfriend, or mother. Yes, mark it on your calendar, note it in your phone, any place, least you forget. As we move through this month, let us reflect on the resolutions I encouraged you to consider in last month message from the West. Are they still in place, or have they gone by the wayside? If they are no longer a reality, then it suggests they were not that important to you. Maybe you need to reflect on some of our Masonic teachings, think back to the degree lectures, ponder their teachings to strengthen your resolve and rekindle your convictions and resolutions. If your resolution was pertinent to Masonry and of benefit to either your Masonic development or the lodge as a whole, express them to one of the elected line. Take a moment to express your thoughts or concerns to one of us. Remember this is our lodge, our brotherhood. Remember that we only get out of it what we put into it. That is the measure of a great lodge: A lodge that is growing instead of one that's just existing. If you have a novel idea, express it. If it does not fit in the lodge calendar, don't stop there. Seek out brothers with similar interests and pursue it on a social level outside of the lodge. As January closed, we ended the month with the raising of a brother to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. Entering February, we are about to initiate a new candidate on his journey through the degrees, culminating in the same way and manner as all those who have gone before. One of the most important aspects of his journey will be his mentor, his guide, his Masonic brother, who will shape him in very special ways. This Mentor will have a direct bearing on his understanding of our craft, instruct him in the basics of our teachings, direct him in and about the lodge, and give him the understanding to appreciate what Masonry is all about. If within your cable tow, I hope you will consider being a part of this very important process and VOL- UNTEER to be a mentor. Strengthen our candidate and lodge by doing so. If you are interested in mentoring, please contact me by phone. Fraternally, Frank Klapinski SW Frank R. Klapinski 7
